God the timing on your educational video is perfect... Yesterday NW Montana trying to cross the river, lost my footing, was slept away in the current. Below me, roughly 50-yards was a sweeper entanglement root log jam... I knew it was a death sentence, 67-years old, good sharp, swam like a scared SOB to the other side, made it exhausted. My wader belt was not tight enough, wader's full, went head-under several times, no vest... Was glad to see the sky again. Rudder boots, I did have a support stick, water was 8" above my knees... Lost my fly rode, go pro, camera, cell phone, didn't care, so scared to death... Bless You, X 2... Love your channel, hands-on for the everyday, real guy outdoorsmen...
Yikes!! Glad u made it! I’ve been swept up a couple times steelhead fly fishing...;/
Rip fly rod and go pro
What river were you on? I had a similar "this is how I die" situation on the Rock Creek River two weeks ago and lost my fly setup and my shotgun the third time I went under. Glad you made it out alive man, you have another story to tell now!
@@Ccccc5558 Bull River My Friend... Thank You...
@@Ccccc5558 Dude Rock Creek got me too! Took my rod tried to swallow me whole 25 years ago. Super slick rocks in there boy
20yrs ago I was standing in the middle of the Muskegon river and the dam a mile and a half up river opened 2 of the spillway gates due to rain that morning.( I was far enough downstream that I didn't hear the sirens) I ended up ditching my waders and finally found the bank a quarter mile downstream. I thought I was a goner. Luckily it was June and the water wasn't freezing cold. I lost my waders but I hung onto my $350 rod and reel setup and I walked out alive. Be safe out there, not everyone makes it outta these situations alive.
I commonly cross a pretty swift river, your video was on point. The wading stick is a game changer when you start using one. Always make sure you're foot or stick is firmly planted before moving the other. Slow and steady wins that race. Thank you for spreading this information. Everyone stay safe out there, and catch some big ones!
Man never had my belt tight, thanks so much for the info
Mustang 3184 auto inflatable if I plan on crossing, Ice cold rivers with back pack fishing rods doesn't take much to put yourself in a sketchy situation fast. Being a scuba diver gives me a new appreciation for the power of water.
Life jacket is a must for me.
Thanks for the tips really helps thank you so much
@@shaunlehman9158 Being prepared never hurts. My PFD inflates when I go under and I bob up like an apple. I've had two buddies die in 15 years when their waders filled up on them and they couldn't recover. One of those was just duck hunting and slipped in the pond.
@@shaunlehman9158 exactly you have enough gear to worry about a stick really wtf . Just dont go alone have somone that can help you if needed
@@yelekaw when I'm wading I dont wear waders I just wear shoes and shorts I've never fell or had anything happen to me in 4 years of wading
@@barbecueddeer395 You fish winter steelhead in shorts and sneakers eh? Not for me. It's not a matter of if you go under, its when. And all a buddy is going to be able to do is tell the search team where he last saw you. No thanks.
Shawn should be fishing. That is a great summer and winter steelhead run.
As someone who had to recently cross a river in flood at 3 am in below freezing conditions in a survival situation, these are phenomenal tips. Thank you for sharing sir
Great video. One important note about the stick is you have to have hands free to carry one. I’ve seen guys hauling a lifetime supply of tackle and rods across the river with no free hands available. Pack light!!
I almost learned my lesson the hard way crossing the SF of the Boise river. Thank you so much for posting a video like this. Grew up in Idaho but just recently have been venturing into the outdoors quite a bit and realized Mother Nature is nothing to take lightly.
I just started watching you last year, im not sure if you did it or not but you should make a video of how to maintain/oil up your reels and line? That would be great to see from you guys!
Ha ha Jordan said third leg
I am glad that you posted this video. I have used this method for a few rivers. You can never be too cautious. Rivers can be really dangerous.
Had a crash course on the cascade river last sunday. Almost got swept glad i had a big branch with me.
Studded felt soles for my Korkers were a game changer for me. They just don't slip
Just like most people that have had close calls, we all need to be reminded of the dangers and how to do it safely, thanks Jordan
Very informative thank you Jordan
Fell in last year. Never waded since. Educate, entertain, inspire. I’ll get back in it tomorrow and teach jig for chinook.
Glad I watched this. I've been doing wrong my whole life. What you said makes a lot of sense. Thank you.
You are awesome 👍, thank you for your all information you provide, cheers.
This is a great video gentlemen, and will undoubtedly help save someone's life. When I was new to wading, I literally did the opposite of everything you said here and I nearly drowned on the Wilson. Like Jordan said, every situation is different, but these are some crucial tips that everyone should know.
Fantastic video! Nothing like going out to CZcams for a safety refresher on wading only to find that one of your favorite fishing channels just posted one!
Two points I'd add: Beginners should start with hip waders, because if you do fall in they're easy to unsnap and kick off, like you were swimming. Also, if ever you do get overwhelmed, no gear, no matter how expensive, is worth your life. Let it go and worry about getting to safety!
Y'all should do a video series on how to scout for new fishing spots. Folks who are new to fishing or an area could use some tips on how to find great spots to fish! Keep up all the great videos!
Yeah buddy! Think about water depth changing unexpectedly, also. I was fishing an island a few years ago and water looked like it started rising but it was hard to tell. Went back to cross where I had a couple hours previous and the water was easily a foot higher and rippin! About lost it a few times, but had no other place to cross, that was real sketchy. I think the dam started letting water out for an upcoming rain storm. Lesson learned!
I really appreciate this video. Its pretty much the way I roll when crossing but I know my belt needs to be tighter and I should carry a pfd. Gotta make saftey a priority. Its easy to get complacent doing the things we do so much.
Always have a good stick!!!
Pretty much nailed that tutorial.
Your videos are so so good 👍🤘
Yep! This is a perfect video for everyone. Thank you soo much. Perhaps someday a video discussing the pros and cons of the options for wading boots. I know I have questions. Good job, Jordan, as usual. Keep 'em coming!
Outstanding instructional video. Thanks for making this one!
Thanks for another awesome video!
So dope! I used this as training material for our monthly staff meeting at the srcd.
Thanks a lot for this guys I crossed some not so nice water the other day actually and was wondering what I could do to make it a safer and easier trek across. You guys rock
one year me n my brother crossed the carbon river, smfh.. forced to use my pole as a stick, distroyed the rod, but got the 18 pack of beer across safe n sound..👌🏽👍🏼 np..
I love you guys!
Amazing video again Jordan, tutorial king!
Almost died crossing the Clackamas... water went up about 2 feet over night. Water was almost chest high and very fast current. Friend went in and had to swim for shore.
I've been wading rivers for several years, it's great to have a refresher course every now & then to remind us all to be more safer with some of the careless actions we tend to take.
Just recieved my saltwater gerber needle nose, on my hip rt now going down the river! These are bad ass!
Excellent tips
Definitely think before crossing... drowned my phone trying to save time crossing in an unfamiliar spot. Water was much higher than I thought.
I have learned... If you do fall fall forward. The current usually will just push you right back up on your feet.
love that wading staff!!
Wading staffs are a somewhat common item I see in flyshops around the PNW and west in general.
The concept is always having at least 2 points of contact on the riverbed.
Thanks for the video Jordan 👍
Great info. I always always have my wading staff with me, attached to my belt. I take it out when I first step into the water. Besides it being attach with a rope I put a magnet on the belt and the staff so when I’m fishing the staff is always attached to me sword style.
great video!
Thanks for the safety video I seem to see lack of it on CZcams channels especially when you could have to younger viewers
thanks bro.
I feel like this is a personal attack on my stupidness for almost drowning in Montana two weeks ago and losing my fly setup and shotgun
My Dad always told me to never lift your feet as you cross the river, always slide your feet along the top of the rocks and when you place your foot down, find a crack between the rocks and then you have a good plant. That way the current doesn't take your foot down river either when crossing in stronger current.
Great lesson. I think u meant perpendicular, not parallel.
It's mainly common sense lol... but great info Jordan... keep up the great info guys
Thumbs up!!!
Clark
Great video and advice that could save your life. My rule is if it looks dangerous, it probably is and no fish is worth your life.
Great video champ. Whats connected to ya gopro ?? Juice pack ??
On the rivers I fish, I would be swimming if I used this method exactly as demonstrated. It's probably my age lol. The way you fully commit to each step; I've done that and it has cost me. I have to reach with each step and find a solid spot before fully committing the step. I think my rivers have just the wrong sized rocks, plus, my age, plus poor hearing= poor balance. I'm still thankful for what I do have. GREAT video though, honestly.
Metal studs on your soles are well worth the money. Makes a nice day of wading in the rivers.
I've gone down TWICE and both times the PFD was a hindrance. It kept me floating in thigh deep water and i couldn't grab the bottom. 🤣 I was laughing floating down the river, wiggling over to the edge.
This is gospel
If you’re with someone, let them know what you expect of them if you do get swept away so that they don’t panic either!
Hey I ordered a bunch of merch from the summer job and only received like half of it what do I do?
I just send my brother across first. If he cant make it then i probably cant either haha
🥰🥰🥰🥰
Spikes man. I can not stand felt. Nothing sticks to rock and ice better than spikes
It's dangerous to cross a river no matter what you do !
