  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020) was a staunch patron of the arts and an ardent opera lover. "[Learning music] was among the best experiences in my growing-up years," she said in an interview with Opera News.
When she died, in the midst of complete and utter chaos, I felt particularly inspired to write a piece of music. I couldn't find any words to eulogize her, so my medium became music itself.
This piece, "RBG: Sextet for Ruth Bader Ginsburg," can be classified (for you specialists) as post-minimalism/post-romanticism. It's essentially an introduction, a twice repeated middle development, and a final coda - orderly, symmetrical, and just perfect for RBG. It's scored for six players: Alto Saxophone, Vibraphone, Piano, Violin, Cello, and Electric Bass.
The piece begins with a vibraphone and piano hesitantly plucking out notes from the ether, burgeoning the way for the saxophone to enter as the melody. The trio gives way to a theme played by the strings, before shifting to a bout of minimalism, the instruments toying with rhythm and working off one another: the mind of RBG working, thinking, centering.
A climax builds but is cut off by a repeat back to the beginning of the "minimalist" section. When the climax builds for the second repeat, it achieves its goal, blossoming into a full romantic theme. The violin begins a quick 32nd-note cell, which is picked up in turn by the other instruments, the fireworks of the supreme court justices playing in different keys and timbres.
A mini-climax is sustained before the instruments peter out altogether. The violin and piano repeat the theme played by the strings from the beginning of the piece, bring RBG's memory home to rest.
This is my gift to the memory of RBG - for inspiring, leading, and caring for the people of this country and of all existence.
Note: This recording is of the playback instruments in MuseScore3, not real players. Due to the current situation, this is the best that could be done within the confines of life. Please bear with it!
