In this video, we’re going to talk about the difference between B2B Sales and Business Development. This is especially valuable if you in any sales role like being an account executive, account manager, sales development rep, or business development rep.
B2B Sales is a sales model business that sells its products or services to another business (typically selling happens over the phone, in-person, and email). B2B sales require a salesperson to prospect into different companies who may be a great fit for their product or service. B2B sales is also more transaction vs. strategic.
The definition of Business Development is the process of developing growth opportunities and relationships with other organizations. Business development tends to be more strategic and focused on key partnerships vs. selling to as many customers as possible.

Three Key Takeaways: 1) B2B Sales is focused on the transactional aspect of getting one product/service into the hands of another company, 2) Business Development is focused on the strategic aspect of creating relationships with other companies and subsequently the opportunity for growth within both companies, 3) B2B Sales is a numbers game (meaning, the more people you reach out to, the more you can sell to), whereas Business Development is more about quality interactions and tactical foresight

Great breakdown of business development versus B2B Sales. In the Yzy and GAP collaboration you explain what business development is, highlight how it's strategic and not transactional, and how it benefits both parties. In B2B sales, is there a Business Development role that is different from what a Business Development Rep or Sales Development Rep does? If so, is that role entry level and is it called Business Development (as in not BDR or SDR)? My understanding is BDR and SDR are interchangeable,/one and the same. In your video you're explaining "Business Development" distinctively from these roles, but within the context of retail clothing brands. Does such a "Business Development" role exist in tech sales (that is not BDR/SDR).

    I am challenging your definition.
I believe that BD is the collection of all those activities, which result will have an effect on sales, marketing, the product, and on the strategy as well.
What you say is much more like "sales+KAM", or similar.
Sorry for my comment, I do it with good.

Yes, someone with a different background outside of sales can transition into business development. I got a free training about how to get started in sales patrickdang.com/sales-legacy-go-training
But to answer you real quick, you're going to need to learn how to do sales prospecting and generate meetings with other companies. Usually that involves cold email, cold calling, and leveraging LinkedIn.

Hello! I'm a Korean and live in Korea đŸ‡°đŸ‡·. Your video is very useful!
I want to work for business Development team. However it is hard to get a business Development job in Korea right after graduating from University.
And It is easy to get a B2B salesman.
So I'm thinking to get a B2B sales job first in Korea after graduating from University and change my job to Business Development in a foreign company.
    1. Do you think it easy to change job from B2B salesman to Business Development?
    2. Do you think my plans are possible to achieve my dream?
If you give me a advice, I can make a plan well and recommend my friends to watch this video!
I will wait for your answer!

    • @patrickdang
      @patrickdang  Pƙed 3 lety +2

      1. Yes it’s possible because both jobs require a very similar skill set. As long as you know how to generate leads, build relationships and close; you can do both roles
      2. I haven’t had a job in Korea so I’m not sure how easy or difficult it to work at an international company. As an American, it’s not too difficult to do.
      Hope that helps

Also, you can start off on business development first if you want. You don’t have to do B2B sales then Business dev.
