Our new Royal Enfield Hunter 350 cc bike needed a test in hilly roads and Odisha's second highest peak Mahendragiri was in our visiting list for a long time. On the previous day starting from Kolkata we reached Rambha in Odhisha and styed in OTDC Panthanivas beside the Chilika Lake. This orning after enjoying the sunrise at Chilika, we started for Mahendragiri, at a distance of 143 km in Eastern Ghat range. Mahendragiri is not only the second highest peak of Odisha (altitude 1501m / 4925 ft), it is also associated with the story of Mahabharata. Several antient temples are there, believed to be the temples of Yudhisthir, Bheem, Arjun and Kunti, built during their exile. However, the place is completely secluded in the remote tribal and Hilly regions of Andhra - Odisha border and does not have any accommodation facilities nearby. So our plan was to visit Mahendragiri and then through a different route come down to Chandragiri, which is famous for Jeerango Monastery and the Tibetan settlement. We started around 8:30 in the morning from Rambha and first headed towards Berhampur (Brahmapur), along Chennai-Kolkata highway. After Berhampur, we crossed Odisha border to entered Andhra Pradesh and crossed Ichchapuram, the first big town of Andhra in this route. After around 30 km from Ichchapuram we left the highway and turned right towards Mandasa. Mahendragiri Hill top is 40 km more from the highway junction. Soon started the beautiful scenic roads through the remote villages with Eastern Ghat mountains surrounding us. To reach Mahendragiri, we had to cross the Odisha-Andhra border a couple of times. At some point here, the Google Map misguided us and we lost internet connection as well. But thanks to the cooperating villagers, we found our way. Although language is a problem in these interior remote villages. Last 15 km was steep hill climb, of which the first half was completely broken road. If was a good test for our bike. The performance has to be watched in the video and not read here. Then we came to the toll gate of Mahendragiri, where the local tribal community maintains the road and they took a toll (authorized) of Rs 50/- for our bike. The remaining road was just like silk, though with too many hair pin bends and continuous altitude gain. Finally when we reached Mahendragiri at around 1pm, valley clouds started rising. It was unexpectedly cold but the natural beauty of the place was truly worth it. Just beside the motor road, one can find an antient temple named after the first Pandava, Yudhisthir. An uphill trek of 1-2 km leads to the temples of Bheema, Arjuna and Daru Brahma, but that would have taken the whole day and we were not prepared for that. Rather we went one more km down the motor road to reach the 'Kunti Temple'. This temple is still remains in its antient form and awakens some respect. But, inside all these temples you will find Shiva Linga, and not any idol of the Pandavas. Some locals told us that Mahendragiri is a Shaiva Pitha. Anyways we could not find there any 'tourists' from far away places. Next we will be heading towards Chandragiri, around 70 km from here. But that is for the next episode. রম্ভা থেকে মহেন্দ্রগিরির পথের দু'পাশের প্রকৃতির নয়নাভিরাম দৃশ্য তার সঙ্গে ম্যাড়ামের চমৎকার ভাষ্য শুনতে শুনতে মহেন্দ্রগিরির টপে পৌঁছে গেলাম।এক কথায় অসাধারণ।
ভবিষ্যতে যদি কোন দিন সম্ভব হয় তাহলে উড়িষ্যার কলিঙগ ঘাট রোডের একটা ভিডিও দেখার ইচ্ছা রইল। আমি মনে করি আপনাদের কাছ থেকেই kalinga ghat road এর ভিডিও সুন্দর ভাবে পাওয়া সম্ভব। ভালো থাকবেন। ধন্যবাদ।
