Thanks for the answer for my 24/32 magic in iZotope question! I haven’t mentioned that I open files in iZotope to copy a single mono track from the multi-track file I get from my SD Mix-Pre. I used to use SD’s Wave Agent app for splitting tracks, but I find iZotope’s workflow more convenient. That’s why I have to create a new file, not just use the one that I recorded. Unfortunately Save dialog for a new file is exactly the same as Export one.

Hi Vadim, ah, ok, that makes more sense. Yes, RX seems a little clunky when it comes to splitting up poly wave files. Might be worth contacting Izotope support. Best wishes!

-Sound Reinforcement Handbook was my intro to public address systems way waaaay back in the day. Whew! Saying it's hardcore is an understatement. But it taught me a lot about the why's and how's of mic placement.
-I'm a little unhappy with Izotope's upgrade strategy. Simply going from 6 to 7 advanced is much costlier than some crossgrade options, when they offer sales. Maybe they'll offer a decent sale on that in a year or so once the "new" wears off. Some of my other upgrades and crossgrades (especially regarding bundles) were unnecessarily complex as well. Still, excellent software.
-HAHA! Oh that Cary. [long pause] "I'm not answering that."
I like these sessions. Thank you!

Thanks Ike! Yes, the upgrade pricing is a little odd in some cases. And that handbook is a great reference for so many things.

Regarding the question about hearing loss at 51:03. There was a tool called eqMac that I used for a few years, and I'm sure there are others, especially for Windows. It was basically a system-wide software equalizer that would let you tune what came out of your computer's audio output. I used it to sweeten up the sound of an external speaker that had an issue with sounding a bit muffled around 5kHz. It worked well, made that little speaker sound way more expensive than it was. So there is absolutely a way to adjust your sound output to adapt to minor hearing insensitivity, as long as it isn't total hearing loss at those frequencies. Of course the tricky part would be attempting to calibrate what the person with hearing issues is _perceiving_ with the EQ enabled with what an average person might be hearing with the EQ disabled. I think you could generate a tone at different frequencies with the EQ off and ask the control subject when they become able to hear that tone as you raise the volume, then enable the EQ and boost that frequency so that the other person can hear the same tone at the same volume. Jump to the next frequency, lather, rinse, repeat. It can be done. Looks like the newer version eqMac2 has a 31-band equalizer. It's even free & open source software. Google "eqmac2 for windows" for alternatives.

Thanks. May also have to take into account the room and it's characteristics (e.g., adjust based on nodes, standing waves, etc.) if you'll be listening on near field monitors.

About hearing loss: This is another example that the US is way behind in health policy. In my country you can go to your regular doctor and get him to send you to an audiologist which is then free.

Stereo microphone for concert? I have one you might want to try: the SuperLux S502. It's a -$150 knock off of a +$3000 Schoeps microphone, and the difference is minescule. It's one of those rare cases where you get like 95% of the quality at 5% of the price.

Re: time code slates. In my experience, I've never seen a camera department that has a time code slate. At best, they may have a standard slate. Sound department is typically considered responsible for all gear facilitating sync. However, this is customarily billed for as a separate optional item, i.e., it is not part of many mixer's base rate or base equipment package. Some mixers do throw time code kit into their base rate or baseline gear rental. But, in my opinion, it should be a separate billable item. Timecode gear is expensive, and frequently mishandled or broken, because it is handed off to camera department during the shooting day. Many 2nd ACs don't exercise the any degree of care for other department's gear as they do their own. Lastly, time code is a time-saving workflow for post that saves editorial time and therefore, money. Consequently, it has significant value to production, and accordingly, is completely reasonable service to charge for.

      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  Před 5 lety

Thanks Scott. Precisely why I always show up with a slate. I had a union mixer insist that it was the camera department's responsibility, and that may be the case on union jobs, but I always bring my own slate and 9 times out of 10, it is the only slate on set/location. And for the really budget jobs, I have to insist that we use it.

Hey hoodaffairstv, I usually only use headphones to check small portions and in those cases I use either Beyerdynamic DT880s or if I'm feeling particularly decadent, I'll pull out the Sennheiser HD820s. But I do most of my editing with near field monitors (Focal Solo 6Be).

A lot of people seem to be complaining that all sorts of Adobe apps are getting more and more unstable and showing no improvement at all in performance while competitors leap ahead in speed and features. Premiere is being abandoned in droves for Davinci Resolve because it's way faster and more stable. You mentioned Affinity Photo replacing Photoshop for you. Audition definitely has several very good alternatives, with Reaper being one I would recommend looking at. Lots of people are tired of the subscription model with no apparent benefits versus purchased applications. If Adobe aren't careful they're going to crash as a company pretty soon.

I’ll add that I use Logic Pro X and while not perfect, for my voice over work it is fast and easy for me, especially. in conjunction with RX6. Best thing is you aren’t renting the software. It has both a non-destructive track editor and a destructive file editor for the single track and the normal multi-track window as well. A little different approach than Audition but you mentioned that specifically Curtis and wanted you to know it does have it.

Yes, I agree. I have seriously considered moving to Resolve, but on the Mac, it does not use the OS's color management so I need a proper grading monitor to make it my "comprehensive" solution. I might do that or I might use Logic to fill out Final Cut Pro... Would love to hear anyone else's insights on this.

Thank you very much for your guidance. I have a question about mixpre series. If, besides connecting mixpre3 with Sony a7iii through the stereo jack, I connect them via micro hdmi port, will it synchronize them to start and stop recordings? If yes, shall any micro to micro hdmi cable do the job, or I need some special one? Thanks once again.

Hi nkd adb, The A7III is not on Sound Devices compatible camera list for the MixPre, though that does not mean it will not work. I recommend contacting them via this page: www.sounddevices.com/supported-cameras
If it does work, a standard micro to micro HDMI cable will work. Best wishes!
