    The box art for Feudum immediately made me think of Cones of Dunshire, then the description of playing it only amplified the feeling, then a quick google leading to a reddit discussion about the comparison and the initial rules explanation video confirmed this.

    Heavy game week, yayyyy.
    Glad you kept Barrage, Kanban EV and Feudum. All favs of mine.
    Barrage is mean, I don't think there is any way around it but the expansion helps for those who want to stay out of the mud. I love Feudum but when we play it we do so a few times in a row, over a given amount of time. First time back is a bit of a slog but it's worth it for the second game and beyond. I'm not sure if I'd want to keep it to play once every few years but I'm not a collector either.
    Another week of awesome content, great job! Love the rambling!

    Some interesting discussions again this week! I completely agree about the Journeyman expansion for Isle of Skye. It changes the style of the game and detracts from the reason people love it. I found the Druids expansion to be a much better fit for the game.
    With regard to Barrage, I can completely understand Sunniva's perspective. The person who taught me the game did not go easy on us in the first play. He built his dam just in front of mine, completely destroying my point and money opportunities that round. However, it is a game that shines more when you all understand what can be done. Once you can anticipate opportunities and threats, you're in a better position to either protect what you have or take advantage of opportunities. I enjoy the expansion (Leeghwater) for this one too. It adds a few more worker placement options, which seem to make the board competition less important.

    • @BoardGamingRamblings
      @BoardGamingRamblings  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh yeah, absolutely! So many games are like that, that when you get into it and see more of what can be done, the «randomness» and bad luck makes up less of the game. We played with Leeghwater now, I really liked it! Thank you for watching, and glad you enjoyed it! :D

    @Mepper. Před 3 lety +2

    From this set I have Codenames: Duet. For Feudum it seems that you have to play it quite a bit to like it because it is so complex. If you only play it once or twice or have too long a stretch between plays then you probably won't like it just because of the large effort to learn and re-learn the game.

    There is a special place in board game heaven for your appreciation of Feudum :-)
    I think it is a work of love, and unlike Gaia Project, which is so mainstream you can easily get again everywhere, I doubt that Feudum and its expansions are easily recoverable.
    Maybe it's one of the games that is like a small scruffy stray dog. It may not be the most fancy or favorite breed, but if it makes you happy and you adore it, just continue to give it a nice home. The couple of extra cubic centimeters of shelf space it requires is nothing compared to to the feeling you get, when you kicked it out because you did not have the time to play with it, but once you notice that you do miss that little fur ball after all, it's nowhere to be found...
    ... and of course it might then even rain heavily by that time...
    ... and it would be really cold and dark out there...
    ...and, anybody who now wants to suggest that this would just be an irrational personification of a dead object that is common to advanced stages of board game obsession, simply has no heart.
    No heart at all! :-)

    Nice discussion about interaction. It's interesting because on the one hand it's true that the amount of blocking in Barrage is very high, but when I think of the kinds of interactive games that really excite me the type of interaction tends to be more interesting than just taking something before someone else can, which feels like the majority of interaction you get in Barrage. If that's the kind of interaction you like though then I can see why it's great. Probably all of the people comparing it to Brass got my expectations too high. I also think that once you know the game reasonably well the blocking becomes more deliberate. I do really dislike games where the interaction feels accidental.
    As far as Feudum goes, I love the way the guilds interact with the push/pull circular economy. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like that. But it frustrated me how unfocused the game felt, most of the board stuff felt pretty generic, I wish there was just enough there to facilitate the guild system and the guilds were the clear focus of the game. As is I don't think I need a copy of Feudum. But I'm one of those people who doesn't want more than 100 games. If I wanted 400 I think there would be room for Feudum, so I get it.
    And yeah, Kanban is a masterpiece. Maybe Vital's best.

Only having the first stronghold edition (because space and price), I would really like to try the new edition to see what changed and to check those new modules. But kanban is the most close to perfection I feel in any board game.
    Isle of Skye is also a really interesting game but, contrary to you, I prefer to play it with the expansion. I have never play just base game, but I feel I woul think it is too simple (and this is weird because I actually also like a lot of simple straightforward games)

    I share a lot of Sunnivas sentiment on Barrage and Feudum.
    Barrage is, to this day, the only game I've ever said "I don't ever want to play this again". I had such a terrible first play of it that I just don't want to go back. The game is so tight, scarce and punishing that I just don't get the hype around it. I get learning curves on games, specially on strategic heavy games; that said, I never had one bad experience playing all Lacerda titles, or Mindclash games, or Pfister games. It felt like Barrage gives you choices and then trips you up when you make the bad ones, and then getting back up is a struggle and you won't make it by the end of the game. True, I agree with the argument that I need to learn the game, play it a few times within a short amount of time, but I just don't see myself picking this game to suffer through it over playing something like Terra Mystica or Brass, or even Maracaibo or Lisboa.
    The thing that gets me is that on paper it should be a game that I really enjoy. So we got the expansion on a good price, got a nice insert and I'm going to give it a try again in the near future. Let's see how that goes.
    Feudum we just couldn't bring ourselves up to playing it. I read the rulebook on multiple ocasions with the intention of trying it out and I found it so convoluted that I feel it crushes under its own weight. For the effort to prepare for it and then the hours to play it I feel I can get 3 or 4 games played, ones I know I really enjoy. Ultimatelly, we decided on parting with it.

    • @BoardGamingRamblings
      @BoardGamingRamblings  Před 3 lety

      Life is too short to play games you don’t like! I agree on giving a game a couple of chances, but even games you thought might be a new favorite might end up being something you do not like! I enjoy the way Barrage is punishing, but I also understand that very many may hate it! Luckily, there are so many amazing games out there that we’ll all have infinite good games to play 🥳

    • @shinjial
      @shinjial Před 3 lety +1

      @@BoardGamingRamblingsYes! I usually give games a few plays before making a decision to cull them, and when my mind is mostly made up I do a last one - usually with a bit of research (I see videos of people discussing it, a few minutes of gameplay) if I can spare the time.
      I really love board games, and it bums me out when something doesn't click for me, so I tend to give it a few goes. Like I said, to this day this is the only one that got this response out of me. And even that might change!

    Being mean in Barrage is very small issue. Bigger issue is that, this game is very, very, very boring and it's long.
    Additional thing, people have tendency to overthink in each turn, which make game even more boring and longer.
    The whole design of components is horrible (e.g. colors of board or transformers mepels, what the heck !).
