  • The Second World War saw some very interesting and strange inventions, perhaps none more strange than the Rotabuggy. This flying car was essentially a Jeep with a rotor and tail attachment and yes, it actually did fly! So why weren't more produced? In today's video we look at the story of the Rotabuggy, the flying car of WWII.
At Premier History we want to take you on a journey through time and grow your knowledge to see what it was actually like to be in some of the pivotal points in World History.

Not exactly an easy machine to fly that’s for sure

The only one Dave! Though I believe it’s a reproduction as the original was taken apart

Maybe I wasn't paying attention. Was this thing supposed to take off with its own power, or always brought close to the landing site by a bomber?
Either way, it's not really a Jeep anymore. More like a Yeet :)

Yes Gerard, towed close to the landing zone then released similar to a glider however the theory was it would have more control to accurately land in a small area, this ultimately wasn’t the case though

You'd think they would have recorded a video of it flying....

Before I watch the rest of this: I predict that the Rotabuggy was unfeasible because the crew had to be specially trained to fly it. We already had gliders flown by trained pilots. Despite their shortcomings, air-dropped Jeeps were more effective in the long run.
Conclusion: I'm gonna be generous and say I was about 75% right.

Close enough I would say, 75% is definitely a pass!

It wasn't a helicopter it was an autogiro with no propeller. It would have to be towed to a destination like a glider.

I’m a big jeep fan and never heard of a flying jeep. But it was still very cool and wonder what was causing the vibration and if there any way of correct it. OlllllllO

So reliable the old Jeeps! Not too sure but possibly just the fact it was a car and not a plane!
