  • Brand Manager Kyle Crawford joins the Work Shop to show us how to get the most out of the Ken Onion Elite Sharpener.
The Work Sharp Ken Onion Elite Knife and Tool Sharpener brings the power of a large belt grinder used in knife factories and custom knife shop, into the home or shop of everyday knife users. The Blade Grinding Attachment makes this tool so much more than just a knife sharpener. You can sharpen every type of knife including tanto blades, recurves, hawksbills, large blades and small, but it doesn't stop there. Use the Elite Sharpener to modify blade shapes, repair damaged knives, reshape handles, and more. This is so much more than just a knife sharpener.

Brand Manager Kyle Crawford ought to appear more often in these videos and present his tips and tricks, and especially so on his own special builds. Crawford is all business without any silly drama. I would like to see what knife designs he comes up with using blanks found on store shelves.

I will be getting one of these. I’ve always sharpened on an oilstone for my pocket knives, I noticed when people borrowed my knife at work they always respected how sharp it was. I took a pride in that. But this system is another level entirely. 👍🇬🇧

I learned about Work sharp thru Derrix (not spelled right). I bought a drill doctor and it saved my shop a boatload of money, I highly recommend it. I started with the original sharpener, than I bought the Ken Onion model than I bought the grinder attachment for it. I love all of them. Unless a blade is seriously messed up I can have it slicing paper and shaving hair in 10 minutes or less, usually less. Oh ya, great video guys.

Thanks for making this video, I definitely learned some things. I bought my Ken Onion edition about 18 months ago and was duly impressed with how fast and easy sharpening on it was. I loaned it to a couple of friends to try and they loved it too. After hemming and hawing over the blade grinding attachment, I finally purchased one and I’m glad I did. It really added to the versatility of the system. Thanks for making a great product.

What I did after an hour trying to free hand was that I built a stand for my blade to rest on. I've been sick and meds got me shakey so it was out of necessity . I just bent over some 1" AL corner and some tap screws and BAM I have steady hands all the time. Two screws release my stand when need be. I wonder why they didn't supply something so simple?

That's exactly the video I needed. I have butchered (pun intended) a couple knives lately and this will really help me fix the error in my ways...and the knives. Just last week I did a horrible job on the point of an old custom Camillus Mk2 knife that a previous owner had expertly modified into a spear point, and I felt sick to my stomach when I trashed it while attempting to sharpen it. After watching this, I am optimistic. I just ordered the Blade Grinding Attachment and some belts to upgrade my KO Work Sharp kit. I just learned a ton of much needed knowledge and I am definitely going to watch this again. Can't wait to get started with the new attachment, get some much needed practice and confidence, and fix my Mk2 spear point! Thanks very much!

They are not professionals , they don't even know that a knife has 2 edges , primary and secondary its knives 101 . When you sharpen you knife , you make a v sharp edge , ok , as time goes on that v shape will become duller , because you did not address the bigger secondary V edge , not all knives have it but most kitchen knives do .
If you want to do it like this , im sure you have motor , make a wooden disk , take some abrasive paste and do it that way . you never have to buy or make belts , one tube of abrasive will hold you for who know couple years .
But that is not the best way to do it , because again you address only the tip of the knife , or the primary edge you do not address the secondary edge that is equally as important .
Do you know why Razor is so sharp , because its thin , once you start eating away in to your knife your edge will become fatter and fatter because you did not thin it down when you sharpened the primary edge .

Using the Work Sharp Ken Onion starting with the X65 Belt at low to medimum speed, the knife took shape. After following the instructions of 6 to 10 pulls of the knife I switched to the X22 Belt and again followed the instructions.I then moved on to the X4 and did what the instructions told me to do.
Wow, my filet knife is sharp and usable for the first time. Can't wait to get all my knives in tip top shape.

But after watching your video I’m going to break it out tomorrow and get to know my machine. I have been using mine since this summer and wish this had been out earlier--it would have shortened my learning curve and saved some trial and error. I learned quite a lot from your clear, and concise explanation. Your passion for your craft really comes through.
My one question is that aside from using the stiff belt kit, is there a way to get a flatter grind on my knife than the convex grind inherit in the slack belt system? I am thinking of either some tips or suggestions you might have for the current system, or perhaps some refinements or additional features for a Blade Grinding Attachment v2.0. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

I've never been interested in units like the work pros and other setups that control the angle like that until the blade grinding attachment came out. It's fantastic for reprofiling, grinding bevels and allows me to continue freehand sharpening. I truly believe there is no "better" way to sharpen then freehanded. You develope a deep understanding and intricate knowledge in regards to blade sharpening as you progress.

Wow! Very informative. Thanks so much.
I just purchased the Elite system last week based on watching a video with Steve in it.
And after getting a deeper explanation from you, Kyle, regarding the belts, including the cloth stropping belts, I just purchased them.
I didn’t really consider the Ken Onion original system. It would be nice to be able to do scissors easily and consistently. But that seems pretty extravagant just for that extra.
I’ll have to see how easy the results are for scissors after I get some sea legs with the Elite system first.

I’ve been teetering on the edge of buying one, really didn’t realise it was so versatile. I wish I’d bought this to begin with. I began with a Lansky rod sharpener, then the Spyderco triangular rod one, then the other Lansky deluxe system, each one didn’t fulfil my requirements.☹️. Finally going to get this, can’t wait!😁

What I was doing before I bought this was placing my belt sander in the vice, using my judgement I held the angle and put an edge on. This tool sets the angle and I hold the knife flat, this is more comfortable and the belt change is so much easier.

I have had this Ken Onion edition knife sharpener for 2 to 3 years. I read the instruction manual about forming the bur, setting the angle, etc - but somehow I missed that I am supposed to be sharpening the knife on the top portion of the belt. With the angle set - intuitively - it seems that is was meant to bring the knife directly to the belt from the flat plate. The angles made no sense!. So, I essentially just went to winging it on the top belt at my own angle. I have not yet been able to get a knife razor sharp and was about to give up on this machine. I am very glad that I watched the video. I can go back to my sharpener and use it as intended and see if I can get that razor edge.
As a side note, the work sharp chisel sharpener with the round plates is OUTSTANDING. My chisels are always razor sharp, slicing off end grain with ease. I have mostly been honing my knives on the top of the wheel. I have 2 leather hone attachments for different grits. This works really great on the left side of the knife. The right side is a challenge and I have cut many a sanding disk cutting the left side. Only use it to hone now. Still the knife will ultimately make some kind of cut in the leather and that will catch when right side sharpening. I was thinking modifying with a swift to reverse polarity as this machine was the only one that would get my knives truly sharp. After watching the tutorial I will definitely go back to the knife sharpener and give it another chance.
Does anyone have any recommendations for knife honing polish. I have a green bar that seems to work well. I have read (on the advertisement) that you should start with the white bar first, then the green bar to finish - if you are looking for a shiny edge.
I still love the feeling to passing a tool across a good stone, but the machines are so much fasters.

Like the blade grinding system so much that I ordered 2nd which is currently on its way. My plan is to use one for grinding and one for fine grind along with cloth stropping and polishing belts, this way if I am sharpening more knives the unit gets to rest/cool down while other one is in use.

Sooo, here is an idea: if the key is to hold the blade horizontally, why don't you include a little magnetic bubble level that you can snap onto your knife while sharpening? Just a litte thing, maybe a penny diameter size?
