I have owned my Cooper SE for 1 month and 11 days now. Got it with 16km on the clock. Currently sitting at 4200km. I've driven from Bloemfontein to Cape Town charging Colesberg, Richmond, Beaufort-Wes, Laingsburg, Worcester and then you're in Cape Town. Highway speed driven was 93km/h on clock which is 90km/h GPS speed. Travelling 2200km round trip cost R1600 on the GridCars fast charge network. Less than R1/km even on expensive charging. Home charging on Eskom costs around 30cents per km. Having solar drops that to below 15cents per km. Thus far super duper happy with my SE.

@@shalemasindi138 It just clocked over 13000km this week. I drove 1500km in September and it cost me R160 since I charge mostly from my solar array. It's the best car I've even owned and its a pleasure to drive every day. The range for city is perfect and you will never run out but on road trips you have to plan each stop and ensure charger is working etc.
You really won't be disappointed if you get one.

Hi im from bloem glad to hear someone that drove to CT and found a nice route to charge, mini here in bfn let me keep one for a day and i love it alot, great to know you happy with the car and its more cost effective. they want me to buy the demo one they have but it has 1700km on the clock, so rather going to wait until march next year until they in stock again , for now will work on getting a solor powered system to charge it.

Electric cars in SA are expensive and limiting in their use. And people want wireless charging for their phones because plugging something in is a big mission apparently. And today they announce load shedding. Now if you could run your tv and a lamp off your car then maybe this has a future...

The delta between gas prices and electricity prices in South Africa are favorable for EVs... but man o man is that car expensive there; not to mention the extra tax for owning an EV and no other incentives. Yowzers. In the US, you can get the base trim version of this for $22,400 usd after federal tax credit. Some states offer between $1500 and $5000 additional on EVs, so some state residents could potentially buy this for $17,400 usd. BTW, who says this needs to be a household's primary car. This would make a fine second household daily driver, whereas a second car could be used for road trips. For individuals, so long as they have nightly charging, this vehicle would work fine as a primary vehicle, but for long trips they may need to trade cars with friends/family, or rent a car. With all the money saved... I'm sure it's worth it.

    Hi there Chiro.
I have been looking into the Mini Cooper SE.
The merits works for a work vehicle. If I am where I am based and not helping out, it makes perfect sense. Then my daily drive would be 30km for my work home round trip. Currently, I walk to work as 300m would just make me lazy to say the least. Major fuel savings I know.
With research, I found that if you drive somewhere between driving Miss Daisy and legal top speeds on the free, the range is a lot better. Putting that into South African context, 80km/h to 100km/h. Above a 100km/h the range drops like a child constantly grabbing your cellphone to play games and you having nowhere to charge it. Our temperatures are also in the green zone for the vehicle, not the last few days, where we had heat and a/c would also have an impact on the range.
Okay, speaking of the charging infrastructure. N1 and N2 are capable of handling some of our trips, if you don't mind stopping more regularly. N1 on the other hand, after Laingsburg, the chargers becomes a distance you wouldn't be comfortable with unless you know your car. The N7 on the flip side of the coin, only has a DC charger in Langebaan, so if your dream was to road trip the West Coast, sorry. Not going to work.
Then again as with any other vehicle. The purpose and capability of the vehicle will only become more evident after you had it for a while and got use to it.
For a singleton or a family without small children or that is just small, with mostly small structures, this makes the perfect go to. The price is the factor that is off putting.
Let the EV guru for South Africa come, and do the best way to drive an EV and not just look at the pick up and go.

Sadly, they're moving the production of this vehicle from the UK to China. It's a great little car... but buying anything built in China is an insult to environmental regulation, an insult to fair worker pay and treatment, and an insult to human rights. It also directly leads to wealth transfer upwards. In countries with higher pay, more of the vehicle revenue goes to the workers. When a vehicle is built in a cheaper labor nation, the car still costs the same in the local market, but more of that revenue is taken as profits... and it's those who are already at the top who benefit the most from corporate profits. Well paid labor is a great way for product revenue to redistribute itself back into the overall economy. Corporate profits is a great way to make the rich richer. While I get this type of discussion isn't in car reviewers' wheelhouse, well maybe it should be... because this type of thing matters. We can choose not to support this type of corporate greed.

I agree with what you say, but just about everything that we buy has something in it, that comes from China. I bought a pair of CAT shoes last year. When I inspected it after the stitching came loose, I saw a label "Made In China". Same with Hi Tec, Dutch company, but made in China. Volvo, owned by a Chinese company, KTM, some made in China etc. What to do!

@@blikkiesblignaut6999 True, but there's a difference between "something in it from China", and "the entire car made in China".
I know this is South Africa, but in the US, a lot of people just presume that a huge chunk of parts come from China. It turns out that it's only about 4% of parts. Automotive is one of the last remaining bastions of Western manufacturing, and it's one of the largest global industries. It would be a disaster for higher cost of living nations to concede this industry to China.
Yeah, I'm not so happy about Volvo moving so much production to China. The Polestar 2 went from being an exciting new BEV to a travesty by where they decided to manufacturer it.

A 2.5h load shedding gap in Eskom power does not stop you having a fully charged Smart phone in the morning. Not much different having an EV on charge and still read to use the next morning.
