  • In this video Grumpy Monkey Garage begins the restoration process on a 2002 Buick LeSabre. In this video we discuss the history of the car, if it is worth saving, and some of the noticeable issues with it. Even though we are able to replace the battery, will this be enough to get this vehicle that has been sitting for 3 years to get up and go?

I purchased a 2005 Buick Le Sabre Custom from Copart in Oregon last June and through research discovered it had been driven 500 miles in eight years. The radiator was corroded, a new battery was needed (like yours), and the ABS control module had to be replaced. Only 73,000 miles and in mint condition except for a nonfunctioning tachometer (it's stepper motor time!). The tires were in great shape but were twelve years old, so I got new ones. I have always liked the redesigned 2000 to 2005 Le Sabres (and the 1997 to 2005 Park Avenues) and don't care what other drivers think. You will get zero respect on the road with these cars, and, again, I don't care how others feel about my 30-mpg-highway 3800 magnificent automobile.
Update. The Le Sabre started overheating two months ago. My mechanic said to change the radiator cap. That did not solve it. Then he said check the level in the overflow tank. After shutting off the engine, the coolant would "boil" in the tank. Lately, he said that both heads have cracks in them. Oh, well. . .

Its funny to casually pass someone and they see it's a buick and they speed up to retake the lead😂

I am damn near finished restoring my 2005 LeSabre Custom myself. And yes, it was owned by a senior citizen female in her 80s ( I believe) who died a few years ago. Despite having only 72K miles, it had multiple scratches and dents everywhere except the hood and roof. I did a FULL body repair and base coat/ clear coat paint job on it, in the original maroon metallic ( GM calls it Garnet metallic). Bought new American racing wheels ( polished alum.) and gave it new tires. Gave it new ( ebay) headlights, new cabin air filter, charged the AC and used POR15 on the under body rust. Best riding car I ever owned! She now just needs a new headliner and she'll look almost new!

I'm currently driving the same car, same situation. Grandma's old car, she only used it to go to church and the store, was left to sit for some years after she died. I end up needing a car quick, so I figure I'll fix that up and use it for like a year until I see something on the used market that I like. What few cars I do see that interest me are all 180k+ miles, meanwhile I still haven't hit 80k in this car so I stick with for a year. Then another year. And then the entire used market goes to shit. So yeah, I'm four years in on a car that I originally only wanted to use for a year, tops.
The most annoying thing about restoring it was that I had to repair the wiring twice. One week after its fixed and I start using the thing, it stalls out after going up a hill. Get it back home, open the hood and discover that something else decided to have a go at some of the wiring that I'd just had fixed.

I have a 2002 Buick Lesebre with only 50,000 miles. Not a cool looking car, but I love it.

Got a 72k mile 2001 Lesabre recently. Typical old person car with some scrapes on the bumper but otherwise in excellent shape. Purrs like a kitten and rides like a cloud. Great second car for me and the wife.

I've owned 4 Buick LeSabres and 1 Park Ave. One had over 350,000 miles on it when the transmission gave out. The last one I had was a 2002. It had 115,000 and I gave it to our grand daughter when she got her license. That was in June. She totaled it in October. Worst decision I ever made!

Same here in the Midwest. There's a 2005 LeSabre with 158K miles for sale for $5,995. Heck, there's an '01 LeSabre with 235K miles and no headliner and they still want $3,995! Just saw an '05 Ford Focus for sale with 200K miles for $3,995! Can't believe it...
