  • Topics discussed: Werner Herzog’s latest memoir, Every Man for Himself and God Against All; writing text in your native tongue; “The nets were set the night before”; mattresses stuffed with fern; when the first time you ate an egg was a feast; having no tolerance for the culture of complaint; the value of food as something to be honored; determining how you live but not telling others how to live; taking self responsibility for getting your own food; grabbing trout out of the creek with your bare hands; the people who seem miserable but are happy and dignified in Herzog’s film Happy People; how Timothy Treadwell was undoubtedly a very good outdoorsman; the Disney-ization of nature; how the story behind Grizzly Man stumbled into Werner; the need to protect the privacy of death; surviving a plane crash from 15,000 feet and then knowing how to get by in the jungle; how the birds scream in agony; loving all of your films; when you use a phone for the first time at the age of 17; the afterlife; acting in The Mandalorian and playing a character on The Simpsons; and more.

Herzog did this for a reason. I’ve never not heard of him not being deliberate. So cool. Such a great filmmaker, storyteller, and artist. He’s on that Kubrick, lynch, Scorsese level of cinematic artist.

Please take this advice for I never heeded it myself never spend a day doing something. You do not love . when the time comes and you were old and fragile. Nothing will be more important than the decision to spend as much time in your life doing something you love.

God. What a contrast. I was born in California in 1943. My brother and I would whine for soda or candy to my German great-aunt who was fostering us. She memorably said "What do you want me to do? Cut it out of my leg?"
While it did shut us up, the aura of possibility still lingered. Could she?
    How fortunate we were.

Enlightening interview. Steve and Werner have starkly different world views.
Every assumption Steve made towards Werner's intentions and perceptions were based on cold logic and harsh reality. Werner shot him down every time. Steve, you were talking to an artist long in tooth, not the mirror. This was a good opportunity to be inquisitive and receptive.
An invigorating episode, chock full of misunderstandings on part of the interviewer. An excellent look into the meateating media-minded mogul that we all adore, revealing his hubris towards his own notoriety and boundless intellect.
    Werner was a wonderful guest.

It's pretty incoherent. There is a schizophrenia in most modern Germans after the war. Not anything that he said is backed up by evidence but the propaganda is so pervasive before school, through school, throughout society. It's like someone being beaten and constantly told it's because they're bad
It fk's Germans up. Has for several generations

I'm glad he didn't include that audio, and I'm not surprised he was willing to do battle to keep it out of there. If you're curious what a man being slaughtered and eaten by a Grizzly Bear sounds like, you should spend time wondering why. I can't imagine a more terrifying, brutal, and terrible way to die. And you want to hear what it sounds like? I have more respect for Werner than almost all of the artists I look up to, and I would have lost some of that if he had. Just as a side note, I had to pickup Werner from that house they're in once early in the morning to take him to the airport, and just let me say meeting your heroes is typically disappointing, but not in his case. He is exactly as he appears, and I wish I had been able to drive him to where ever his plane was going.
