Brilliant film, criminally underrated
Totally great script insights on certain facets of human nature and the actor's performances were brilliant!!!!!!
Bob De Niro is amazing in this. I forgot that I was watching him. He played the character so well. He wanted to be validated and seen so badly that I felt it.
Huge respect for DeNiro to be so enthusiastic and insistent about doing this role, and fairly early in his career.
Try to tell kids who thought ‘Joker’ was some kind of breakout, new kind of film, about this…

It definitely says a lot about culture, madness and the vapid, hollow, pitiful, cult of celebrity.
In that sense things have (unbelievably) only gotten worse. (See: 2022 Academy Awards)

This film was decades ahead of ‘Joker’ and it tells the story far more eloquently!

I thought it was an homage to Taxi Driver, but after just watching TKoC, wow, it really does owe everything to Scorcese, lol.

I saw this movie after I seen Joker and was amazed. King of comedy is a great movie, so is Joker but you can definitely see the inspirations used to fuel that film. I’ve heard Taxi Driver comparisons which I can totally see but after watching the King of Comedy it seemed much more of an inspiration instead of Taxi Driver (in my opinion) The dark lonely feeling definitely was Taxi Driver esque
So underrated. I watched this movie a dozen times. Absolutely brilliant performances as well as written and directed. A true classic movie!!!!
This reminds me of the man who waited so long he forgot what he was waiting for. Great movie.
It's year 2022 and still relevant. Classic movie. People in the 80s didn't appreciate it then, what a shame.
It felt like a movie that shouldn't have come out in 1982 along with E.T. and Poltergeist. This belonged in 1978.

Watched this for the first time tonight. It was absolutely brilliant.
Late to the party but glad I got here eventually.
God I'd love to experience it like that again. As much as I love the movie and watch it at least twice a year, it's that first time that I wish I could experience again. And even moreso with Goodfellas. Coming out of the theatre after a Scorsese movie makes me feel like I'm in a dream sequence or something.

My first girlfriend was a huge Sandra Bernhard fan and she showed this film to me. I was blown away by it. Decades later I’m glad this film is taking its place as one of Scorsese’s best.
This is my favourite film. De Niro plays me. I've never forgiven him, but my day will also come.

I loved this little doc. What a masterpiece of a film! I can watch it over & over again & still see new, fresh details in it. And Sandra Bernhard was really funny & honest, especially about the gentrification of the city.

This film obviously had a huge influence on Joker.
It’s like watching Taxi Driver, The Fan and Joker all in one. Just watched it yesterday after some comments people were making in regards to who Jerry Lewis was in real life on a different thread.
The Fan is terrible. No where near as good as the old Scorcese/De Niro films.
This movie is a masterpiece along with Taxi Driver like this behind the scenes video.

Interesting that Robert de Niro agreed to be in that rip off as you call it. I'd say it was hugely inspired by the King of Comedy. Anyway, Joker got so much backlash from the sensitive crowds that are trying to control media these days. They were paranoid that a copy cat would try to emulate Joker and commit acts of violence. If they tried to make this movie today, those same people would call for it to be cancelled because the protagonist psychotically kidnapped someone and held him hostage. Protagonists these days have to be squeaky clean role models that are representative of today's laundry list of demographics that are pandered to by corporations and Hollywood.

My friends at the time really hated the movie, but within a year and several viewings they came to adore it.
It's funny how that can sometimes happen. I hated, and I mean I REALLY Hated Fargo the first time I saw it. Mainly because the accents drove me up the wall. But I watched it a second time and it went into my top 20 favorite movies.
Same with my friends but once they came around we were all relieved I could finally untie them and let them go back to their families.
4:29,I lived in NYC for a few years and was outside watching them film that scene,all the people outside standing are actually just people but anybody walking by is an actor, they just stand there and when the scene starts they start walking.

Sandra Burnhart put up the BEST acting I have ever seen in this movie, and I am an officianado. It is a crime that they didn’t make a sequel, this time centering in her. She’s a phenomenal, one-of-a-kind actor.
Her character being released from prison?
Masha's character was brilliantly acted; a sense of real craziness...off the wall and completely nuts.Sandra Bernhart is a brilliant actress/performer.
When i first saw this movie, I thought the straight face of Jerry Lewis the whole movie was comedy.

this was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see after watching the movie... interestingly, I just read in IMDB's trivia section "Jerry Lewis suggested that his character be killed by Rupert at the end of the film, but Martin Scorsese rejected his idea." Being at the climax of the film, I wonder if Joker would've still murdered Deniro had Deniro murdered Jerry Lewis or whether Joker would've been forced to do something else for fear of similarity

This film showed Scorsese's range as a director. When you think about Martin Scorsese movies, the 1st thing to come to your mind is the mafia, and blood shootin' out everywhere gratuitously. So when I watched this for the first time like,...ten years ago, I went in EXPECTING to see some1 get whacked and lots of blood Lol

My mom and I both loved this back in 1985 or so on HBO...she thought Sandra Bernard was great in this...I loved that Jerry Lewis played a serious role.

Did Mr de Niro mean to drop the revolver into the gutter just before he bundles Jerry into the Merc...was this a genuine mistake or planned...? For me this is so funny and typical of that character...the scene is made by the pistol fumble!!!!!
Also wondering about the butler having trouble opening the door, then Jerry saying "Open the fu**ing door. It takes you 8 minutes to open the door?" Sounds more like Jerry Lewis than his character.

Predicted the rise of the twitch thot
I broke down and watched this movie, after purposely avoiding it for decades, for the lone reason that anything with DeNiro could not possibly be terrible. It took me probably 15 minutes to begin to get into it but I ended up just loving it. Naturally DeNiro was fabulous as the passive-aggressive lunatic but Bernhard was the ideal 3rd character. An equally pathetic wannabe with boundless energy. Bottom line, a great film in my opinion, with Jerry Lewis playing the "straight man".
