    Showing my age here but I saw this at the cinema back in a1979. I watched The Eureka Blu ray last week and it’s still a great movie.. David Warner for me made the film. His over the top performance was brilliant.

      David Warner is always great. I think the film gets better as it goes along, it really finds its feet in the second half.
      That being said I really preferred the second film.

    Love this movie!! Just bought the eureka double pack myself.
    Been trying to get this since i seen it on betamax way back when(no joke) had a large budget and i think its just as relevant now, the whole man getting punished by nature for exploiting the resources slant. Interesting how yoy never really know if the medicine man manifested the bats or its just a natural migration. Love ambiguous storytelling.
    I had actually given up on owning this one never mind on a eureka bluray! Keep up the good work Graham, good to see and hear a fellow Glaswegian(?) Review movies kn youtube. Thanks for the great review and exposing this great film to your community. Thank god for eureka.

      I'm about a 25 min drive from Glasgow.
      I thought this double pack was great, but i preferred the second film more. It was more to my tastes. Supernatural road trip and all that.

    Arthur Hiller was one of the great journeyman directors, who could work in any genre. THE HOSPITAL, SILVER STREAK, THE IN-LAWS, TEACHERS, OUTRAGEOUS FORTUNE, THE LONELY GUY, LOVE STORY (!)...and NIGHTWING.

      @@manvfilm They're mostly comedies, but THE HOSPITAL is a dark comedy, and SILVER STREAK is a mystery/comedy/thriller hybrid. And LOVE STORY is a melodrama. Off topic, have you ever seen Albert Brooks MODERN ROMANCE? There's an Indicator release of it. It's very funny, though of course, humor is subjective.

    Didn't know they made a movie of Nightwing. I read the book a few years ago while sitting in the county jail, LOL!!! Reminded me of Bats with Lou Diamond Phillips. Shadow of the Hawk kicks ass though!!! Love that movie.

    Well, films are usually not very good when they are all fun, exciting and engaging without proper character and situational setups. It is these setups that get us involved enough in the story to actually care when things start getting crazy.

    I plan to rent this asap. Like the commenter below, I saw this in 1979 at the cinema on a double bill (not sure of the other title). Seem to remember liking it and it will be interesting to view it again all these years later.

    • @manvfilm
      @manvfilm  Před 3 lety +1

      He’s not actually Van helsing, it’s just how he feels in the story. A born vampire Hunter. I actually preferred the second feature more. I’d say it’s worth a good £10 punt.

    never really excites? whatever you're smoking I DON'T want some of! hahaha! this movie has always excited me, perhaps because I was kinda young when I saw it, too young I reckon. The setting and ominous vibe, the music.... they create SUCH an atmosphere... at least they did to young me, that when I see it now that I'm older, I'm taken to those same affecting feelings (the same thing happens to me with the Indiana jones Temple of Doom movie, and the movie called CONGO.)

    I don’t have a problem with Jaws rip off movies as long as they put an original spin on the idea. You. Can’t have another shark movie because it would be dumb. But mix up the formula a bit and make them bats. Fine with me.

      I generally find myself loving animal attack movies in general.

    • @jamiebraswell5520
      @jamiebraswell5520 Před 2 lety

      I think Nightwing was a good stand alone effort and really doesn't quite deserve to be lumped in as a Jaws ripoff. I mean, the native American plot added some nice mystical twists that I enjoyed and despite what the review guy said, it does suggest at a certain level a supernatural influence in both the attack of the bats and their destruction.
      Piranha is another nature strikes back type of Jaws ripoff, but another example of succeeding in its own originality with a clever witty script and effective sequences. Even Steven Spielberg stepped in to defend the film as a good effort when Universal wanted to sue them.
