Can Ex-Stig Beat Liana Lap ON A SIM?!

  • Welcome back to my ‘Ben Collins Gaming’ channel - the place where I’ll be documenting my journey into a weird and wonderful corner of the motorsport world that’s undeniably exploding in popularity right now - sim racing.
    My previous experiences of driving through games are, quite frankly, pretty bleak. I dabbled with some very primitive examples of car games in the 80s and 90s, but even though they were rudimentary, some of the core skills they taught me really did help me as I started out in my racing career.
    Nowadays, of course, it’s a completely different story, with the line between reality and the virtual world getting smaller all the time.
    I headed over to ‪@SimDemon‬ in Tiverton, where they kindly let me loose on one of their range-topping ProSimu setups, complete with direct drive and multi-axis movements to make it feel incredible realistic.
    What better car and track to give this rig the ultimate shakedown on than a Suzuki Liana at Dunsfold Aerodrome?!
    I’m heading back to my roots and I’m bringing you along for the ride. In this video, I attempt to beat my best real-life lap time of 1-44.4…
    Huge thanks to SimDemon for hosting me at their incredible facility for the day: simdemon.com/

    Whilst it's not a replacement for actually tearing up a track. Sim racing really does open up a lot of opportunities to get yourself on track in something you lusted after as a kid with your nose pressed on the glasss window of the local toyshop dreaming of owning, in my case a dinky toys lotus 51, now I can have a bash at vintage spa in it.
    Not everyone can put down consistent times whilst gassing to camera and being entertaining for all of us watching, but you put in a 1: 42.9 whilst doing all that. Love the new content you're putting out here, as it gives everyone an insight into sim racing from an actual racing drivers perspective, and whilst there is still that disconnect between how it feels in real life and in the comfort of a sim rig, its good to see that it's not that big of a disconnect now with all the new fangled gadgets.

    • @michael1
      @michael1 Před 28 dny +1

      Yeah, especially in VR. Not the least most of the ways you can get on track will be a let down for people who think they're going to go along and be let loose on a track in a fast car driving it at the limit - things like track days or the 'experiences' are usually anything but that.

      @BenCollinsGaming  Před 29 dny +4

      Really?

    • @LargeStyle
      @LargeStyle Před 29 dny +4

      @@BenCollinsGaming Yes really!
      VR doesn't necessarily guarantee being faster on a single lap basis and for some it might result in slightly slower times (often initially around -0.5 sec) while adjusting to the "reality" of the experience, but when you overcome that (which for you will likely be instantly) then you'll either be as fast if not faster than using regular displays as VR provides a strong & real visual sense of presence & spacial awareness of everything, motion is much more prominent & natural to feel & therefore easier to read, lines become more intuitive & smoother, and with the very significant improvement in sense of speed (as the visuals cover a lot more of your vision & it's in 3D) you'll be 100% consistent and not going wildly deep / missing apexes.
      Regular 2D monitors / TV's are ok and some people prefer them due the ease of use or just not getting on with wearing a headset and / or possible motion sensitivities / intolerances, but if you can stomach VR then it's a major game changer. Aside from when crashing, I've felt absolutely fine in VR and was able to jump in a F1 car and push hard immediately.
      For us typical simracers it's just an awesome way to feel like you're in a real car doing silly things, but for you it'd make the transition from real life to simracing practically seamless! VR transcends the sensory experience to a whole new level, which a monitor / TV could simply never offer. The best thing though - it's just (arguably) so much more fun 😁

    • @Peginafication
      @Peginafication Před 29 dny

      @@BenCollinsGamingabsolutely second this! Was looking for this kind of comment on VR or would have posted one. VR is next level, please do try it and let us know what you think. Just don't push through if you feel ill at first; take a break when you do. Slowly work up to not feeling sick (otherwise your brain may associate VR with feeling sick semi permanently and you ruin it for yourself).
      Your brain wigs out with VR at first (around corners mainly) because it's fully expecting g forces but they never come. Feels very weird at first and, really, it's a testament to how immersive VR is.

    • @michael1
      @michael1 Před 28 dny

      @@BenCollinsGaming Yes. Caveats - when you put a screen near your face it needs to be much higher resolution. i.e our normal understanding of what is a good resolution for games (1080p or 1440p etc) no longer applies. You need a really high resolution and current VR headsets need a really powerful GPU to run the games at that resolution
      Even at the highest resolutions of the best VR headsets the picture is not as sharp and detailed as a 4k or 1080p monitor you're looking at from a distance. So you're going to lose some visual fidelity - and specifically when you want to look into the distance down the track that's where it's worse.
      But you've played older games on older computer hardware. Just think like when we played doom at 320x240 we got immersed in it and then graphics cards got faster and better we got higher and higher resolutions. Well VR is a basically like that. A step back in resolution terms (it's not literally as bad as going back to 320x240, but that's the gist)
      That said the current crop of VR headsets are much improved from the early Rift and Rift S.
      Secondly if you feel nauseous from motion control you're likely to feel nausea from VR. Your brain thinking you're moving fast around a track when you're not triggers sea sickness in many people. You have to acclimatise to it. My first 10 minutes driving laps I was lying on the bed groaning for an hour or 2 afterwards feeling sick and thinking I'd wasted my money. After a time though of doing short stints. Stopping and removing the headset if I started to feel ill, I end up now I can drift and drive for hours in VR without issues.
      VR legs they call it.
      I'd say the favorite VR headset among sim racers is the HP reverb - in term of price / performance. A lot of people have the Quest 2 or 3, and Valve's headset is great but it's pricey along with anything else high end like that.
      Wearing them it's sweaty and a lot of sim racers say they don't like wearing it but you've done hundreds of laps wearing a helmet and it's no worse than that - it can't be less comfortable than a real racing car either with layers of clothing and gloves + helmet.
      Another consideration for your channel is, the driving / chatting to the camera thing. VR might get in the way of doing that. But it's definitely worth experiencing. For me it was game changing. It was what made driving in a sim feel like driving. It's obviously still lacking that feeling when you're going too fast or the forces from heavy breaking or push back in your seat from acceleration (not in a Liani) but it's very immersive and you can finally know where the car is and react to it on or over the limit much better ime.
      You don't get the seat of the pants from forces but visually you do, you can react to the car going out of shape much faster and judge distances for braking etc much better - although I bet you can do it on a screen too, i.e sim racers who put in hundreds or thousands of hours looking at 1 or 3 screens probably get used to it, but if you've done thousands of hours already in real 3d in a car, you'd probably find stepping inside the game will instantly feel better.

    • @ChristopherWoods
      @ChristopherWoods Před 13 dny +1

      Once I went VR I've never raced flatscreen since. You'll need a much more powerful machine to render high resolution headsets at 90 or 100 Hz, but the difference is remarkable. I race Assetto Corsa, AC Competizione and iRacing in VR on an HP Reverb G2 and it's such a fun experience, even when I come last!
      The monitor you were using in this video is also going to have caused you some cognitive issues because it had a significant input lag. On a display with minimum input lag you should see the virtual wheel rotate at exactly the same time as the physical wheel, as it does on my machine in VR or 2D. You will have been losing time having to drive reactively instead of being able to process and react to what's happening on screen realtime.
      Quality vid 👌😊 that motion rig looks like a lot of fun. Getting the DD wheel forces dialled in correctly also makes a huge difference to FFB feel. With Content Manager and CSP in Assetto Corsa the game can look and feel stunning.

    But, its a wonderful thing, to teach my 7 year old girls, the basics in race driving. For me, im always over 2 seconds slower, than in real life.

    I still keep my PS3 around for the sole purpose of the Top Gear UnFamous laps. Visitors to my house have the chance to do a lap on the TG track using a Citroen C3 which is the closest I could find in the game to the Liana. Their best time goes up on the leaderboard, and so far there's 60-odd names. There's even an F1 Driver's list - not that there's been any F1 drivers, but anyone who has a sim rig and can beat the fastest non-simmer goes onto the F1 board. It's really interesting to see how everyone approaches the job of setting fastest laps...safe to say I can predict what'll happen based on how similar people have gone about the drive :-)

    Hey Ben, awesome channel idea, subscribed right away :) ...One quick observation: Check your monitor/tv input lag. Seems like there is pretty big delay between your real wheel movement compared to wheel in the game, which makes the driving more challenging than it needs to be. There definitely are TVs / Monitors that will be faster than this. Also HDMI vs DisplayPort can make a difference, also the panel grey-to-grey response time, and also the input lag of the signal itself, and the screen refresh rate as well.

    hi ben, I've been reading some of the comments and agree with most of them, here's a concept for you how about you putting some laps down and us as sim racers try and beat your lap time i am sure like me we have always either played the role as THE STIG or have thought we could beat THE STIG in a race. i noted you were using assetto corsa as a platform if you were to try this concept using assetto would be a good platform as iracing needs a monthly subscription i have been told, and may put it out of reach for some racers where assetto is more flexible and easer to add cars and tracks, i have some 180 tracks and around 450 cars in my collection. Great to see you joining the sim world, hopefully you may use some Australian muscle cars in one of your video's, cheers Ron from Perth Western Australia

    I always thought it was strange that there was a sudden influx of laps that beat yours. Maybe more modern pads and tyres plus with the stated extra tarmac. No shame at all in coming behind that list of drivers though, but it would be interesting if you can do the real thing again.

    Driven many many sims over the years .. GTR ,GTR2 , GT Legends , Race On , Assetto sims , Project Cars 1 , Iracing and more. As well I have driven simcades like Gran Turismo and Forza motors sports , FH4 and 5 as well as Need for speed games and more. SO, saying that I can say with out a doubt that having any sim NOT setup to ones liking is just killing the experience and times. Its takes time to adapt to each setup and get it so it feels right. All of you saying he is using paddle shift or its not a standing start should consider that fact . So the 1:42:9 is from some one who is driving a sim with out properly setting up to his preference . No sim rig has the one setup fits all so he should get it setup to feel right to him. Times to adjust on top of that and the fact the sim he is using IMHO doesn't seem to have perfect tire grip physics as he says just adds more handicaps . All of that taken in to consideration means that the 1:42:9 is not aided by using paddle shifts or running laps. Real life driving is never going to be duplicated in a sim rig 100 percent. Considering his history and proven master skills i d say those times would come down alot faster if on the real track in the real car :) . Plus I get the cursing Ben , I have evented a few new ones when I mess a perfect hot lap up to lol.

    Hey stig. Could you maybe do a video about car setup in Sims? Like tyre pressures what's best and also brakes balance. Just to explain how I would go about setting them up. Possible showing the difference of each? Huge fan!

    Also, the thing that really impresses me with real racers is their memory and attention to detail - being able to remember the rear brake effect in the real car vs the sim.

    I should recommend you put your E-Stop on the inside of your rig rather than the outside. If you need to push it you will get close to the wheel base. put it on the inside and you can kick it with your leg to use the killswitch. My E- Stop is on the inside so if need to be, hands free to push the e-stop. Never needed to use it but better to be safe than sorry
