Making A Desk For My Fiancé
Vložit
- čas přidán 18. 02. 2021
- In this video I'm working on a DIY custom desk project for my fiancé Ria, which will act as both a "work" desk and a dressing table all in one. Since recently becoming a permanent homeworker, Ria needed a nice desk to work from. She had quite a specific idea about what she wanted, and how it would look - and wanted to incorporate some solid wood to make it less "officey" and give it more of a homely "furniture" feel, so I used some solid beech for the frame and drawer fronts, and made the rest from Medite SMARTPLY's moisture resistant MDF. There were a few challenges along the way!

Good job Keith. Pretty sleek looking design. I like it. Nice having Medite on board bud. Sweet.
Cheers Stew
Nice. Thought I was watching Peter Millard for a moment there! Good to see you getting some more quality support for your channel too. Keep 'em coming!
That is a really good desk and dressing table construction. Well done, indeed.
Really clever design, beautifully executed--and Dylan gives it his seal of approval, too!
For the past few years I've watched you do all sorts. You now seem to be A BIT OF A PRO at this
Yay! New video means finally Friday again!
Its really beautiful. Very modern and stylish. Adds a different swag altogether. Keep it up bro.
Nice work.. thanks for letting us watch how you did her desk.
Defo one of your better project, the skills have gone up a few notch, thanks for sharing!
Well done Keith!!!
Really smart design and build!! Excellent project. A credit to look at I’m sure
Thanks
Beautifully finished project, and extremely practical for Ria's requirements...the holders on the end of the cabinet are a nice touch, great job Keith!!!! Cheers from Aus!!!!
absolutely LOVE Dylan :) oh yes, the desk too :-))))
looks great!!
Great build. I really enjoyed watching that. Thanks
Looks fantastic
you should make a *cat tunnel* for dylen, a tunnel with lots of interesting stuff so he can play in it (or maybe he's too old for that now ;)
You have become my woodworking hero !!!
8:04 lol i just had that same problem and ran the drawer through the table saw.
Nice desk! The epoxy&sawdust trick worked out great!
Soft close runners aren't much more than those cheap runners
I like the cheap ones
Lovely job. I really like the beach finger joints that you seen rounded over. Look excellent.
That looks awesome.
Came out great Keith!
Very impressive 🤩. Well done Kieth 👍
Top job there Keith very nice desk 👌
Good job man. I like that you feel comfortable using traditional joinery as well as pocket holes and things like that. - THANKS
Very nice job Keith 👍. I almost made that mistake with the drawer when building a workshop drawer unit recently, but I just got away with it 😅.
Fantastic looking Desk! The Cat couldn't wait to get on it🐱😃
Love it. Great work.🙂🙂🙂🌟🌟🌟💙💙
Nothing says romance like a solid woodworking project! (Why do I know?... our first date involved her waiting for me while I finished a woodworking project in the student workshop at college. It must have been a powerful experience... still married after 50 years)
Another great project Keith. Great that the desk provides multiple uses for Ria. Brownie points in the bank 👍
Well done !!!
Keith mate thats absolutely brilliant, Ria must be chuffed to bits with that. I can also see that you upped your table saw game. Brilliant workmanship as well. Nice to Dylan make an appearance.
Very nice! It looked like a comfortable workspace for the future Mrs Brown. Congratulations by the way.
Great work 👍🏼
nice job. looks great
The design and the colour match perfectly with the room and i love the knobs they look like a jewelry . Awesome job !!!!! I think Dylan was expecting something for him another bed to match with the desk !!!!!! Cool job again !!!!!!
Great video. We come for the Dylan we stay for the wood working.
Good looking desk, Keith. I like the design and I enjoyed the problem solving on the narrow drawer. Thanks for sharing this with us. Stay safe.
Thank you
Nice project, I love beech and the finger joinery is a nice element. I didn't think we could get dado blades over here? I was thinking you could swap out those bottom drawer runners for some heavier duty full extension runners as I think they'd be better quality (and last longer). Nice kitty btw.
Nicely done.
That’s a fabulous desk.
Great project. I think there are a lot of your viewers who are looking to do similar projects with the trend towards working from home. I know I myself am and plan on pinching a few of your ideas. Keep up the good work
Thank you!
I enjoy watching your videos but now you have every tool under the sun I can’t relate as much. Like that domino tool
Looks good with those drawer fronts. Looks like that deep drawer will be a nightmare of disorganization. Maybe some cleats inside to support a pullout organizer could help.
It's what she wanted 🤷♂️🤣
Cool stuff. The cat seems very pleased with his new desk :-)
Nice desk/dressing table😍😍🇺🇸
The beech looks so nice once finished. Where do you get this timber from - and don't say you found it lying around Norwich somewhere!
Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's jigsaw doesn't like going around corners!
I got a lot of slabs from a warehouse, they'd been in there for 20 years+ and they're all twisted and warped but on the plus side, well seasoned!
Great work pal 👍🏻
Nice build mate, custom built to a tee! I'm interested to see the mdf vid, I seen Karl Pope did one recently which was helpful. Mdf is something I'm never really sure about, especially with the dust, or even the best way to finish.
The desk is great. The quality of your work and design has really progressed from the early days.
Thanks
I remember 'old R'n'B Brown' in his shed at the bottom-of-the-garden and I wonder what he'd make of this project...? I think he'd say, 'well, you've got that ruddy-great workshop so thrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp!' Nice one Keith.
Cracking job once again. Will be doing something similar soon. Not sure whether that promo shot is going to positively impact Medite's sales figures though 😂
Great job Keith, your partner and the cat seemed to like it and says it all, Stay Safe Mate !!!.
Great to hear a bit of Television in the background, musical taste too!
Love Television!
Good job Keith.
Thanks Michael
Looks great, craftsmanship first class.
Btw, to remove clou in the inside corners, I use a reed which you can bend, like in the hospital, it will form perfect in the corner and the glue goes inside. Maybe an Idea? cheers!
OMG, I want a desk exactly like that.
your cat is full of fun - fine work - the table fits like a glove - greetings from federl (austria) 🤘😎👍💚🍺🖖
Thanks
Awesome work. Just wondered what thicknesser this is :) keep the great vids coming
Elektra Beckum HC260
@@RagnBoneBrown thank you kindly. Looking forward to next project ;)
Great job. And good inspiration for a far more basic desk I'm starting this weekend. But you hid those rear screws behind the glued on back panel so perhaps not such easy dismantling!
*glued and pinned back panel
Whoops!
Hi Keith, I think I'd have avoided using a fan for drying, as it's likely to circulate workshop dust.
That's one thing I love about your videos you show that mistake happen keep them coming the vids il keep watching
Great video. Cool to see your video production quality increase as well. Tom Scott will be pleased with the "#AD"
Loved his latest video!
nice desk mate
Thanks for another really good video, Keith. Please keep them coming cos they really help. BTW, what is the saw blade in your machine at 1.52 please?
There's a link to the finger joint video in the description box and I talk about it in that one 👍
Nice job Keith...
Top notch video as per norm.
This is lovely!!! Where did you buy your epoxy???
Found your channel, waw beautifull work, watching from Belgium 😀
Nice desk! But it deserves some full extension ball bearing drawer slides
super gorgeous desk! I love the solid wood components mixed with the painted mdf.
Thank you
That turned out great and i think Dylan approves
This desk is looking very smart and the knobs are very fancy. They suits the desk very well. Good to see that another piece of yours got Dylan approved. The day you make something he doesn't climb on to you know you've failed 😸
Ilove ur cool n sense of humore ! Iloveyou 😘👏🏻😊🤗😂❤️❤️❤️❤️
Congratulations on the engagement man, coming up on my second anniversary myself.
great project! I notice you have a cen-tec sytems hose. I just got one a couple weeks ago. How do you like yours?
Love them!
Great desk Kieth.Well thought out and planned. Will we see a picture of Ria hard at work using the desk. You have a good stock of materials these days.
That's included towards the end of the video
Lovely work! What is the cutting disc you use in your rotary tool? I have a die grinder which I use spinning with miniature wire wheels for cleaning up metalwork, it's great but the miniature cutting discs you use looks so handy too!
It's just a regular cutting disc I got in a set of rotary tool bits
Keith. good job. ive always wondered about the wood rack inside the shutter door. is that enough protection from the elements. and temperatures for the wood stability moisture etc. How does that work. I'm a novice of coarse. great video channel 👍👍
It works great, doesn't get any moisture unless I leave the door open when it rains, and fairly good airflow so timber dries out pretty well
Really enjoyed watching this project. Thank you. And some advice, please! I note you have a track saw AND a table saw. I have a track saw and I’m contemplating buying a table saw. Would you see the table-saw as an essential for a home workshop or just a “nice to have”?
I love my table saw because it's quick, convenient and accurate, I couldn't be without it. But I know some people say you can do everything and more with a track saw. I like having both!
That's a cracking looking desk mate , looks really good. What brand router bits are you using these days . Hope the boss likes the desk / dressing table make sure if Ria now has to work from home full time then you claim the correct costs off her employer compensate for use of power broadband ect ect
I have a mixture of all sorts, most of them are just cheap ones
@@RagnBoneBrown the round over left a good finish
That was REALLY nice.
I may have missed it but once you slid the drawer in, did you replace any of the wood which you cut from it? I’m imagining paper/makeup slipping over the back edge.
Really nice job 👍🏾
No I left it as it was 👍
Very nice indeed.
Currently I have a rather awful built-in desk in my home office. I 'm desperate to get rid of it and wanted something much lighter in design. This has really caught my eye. I hope beech isn' t too expensive but I notice that Peter Miller of "The 10 minute workshop" also waxes lyrical about Medite. It seems it really is the dog's cajunos. 🐕😁
Great vid Keith, but like you said you have normally used the normal cheapy type BandQ type mdf. I guess as that is easy to go get and can be cut in store to aid for transport. Mr Millard also rates the posh stuff,, but my question is?? How can a hobby woodworker get this stuff and from where easily?? Thanks
Most good timber merchants should be able to order it in. That said, I can't seem to get Medite locally to me in Norwich, they all stock different brands of premium MDF. I could order Medite from a national supplier (like Latham's) though but delivery costs are expensive so I understand the issue! Medite are working on improving things and putting together a list of suppliers though 👍 I'd recommend calling around a few local timber merchants to you and asking what brand they stock, or try asking Medite via the members are link in the description box
Very smart looking unit, and the problem solving was effective. One query though on the use of 'our' tablesaw: I see you have the optional addition attached to the main fence. I thought that this was really only needed when cutting thinner materials, so I rarely fit it. Do you have some other reason for attaching it that I have not realised that you could pass on please?
I was sick of putting it on and taking it off all the time so I decided to move my measurement ruler on the fence to account for the dimensions with it added and just keep it on there all the time. Only problem is occasionally I want a higher fence!
Fantastic video, can I ask as you said you've worked with the cheap MDF before did the 2 coats of primer go on so well on the edge because it's a superior MDF or was it your primer? I've only worked with the cheaper MDF and I normally end up putting filler on and sanding to seal it. Looked so quick and easy on your video. lol
I follow the same process for all MDF, never had any issues with it, although the Medite stuff does cover a little better
Usually I sand at 80, then 120, two coats of primer, denib and then top coat. Maybe the video makes it look like less work than it actually is 😊
Dylan! 😍 With the back panel glued on how are you to reach the screws holding the table top down if you need to break it down again? 🤔
A good point!! 🤣
Lovely job. I live in Norfolk as you do I believe. Is there a stockist for Medite in Norwich, looks good, I’d like to try it. Thanks for the video.
Not that I can find, unfortunately. They all seem to stock different brands of premium MDF. You can order it nationally via suppliers like Latham's I believe. Medite are working on putting a list together for regional suppliers so may be worth checking with them via the members area (link in description box)
@@RagnBoneBrown thanks for your time. Cheers Allan
Making A Desk For My Fiancé and Dylan the cat...Greart video again man
I think it is amazing and one of a kind! 🥰 and you may make mistakes but you work out the problem that is fantastic because you don’t give up!
Haven’t used a jigsaw for about 18 years I really should get one
P.S forget it was winter in England it’s almost the end of summer! I wish I had someone like you here in Australia I would get you to help design a special bed for my daughter (Adult) because we can’t find what we want here 🙁
Lovely job and great video, thanks. I think you said you used polyurethane glue on the painted parts. Can you please let me know what type - manufacturer and spec? TIA.
Check out the my tools link in the description box, consumables👍
@@RagnBoneBrown Thanks!

🤣
I bet Ria is well pleased with that Keith...nice one
