- This video is about the most particular vehicle of the 2019 Concorso d'Eleganza of Villa d'Este in Italy. It's called Gyro-X and it's a 2-wheeled prototype able to stay and drive perfectly balanced thanks to a gyroscope (55 cm in diameter) fitted in the front.
The project was born in 1967, designed by Alex Tremulis and gyroscope specialist Tom Summers, with a budget of $750,000 (about $6 million today) but it was soon abandoned due to Gyrocar Company's bankrupt, ran out of funds to perfect the product.
After all these years, Gyro-X chassis had a complicated history, losing its gyroscope too, until it ended up in the hands of Lane Motor Museum in Nashville.

As James May would put it, it is an ingenious solution for a problem that should never have existed in the first place.
Yeah, like missing toothache
James may at a hardware store would be an interesting feature
I think Jay Leno said it best " Answering the engineering question no one ever asked." He was referring to an early 1900s bike with the engine mounted on the front wheel. I think this is in that same category.

Flying cars are useless...
The gyro is only used during low speed because at high speed the car can balance itself like a motorcycle. It is indeed a good concept to look into.
Also, during high speed.. The two rotating wheels serves as gyroscope
The car cannot balance itself at high speed. What happens If the vehicle takes a gentle bend at high speed?

I freaking found it! Years ago I was driving back from Camp Hill PA and saw this on the highway. It was towing a trailer too that matched the styled car. I took a Pic of it on my Verizon flip phone and it came out perfect! It looked like a UFO on wheels if I had to describe it. I assume it was coming back from one of the Carlisle car shows they have down there all time.

@@michaelfinlay1412 you don't understand. This probably drives... Weird. But. Motorcycle riding is fun. Except in the rain. So. This then.
Plus:slimmer than a 4 wheel vehicle could be without being necessarily unsafe in curves. A leaning vehicle doesn't experience the same forces as a car. A car this slim and small would not be safe at higher speeds in curves. Not saying this is but the concept allows for it. Though it would be nice if someone developed a 3 or 4 wheel thing that just has suspension arms like a motorcycle but slims or broadens it's track so you can park superslim go off road medium and be broad n flat on the road few cm above ground for fast cornering.

This is pretty much just a novelty, but at the same time a really impressive marvel of engineering and it looks stunning and surreal when driving past. Almost like it's floating.

Invented by a Russian count and first demonstrated in London in 1914.
Not really. It's kind of pointless: once you get up to speed the gyros are completely unnecessary. You can just balance it like a motorcycle... Hell, just have the out-riggers pull up at 10 km/h instead of right after you start it up.

There must exist a parallel universe where this kind of independent mobility is not only allowed but also desired.
Incredible engineering work, especially for being a 1967 model. Very amazing!
Ask not "why", rather ask "why not?".
I think in this particular case it might be more constructive to ask why...
Engineering, Technology and Science advance mostly by so-called "failures" that often provide lessons and experience that will prove invaluable on the next project. Regardless of commercial success. Sometimes (not always) it's a suprisingly thin line between visionary genius and obsessive crackpot.

This car seems so much more advanced than many newer cars. Wow that is awesome.
This use 99% of the engine to keep balanced, and 1% to move
It needs a Hayabusa motor in it :)
The gyro can balance the car without power for a full hour, so theyre fine in terms of power use.
theyre choosing not to drive it fast due to being a prototype model and expensive, a full production wouldve been driven faster and likely been more powerful
it feels like it is a horrible ride, I wouldn´t want this car not even if they give it to me for free
@@starcader2663 you leaning wouldnt do anything to change it, thats part of the point of the gyro
Also look at the tires, those rubber bands will loose grip at the first curve, motorcycle tires have a different shape for a reason.
A half century before this vehicle hit the road, a locomotive that balanced itself on a single rail amazed the world, only to be forgotten by subsequent generations. Still impressive. I wouldn’t mind seeing someone incorporate this tech into a mockup of Luke Skywalker’s land speeder or the Jetson’s flying car.
Brennan's monorail
Each loco car would need the same gyro setup. Would get quite expensive.
Gives new meaning to "take it for a spin around the block"
How??? Because you crash from mildly unsettling maneuvers due to them not using the correct tires?😂
"We choose to create a balanced gyroscope car in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organise and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too."
beautiful words, yet pointless. first gyro car was built in 1914. gyro is not a space-age tecnological device. it is pretty simple actually. and gyro car is useless.
Looks like a Studebaker Avanti that was picked before it was ripe.

I do remember reading about this in popular science magazine back in the day. It was way ahead of its time.a lot of technology in cars that were really cool was back in the 60s early 70s and poof disappeared. 😁🇺🇸
it was not ahead of it`s time. gyro is a fairly simple device. first gyro car built in 1914.
Could not be made to work. The effect of the gyroscope is the same at whatever speed while the counter-steering from a single-track vehicle increases with speed. Those long streamlined Bonneville bikes are notorious for their steering characteristics to REVERSE at a certain speed, and in at least one case I know of reversed again at still higher speed. Pretty obvious that the designer had zero understanding how a motorcycle steers and stays upright.
This looks like something I would draw in kindergarten

after being a science fanatic at school in the '70s and then a car mechanic in the early 80s a similar idea occurred to me back then but instead of being a self-balancing motorcycle, mine was a single axle pod arrangement. never got to built a proper prototype (only built a model out of Meccano) but some 20 years later I was heartened that the design would work with the release of the original Segway, albeit my concept would have used a small 2-stroke engine
