Don't know if you were aware but anime came to Mexico and the rest of the Latin Americans before it came to the States.

Coming back to this later: I really actually like how the _predator_ is the one to emphasize caution and patience, because that's how carnivores actually work in real live. Hunting is expensive, calorie-wise, so most predators don't strike unless they think they'll get a good return on investment - they can't afford to burn themselves out chasing after healthy prey that can just get away from them or defend itself! Meanwhile, herbivores are able to eat constantly without expending anywhere near as many calories, so they can afford to expend a lot more calories running away from even theoretical threats... or striking preemptively, which is why hippos are so terrifying.

I think if Hylarmos teaches to always stop when you've had your fill it makes little sense to attribute "always hungry" to him later on in the piece. What I'd think about doing is instead giving "always hungry" to Maripome instead, and have their dynamic be that Maripome acts to save the animals and Hylarmos acts to save the forests which would mimic real life circumstance of overabundance of prey animals and also show that Hylarmos acts for the ancient traditions, being that the forest will always be older than any one entity inside of it.
I also agree with Hylarmos not looking quite "right". Personally since Maripome looks so futuristic I'd make Hylarmos look like it was carved out of stone. I'd really recommend looking at some of the amazing statues and rock carvings of the mesoamerican peoples and play closer to those, but that's me.
One last thing and this is probably just a peeve of mine, I think the hats on the Ateangler and Beakpeep should be thicker around the rim, doesn't sit right with me that they look paper thin at the "corners" (where it wraps into the background).

    • @nifdoowo

I realize I made it sound like you hadn't looked at those states for reference even though you clearly had, whoops. Meant only that playing closer to what they literally look like (signs of aging) would be a good look forward.

    • @testerwulf3357
      @testerwulf3357 Před 2 lety +31

The "always hungry" thing doesn't fit for a reason..it's the humans misunderstanding the balance causing humans to have massive hunger, but if anything hunger isn't talking about appetite! It's the need for more things like territory and power, which predators do actually have (predators keep territory even fighting other predators to gain more). Predators are taught to stop eating but weren't taught to stop gaining more of other things specifically humans who misunderstood the legendaries. Predators maintain territory, always trying to gain more or maintain theirs, whilst prey is always fleeing around meaning they don't really have much.
Plus making prey overly hungry destroying the forest whilst predators save the forest gives that "ones bad the other is good" feeling he didn't want.

I think some good changes were made to the lore but it does still feel like it could be a bit more cohesive. I said a similar thing about overabundance vs sustainability on the last video I think it's a really strong interpretation of predator vs prey
I also agree that hylarmos doesn't quite look right still. for me the claws look copy pasted and they make the stance kind of weird. a move of fovus away from the claws to the fangs could be a good move.

Idk, I feel like we shouldn’t push the sentiment that Traditional=Feral, it’s basically like saying traditional is bad, futuristic is good, which was the point of the redesign itself to prevent this. Either way, Hylarmos is a predator, not a mangy dog, and predators are known for their cunning as well as their intelligence or strategy more than they’re known for being rabid.

    • @donttrustnoone3921
      @donttrustnoone3921 Před 2 lety +2

I personally think Hylarmos could look a little more mythological (I personally think that compared to Maripome, Hylarmos does not really give that much of a legendary aura), and a much better pose to really push the primal predatory feel.
Also, I think its design is a little too heavy and bulky looking for something that has 130 speed.

    • @TheCarbonMirror
      @TheCarbonMirror Před 2 lety

Hylarmos looks to sleek which makes it look mor futuristic. It would look more ancient if it was made out of stone, maybe even with moss or something growing on it. but stone with cracks and cement lines and a time weathered roughness could really help. I think the last design captured this fairly well but I prefer this design maybe taking some of the armor bits from the last design and merging them with this current design would get it there.

    Concept for the "awakening" animations:
Both would initially be suspended in the air by whatever mystical force imprisoned them.
*Maripome* starts out with its arms. After it comes to life with a few twitches, the arms start unfolding in an asymmetrical manner. Its movements in general appear as if it has to "unstick" its limbs from itself, "freeing" both arms at different rates, similar to a butterfly emerging from its pupa. As soon as the eyes are uncovered, they open and begin darting around the place - even before the head quickly and suddenly snaps into place, followed shortly by the wings. As the last step it extends its legs from where it is suspended all the way to the floor and takes on a position ready to jump and flee at a moment's notice. That pose would be its "splash panel" as an introduction - but the cutscene extends a little past that, with it instantly darting off afterwards.
My main intention with that is to convey both the nervous nature of a prey animal (instantly looking around, bursts of movement and always ready to flee) and typical insectoid movement (twitchy - either fast or none at all, the majority of the body stays still while individual parts move). Those would combine into the body language of a being that's disoriented and instantly on edge after being awakened from its stasis.
*Hylarmos* on the other hand starts out shifting a bit as if waking up from a slumber. First it unfurls its tail in a slow wavy motion. Having its legs now freed, it falls from suspension and lands with a ground shaking impact. It then begins stretching out its arms and slowly shifting around its body - all while keeping its eyes closed as if it didn't really want to wake up yet. Raising its head high it sniffs the air, which prompts it to pause. The scent it picked up is motivation enough to finally open its eyes, which then instantly lock onto the player. It takes a step forward and menacingly brings its head down, while raising one of its arms off the ground to free it for "other uses"... This would make for its "splash panel", with the camera located behind the player, looking up at the creature mustering them.
With this I want to convey a feeling of "superiority" that a being at the top of the food chain would possess (casual movements, keeping the eyes closed, taking its time), but also visualize the ferocious power and hunting instinct (heavy drop, snaps into aggression out of nowhere, threatening behavior). In contrast to its counterpart it doesn't fear anything - instead it's used to be the one everything else fears.

The lore and the two legendaries got me thinking about what this region’s trio master could be. And I thought well, we already have the first predator and the first prey... What if the last member of the trio is the first _parasite?_
This could add to the lore too! Perhaps it was this legendary that corrupted the first human tribes, causing them to fight each other in order to weaken their chosen legendaries. The master plan was to weaken and imprison both of them, and the parasite Pokémon has been feeding on their life force for the last thousand years.
In terms of gameplay, I have a few ideas. I think it should have the psychic type, which is super effective against both poison and fighting-this also represents the idea of stealing life force/energy. And to go along with the abilities of the other legendaries, I think it should copy all of its opponent’s stat changes. It is a parasite, after all. But this shouldn’t be _too_ broken, because it will copy stat drops as well as stat buffs.
Above all, I just love the concepts you guys are coming up with, and the legendaries especially have knocked it out of the park!

This is a fantastic idea for rounding out the trio! I'd love that, and maybe the secondary typing would be ghost or dark, since it sounds kind of evil or sadistic if it's turning corrupting human tribes. Not sure which would be better, though. For battling, preferably Psychic-Dark, because Psychic-Ghost has two quadruple weaknesses so would be too easy to beat, but then it has a quadruple weakness to Maripome's bug moves. So maybe thematically, Psychic-Ghost would work better, since the parasite can't be easily beaten by either of the other two

While I don’t know much about Mexican culture and traditions, it would be cool if it was some kind of Drifloon reversal of the scenario, and a bit of a pun on the term “safety scissors” the scissors design would seem safe and fine to touch with round edges, but also have an unsettling side or feeling around it. Perhaps a ghost tried inhabiting the scissors to use it as a weapon, however was unable to, since the scissors were to blunt, so it instead uses the safety of the scissors to it’s advantage to make kids to use it, and then possess them to do evil deeds once they pick the pair up.

dang, this is a great idea!
(i went over the past legendary trios, but removed it because i hit the 10k character limit - more info at the bottom.)
hylarmos and maripome, as predator/tradition and prey/progression, share the most in common with gens 5 and 6, with hylarmos somewhat representing death and truth, and maripome representing life and ideals.
a potential third legendary could be either a sort of 'parent' of the two, or a balancing force that comes in to put a stop to them whenever either goes too far. these ideas can coexist, as well; the third could be the creator/master of hylarmos and maripome, as well as the absolute hammer that will come down upon them if they disobey its orders.
if such a thing existed, it would have to be written into the lore - it wouldnt make sense for the ancestors of the mazah people to have turned these deities into monsters, just for the third to not intervene at all. maybe the two tribes, seeing their mistake, call upon this creature to help them seal hylarmos and maripome away? after all, it would be a tall order for humans to seal away legendary pokemon while they were in the middle of an epic battle.
      so, heres my idea:
once, there was a great being that watched over all the pokemon in its territory. these pokemon were constantly fighting; some to feed, some to survive. from time to time, the hunters would nearly drive their targets to extinction, leading them to starvation. at other times, the hunted would grow strong, and beat back their tormentors, only to overpopulate and, once again, lead themselves to starvation.
seeing this pattern repeat endlessly, the great being created two helpers: hylarmos and maripome. hylarmos was to rule over the predators, teaching them never to take more than they needed, lest they eat themselves to death. maripome was to rule over the prey, teaching them how to defend themselves, and not to expand too much, lest they, yet again, eat themselves to death.
(after it made them, it rested, and things were good, but then humans showed up and ruined everything.)
as for stats, typing, and ability, it ought to in some way mirror the other two, while being superior to them.
for its typing, its stab moves should be supereffective against both of its creations. hylarmos is weak to fire, ground, psychic, rock, and steel, while maripome is weak to fire, psychic, and fairy, as well as having a 4x weakness to flying.
since both of them are weak to fire, we can have that be the first type of this creator pokemon. they dont share any other weaknesses, but maybe the second typing should ensure that none of their stab attacks are super effective against their master?
hylarmos' stab combination is super effective against grass, ground, flying, dragon, and fairy, while maripomes stab combination is super effective against normal, grass, ice, psychic, rock, dark, and steel. the remaining types that neither can hit super effectively are fire (taken), water, electric, fighting, poison, bug, and ghost.
so, the options are fire water, fire electric, fire fighting, fire poison, fire bug, and fire ghost. fire ground, fire flying, and fire dragon are also options, since the fire typing cancels out the ice weakness. fire fighting is overdone, and fire bug would be a terrible typing defensively, as would fire poison and fire flying. that leaves us with fire water, fire electric, fire ground, fire ghost, and fire dragon, all of which are super cool. well decide which is best later.
next are its stats. heres what ive come up with:
      HP: 90
      ATK: 160
      DEF: 100
      SP. ATK: 140
      SP. DEF: 170
      SPD: 50
so. why did i pick these stats?
first, its base stat total is 700, 20 points higher than both hylarmos and maripome. i figured it should be stronger than either of them, since it created both of them, and as a god-like being, moreso than any other pokemon since gen 4, i figured it was deserving of being in-between 680, the BST of most box legendaries, and 720, the BST of arceus, creator of all pokemon.
as the creator of both the ultimate predator and the ultimate prey, i thought it should be both strong and bulky, but slow itself. this is for a few reasons.
from a lore perspective, it would make sense that it needed to make helpers to go out into the world and do its bidding if it was too slow to do it itself.
from a theming perspective, it sort of rounds out the trio in a couple of ways: we would have a being that hunts, a being that is hunted, and therefore flees, and a being that has no need to hunt nor flee. it does not need to eat, and it cannot be eaten. this also sets up a juxtaposition with all the pokemon it watched over, predator and prey, who were stuck in an endless cycle of starving themselves to death. it also kind of mirrors the natural reaction to a threat: fight, flight, and freeze. hylarmos, of course, fights, maripome flees, but this creator pokemon freezes. not out of fear or an effort to survive the encounter, obviously - it just doesnt need to do anything.
(from a competitive perspective, this means you have to use speed control to take advantage of its busted stats.)
(because its slow, we can get rid of fire electric typing. also, thats the gen 5 legendary types, and we will get rid of fire dragon for similar reasons.)
now, its ability. hylarmos' ability raises its offensive stats when its opponents stats are lowered, and maripomes ability raises its speed when it enters battle. the creators ability should raise its stats as well, but which stats to raise, and how?
heres what im thinking - when this pokemon knocks out another pokemon with a physical move, its attack and defense will increase. if it knocks out another pokemon with a special move, its special attack and special defense will increase. as for the name... how about triumph? maybe its a little goofy, but it makes enough sense - "when this pokemon triumphs over its foe, it raises both attack and defense for the kind of move it used, physical or special". its definitely a strong ability, and it matches the other two, so... yeah, lets go with that. Triumph.
now, ive said everything there is to say, except for the typing. fire water, fire ground, and fire ghost.
for fire water, weve only ever gotten one pokemon with that typing, volcanion, who is a mythical, and therefore has never been legal in competitive play, not to mention how few players even have one. this would get a fire water type into peoples hands, and we could finally see this interesting type shine somewhere that isnt a movie. as for why it would actually be a fire water type, fire is one of the types most synonymous with life, and the ocean is where life began. this pokemon could also be tied into the four ocean legendaries from the mermay event; perhaps it sent them to control the seas while hylarmos and maripome were sent to rule the land? it doesnt seem as if either of them would be particularly good swimmers, after all.
fire ground is typing only held by numel, camerupt, and primal groudon. this typing has seen much more use, both in casual and competitive play, but since none of those pokemon exist in gen 8, and primal groudon is likely to never return, it definitely wouldnt hurt to give this type combo a little more representation. as for why it would be fire ground, fire, as i already said, is associated with life, and ground is associated with stability. ergo, it would make sense for this pokemon, who is very concerned about the stability of life in the mazah region, to have this typing. it is the foundation upon which the mazah region and its ecosystem are built.
finally, fire ghost. its a bit more common than the other two typings, starting out im gen 5 with just litwick, lampent, and chandelure, and then exploding in popularity in recent history, with alolan marowak, blacephalon, hisuian typhlosian, and, if rumors are to be believed, the final evolution of fuecoco. however, fire ghost is, scientifically speaking, one of the most dope typings to have ever existed, so one more wouldnt hurt too much. as for why it would have this typing, once again, fire type is associated with life, while ghost type is obviously associated with the dead. life and death are very important themes in both the mazah region and its real-world counterpart, mexico, so a fire ghost typing would reflect that nicely. lorewise, this is the being that oversees the life and death of every pokemon in the mazah region, and was upset that the harmony between these two forces kept falling out of balance. its also easy to see those typings in its helpers; hylarmos, as a deadly hunter and an ice poison type, would almost certainly have ghost as its third typing if such a thing existed, while maripome, the fast and beautiful bug fighting type, whose wings literally look like fire, definitely embodies the fire type, and i imagine they would both get ghost and fire coverage moves, respectively.
so, now that we know basically everything about these three typings, and why the creator pokemon would have them, which one should it have? personally, my vote would go to fire water, because we dont have a proper, fully usable pokemon with that typing, and my runner-ups would be fire ghost and then fire ground. but, since you were insane enough to actually read this novel on a pokemon that doesnt exist, what are your thoughts? which of those three typings do you think it should be? or maybe i got everything about this wrong; maybe it should be a grass electric type, and the stats should be different, and it should have a different ability - id love to hear anyone elses thoughts on this!
(my comment was a bit too long (12000 characters) so i had to remove a few paragraphs, sadly. my main points are still there, though. i paraphrased all the parts that i deleted in parentheses.)

Watching this video gave me another idea for the dynamic between Hylarmos and Maripome: trophic cascade and predator/prey populations. My idea is to portray Hylarmos in a more sympathetic light by making Maripome's concept be based more on how prey animals tend to grow and reproduce very quickly. Obviously legendary Pokemon don't reproduce because they're special, but Maripome could eat and eat like every meal will be its last. Without Maripome distracting Hylarmos, it would consume all people and Pokemon alike, but without Hylarmos chasing Maripome, there would be no food left for anyone.
I'm not going to keep waxing lyrical about reading into symbolism like the arms-race between them or human population/consumption in this comment, and I'm obviously not the one in charge of their lore, but I just wanted to make my own suggestion from my interpretation.

I’ve been reading a lot of comments talking about how there should be a “corrupted” form for these two, showing the toxic outcome of pushing human nature onto traditionalism or modernism, and I think that’s actually a great way to make a third legendary. Similar to Kyurem with Reshiram and Zeckrom, you can have a third legendary based on the evil of human nature, and have that Pokémon be able to merge with either to make the corrupted version of them.

I remember having thoughts of a fungal Pokémon representing decay at one point symbolizing the final destination of all life. Perhaps that could also be worked in as the decay of natural order at the hands of humans. And the fused form could look like some horrific fungal infection with decay trying to take these Pokémon before their time as the order has been upset to the brink of collapse. The strange thing would be that this Pokémon’s base form is a natural part of the process. All things die and decay and it helps to decompose and fertilize the soil for new life. But human activity has unknowingly mutated and corrupted it. And it spreads this blight to other creatures such as the legendaries.

The new lore is a big improvement! I study ecology and the old lore bothered me because of how much it vilified Hylarmos and by extension predators, who are actually deeply important to ecosystem balance; the new lore reflects that better. If you were going to make a third legendary to balance the two I'd suggest one of two things: a decomposer Pokemon whose role is to ensure that new life comes from that which is lost (both enforcing the ecosystem and ensuring that changes made lead to growth), OR a natural disaster Pokemon, representing forces beyond anyone's control that can in one fell swoop both destroy years of change for the better and force even the most stubborn to adapt or die. Either of these would be a fitting balancing force in a hypothetical third version where Maripom and Hylarmos are forced to battle once more.

Looking at Hylarmos, I still think it looks kind of passive(?), it doesn't feel like The Predator, a creature know as The First Hunter should look more, how can I explain, Hylarmos is intimidanting, but they lack that brutal nimbleness apex predators have, nothing left a bigger mark on me than seeing a jaguar run 9 meters within a second and them leap another 4 in the air to attack a monkey.
Maripome is great on my eyes now, perhaps making the lower wings just a little bigger would make it better, but I don't know. Gohila was a great improvement on the design and deserves another mini kaiju to fight.

The Pangolins are armored carnivores, but they don't look it. It could be like a snapping turtle or crocodile. Both are armored predators, but more the lie in wait kind than the chasing prey kind.
What does Hylarmos hunt normally? If it is the bug then something like a frog or pangolin may be better visual inspiration. Pangolin scales could curl into a ball like the shields did so maybe experiment with that?

I think part of it is because it kind of has the silhouette of a gorilla (like, technically quadrupedal, but very upright), which also lost some of the lizard ness. I think the lizard idea was great but it wasn't taken far enough.
I think that if Maripome looks like something mech-esque and also represents modernism, then Hylarmos should be... Rockier. Not like a rock type, but more natural, jagged edges/shapes, like a frost crusted beaded lizard or spike tailed iguana, so long as the concept of it being quadruped is COMMITTED to, and it has a rocky shape
Or like going for a more gecko-y silhouette could also work but I think that would take away from the ice type-ness

All of these new designs are phenomenal, especially the legendaries. Thoughts on your closing comments about Hylarmos; I agree that it feels like it's missing something, but I'm not really sure what that something is. Often, I have some difficulty figuring out what a design is missing until someone adds the thing it's missing and it suddenly clicks. Some thoughts:
-Both bipedality and quadrupedality make sense for a design like this; what if it could switch between the two?
-The first thing that comes to mind if I really rack my head is that it's a bit hard to tell where the neurotoxin mentioned in the Dex entry is coming from. The mouth, presumably, but those don't look like injecting fangs, they just look like sharp teeth meant to grab prey. Maybe it needs some longer fangs, pointing downward. Something that gives that snake-like venomous vibe.
-Related to the last point, a design like this can definitely afford to be fairly loose with regards to real-world biological consistency. You noted that most of your design influence changes were to reorient the design to be in line with common human predators a long time ago, i.e. large mammals, but something like this design could play in a lot of different spaces that represent different predatory species. I've seen it suggested that dragons are scary designs because they look like everything that's commonly been dangerous to us in prehistory; crocodilian reptile influence, body structure influenced by larger mammals like cats and bears, shark-like teeth, snake-like fangs (sometimes long necks and tails add to this motif as well), often intelligence on par with our own or with other large apes like gorillas. A "first predator" design could take influence from all of those areas and more and retain cohesion. A bloodcurdling chimera of everything that's ever gone bump in the night.
Love your work, these kinds of creative designs are what I'm hoping to see more of from the official games. Keep up the good work, man!

I think i have more issue with the new design for Hylarmos, mainly that this new one does not look like a hunter and to me it actually looks like of like a herbivore
Looking at its design i get far more a guardian creature feel from it, this comes from the shield like head, the flat face with a big chin, the bulky arms, and the more gorilla like shape/pose, i feel like a lot of the hunter/predator aspects got lost in this new design. while yes many mammal predators have front facing eyes, they also all have longer jaws and snouts, and i feel like that was more important. really at the moment it looks more like a guardian of something, and while it does look like it would be very ferousios and guard its territory, the idea that its a hunter does not really come thru its design
I think the more reptilian design works much better as while they don't have the front facing eyes, they are more known for being carnivores creatures (actually cannot think of a single vegetarian lizard), i think it would not only look more like a hunter, but have more of an apex predator feel, a predator above all other predators. the old design i think was better for that reason, it looked like a creature that would hunt down its prey, while it had a flatter face, the eyes on the side gave it a more carnivorous shape, the new arms look too bulky making the deign look more defensive and slow, and lastly in the old design the big pillar on its back actually added a lot to the design as it looked like a fin giving the create an almost shark like design, and i really like a slick shark lizard give off the idea of a hunter much better then a bulky monkey thing
basically i think the design needs to look more agile or at least mobile, a face that looks designed for hunting and fix the body shape to look less monkey and maybe hunting creature

Really loving the new insectoid Maripome, it looks amazing, much more fitting with everything you've already laid out. The concept for a monkey hunting angry banana fish is also hilarious and would be iconic
The old Hylarmos design (while a bit flawed) looks significantly better. This one is just blue, with even less to point to its poison typing besides 3 small details of light purple. This also looks nothing like an ice type to be honest, this would be a water type before anything else. The gauntlet claws do not fit, they imbalance the design I think. The face is also worse, I think it has a lot to do with proportions.
Overall, Maripome is a huge improvement. The idea for the shield forms is really cool. Someone in a comment mentioned a corrupted form - maybe the old humans that used the earrings corrupted them by doing that? And now they are locked away. Maybe the player frees them and they rampage so they need to find a way to remove the earrings or revert them to their pure form.
Maybe you could use the old designs still as one of the forms. Maybe the new Hylarmos is more mammalian because it was corrupted by humans. Maybe the old more humanoid Maripome was corrupted by human aggression and greed so it became larger and more imposing. You could also do something with the shield forms to tie in with the themes of transition or meeting a middle ground like you've suggested, idk.
Really excited to hear the backstory and main plot of the region/story when you decide to do it. Have you thought of making merch based on some of the designs? It would probably sell really well.

I know they have a sugarcane stock that they use to fish, but what if they used their tail to fish instead? There’s a species of large cat that does that (the tail would look like a sugar cane stock, of course) It would cut out the tool use, which wouldn’t be ideal, but it feels a lot like Farfetch’d to me, especially with the pose. Maybe giving it a pose where it’s fishing and kind of “lying in wait” would give it more personality perhaps? With some sort of grass covering like you mentioned would also work very well.

And you had put in that Gohila used its tail fat like food reserves, I think a secondary form with a skinny tail like it hadn't eaten in a while would be interesting. It could also get some stat changes, like maybe it has increased speed but lowered defense. You could also push the venomous bite design by having it in the "Hungry Form" drooling venom from its mouth, which could also be a design that could take inspiration from Shin Godzilla when it spews the corrosive blood in its earlier stages of life. Not only playing with American depictions of Godzilla, but also Japanese versions too and some that maybe a lot of western fans haven't really seen as much of.

Atelangler: Very cute! I can see why you had an easy time with this bc it just looks effortlessly like a pokemon. I'd recommend giving it an evolution tho, bc single-stage normal types tend to be easily forgotten or dismissed, especially if they're not competitively viable. Maybe its evolution can change from using a rod to using a net, and in the competitive meta, it could function as a staller/tank. It could even evolve by successfully defeating X amount of Banagnaw's line.
Beakpeep: Very cute and very simple, pretty much perfect for a non-starter chick pokemon. Only thing I'd recommend is to make the hardhat even more look like an eggshell, just to be a little bit more explicit about it. Because rn it really does just look like a chick with a hardhat. Maybe its shape be more egg-like, maybe add a few more cracks and chips on the shell, etc.
Beakraft: Amazing. Instantly unique, not just among the two steel bird pokemon, but also among all the bird pokemon. Only small gripe is, at least in the render, the saw looks tacked on rather than being part of the design. Maybe make it blend in more seamlessly with the beak.
Gohila: Successful redesign. It's giving me a lot of Gen 3 energy with a little bit of Gen 4. I will say tho, there's something about this design that makes me wish it had goofier eyes. I honestly can't explain why.
Hylarmos: Sharp teeth and claws? Check. Large forelimbs? Check. Huge, long tail? Check. This is a fanged wyvern from Monster Hunter lol. Kidding aside, I do think this is a stronger design than the previous one. Especially appreciate how it no longer looks like Palkia. Also like how it looks threatening, but at the same time looks wise, especially compared to the old design. I will say tho I think it could look better if it were leaner. The apex predators in South American jungles are all lean (jaguars, anacondas, giant river otters, and even the caiman because they're not as large as crocs and gators).
Maripome: Almost everything in the new design is the opposite of what I recommended in the last video. And I ain't even mad lol. With the updated lore, this design works much better than what I had envisioned anyway, but I still appreciate the loss of the mandibles. And even tho I recommended even bigger wings plus a set of dragonfly wings, I like how these new wings lean into more of Maripome being agile. Overall, it now looks frail enough that it easily could be seen as something to be hunted, while having enough meat and edge on it that it can and will fight back.
However, one thing that bugs (hehe) me about it is it now looks like a mosquito, minus the long proboscis.

Also, the only reason mammals are more recognized as predatory by humans is because we didn't live in a time when Sea Scorpions, ancient Sharks, or reptiles were the main predators, and only in very ancient times did ancient humans (before and during homosapien reign) get hunted by giant birds in Africa, Australia, and other such places. Mammalian predators are the most common predators nowadays. Honestly if the legendaries had origin forms I could see the reptile form as an alternate version of the predator, while the prey could have its own origin form, etc. Not to put pressure to do so but it just popped into my head because evolution is chaos and always changing who fills the niches provided.

I imagine this pokemon hides in the muck waiting for the chance to strike out and can ditch it's dangerous ground type when in a longer-form battle underwater to avoid getting beat up by the local water types it's trying to prey on with it's electricity. Your mission would be to defeat/capture/calm down the frenzied Pokémon, stopping them from attacking ‘prey’ Pokémon. The prizes could range from developing happiness with your starter, to make them develop another form or you could get a shiny or even an event Pokémon that is seen as both ‘hunter’ and ‘prey’ - which can only be caught in this event. Gohila is also a great redesign, it looks much more solid and interesting and I'd die for that shiny. Ateangler is simple and effective! Very cute.
I think the re-designs of the leggies are definitely improved! The new lore is much more clear too.
The choice to put Hylarmos on four legs was definitely right, it looks more stable now. If you do do a third iterations, I'd say maybe give it a more horizontal spine? Right now it looks predatory and powerful but the one thing it's missing - I can't imagine it running. It's gorilla like posture is imposing but not as threatening. Feel like it'd be easy to escape from. I think the colour could be a bit flashier too. If you want to up the predator vibes even more, maybe making it's expression less composed and more savage? Mouth open or eyes looking a little crazy.
Maripome is honestly pretty perfect. The reduced wings, new arms and new head look amazing - another detail I like is them both having the same headcrest. The only thing I miss is the old colour scheme, it's a bit same-ey now. I liked the high contrast between the body and wings.

Aztec language pro tips from someone that studies it:
“x” is always the “sh” sound
“hu” is always a “wh” sound
    “cu” is always “kw”
    “qu” is always just “k-“
“ci” on the other hand is “see”
“tl” is a single syllable, not two. You make it by forming the shape of a “t” sound and then pushing out an “L” sound on the sides of your teeth.
Emphasis is always on second to last syllable. You can blame Spanish monks for weird spelling.
    Examples:
    Cihuatl - “SEE-watl”
    Macahuitl - “ma-KA-weetl”
    Axolotl - “ah-SHO-lotl”
    Huitzilipochtli - “wee-tsee-lee-POCH-tlee”
    Quetzalcoatl - “Ket-sal-KO-watl”

I actually enjoyed the simplicity of the original Heelzilla and I think that Gohila would actually serve as an excellent evolution. I imagine it being only slightly larger and lording it over the Heelzilla. Quite toxic behaviour you might say.

    • @iantaakalla8180
      @iantaakalla8180 Před rokem

Also, Heelzilla and Gohila sound like good comparison names. One sounds too on the nose like something related to Godzilla, like a Pokémon trying too hard to be like Godzilla but it is too non-threatening, while Gohila sounds like it is a Pokémon that is small but terrifying, like a Pokémon based off of Godzilla (or Gojira, as is obvious by the name). Therefore, it would evolve from
Heelzilla to Gohila to signify that it is much more effective at being a terrifying mini-kaiju Pokémon, and the addition of spikes also indicate this.

I ADORE the new birds, and both Gohila Atelangler feel like they fit right in.
If I had to critique Hylarmos, I would say my main gripes are with the sleek features which soften the excellent silhouette, the maneuverability problems with the anatomy, and maybe the colour scheme.
    Colour:
-I feel the Ice aspect of the design isn't communicated by the shade of aqua blue in the tail/front. The colours currently give me the feeling of a timid psychic rock type rather than a ferocious hunter. As it stands, the glossy blue portions don't strike me as being ice-related. This may actually be more related to the material/texture of the body though, rather than colour.
    Features:
-The smoothness and gloss of the tail don't feel particularly dangerous and give off a kind of toy-ish feel to me, whereas an edged 'cut ice' look with some sharper planes might give a deadlier appearance. It's also the only aspect of the design that feels poisonous in any way, so the neurotoxin thing feels unexplored.
-The silhouette feels wonderfully threatening, but the rounded look of the claws and patterning might be softening it a bit (though this may be integral to the design origins, so I'm not certain). At the very least, Dialga and Palkia can be seen with much more sharp features and edged grooves, which prevents them from looking too smooth across the board.
    Maneuverability:
-The hind legs don't feel nearly solid enough to support the huge front weight of the head and fore legs, so I can't imagine it pouncing on anything or lunging viciously. In addition, the ski-like protrusion of the claws seem like they'd make walking very difficult.
-If we use the stalking poses of tigers, bears, and wolves for reference, I can't picture this Pokemon being able to comfortably hunch its shoulders and prepare for a jump due to it's bulky chunks. Perhaps integrating it's armoured legs further up the shoulders and spreading the claws into a more maneuverable distribution could help with the flow of force in the design.
-If the tail and body were lower to the ground, with a pose akin to the flow of a snake rising it's head slightly out of its wide slither (think Smaug stalking across the ground), with the weight weaving across the design, you could really magnify its presence. Like a huge spring, winding itself up.
Hope these points can be of use! Keep up the great work!

I don't know which gender of Beakraft I would have on my Mazah region team, but I know I would have one of them, lol.
The redesigns all look wonderful as well, it always impresses me just how much the designs improve every time they are iterated on.
Though I do agree with what some other commenters have said about Maripome seeming kind of out of place for being the prey pokemon, I know insects are pretty traditionally prey for pretty much everything else, other bugs included, but it's just kind of hard to associate it as prey to my human brain.
Maybe you could make it into a trio, adding in a more traditional prey animal design, something more visibly herbivorous like an antelope or cow, and then having Maripome be more of a locust-like "eats everything, prey and predator alike" kind of theme, to play off the other two.
I'm happy seeing whatever the channel makes regardless tho, I love watching, and always look forward to the next video. ^^

22:04 their Dormant forms look like a cicada cocoon for maripome and an egg for hylarmos, hylarmos being an egg in their dormant state represent traditional as all animals layer eggs in the past but the newest subclass of animals, mammals, and some sharks give birth to live young, while mairpome being a cocoon represents modernism as insects change their shape the most out of all animals, and have seen a different life before under going metamorphosis.

There's something still off to me about Maripome, and after some thinking, i've decided it's because it looks more like an ultrabeast to me, instead of a pokemon. Ultrabeasts were designed to look different from pokemon, more humanoid. It might be worth it to make Maripome look more like a butterfly and less like a human to avoid it looking like something foreign to pokemon.
And an Idea for a steel type cold be an alpaca, using steel wool as an inspiration.

  • @samtemming7085

I actually really liked Hylarmos with a red mouth and accents instead of the purple; purple may speak to the poison typing but nothing quite says “predator!” like a bloody (colored) maw. As for Maripome, beautiful job, it seems so nimble, yet oddly tough and calculating. I almost want to see the colors on its wings inverted, with a lighter interior and the darker red tips.
One other aspect to modern legendary Pokémon designs is the incorporation of a unique signature move: for Hylarmos, I feel like there’s a biting move that has a healing or instant KO effect attached, potentially named Consumption or something similarly brutal. Maripome, on the other hand, seems like it might have a buffing move similar to Geomancy. Maybe a Protect variant that provides a buff, representing how it examines how best to out do its attacker while nimbly dodging?

The blue legendaries claws give me really heavy digging rather than predatory vibes. I think it could be either because of the massive size or the close and unvaried shapes. Bears have digging claws so maybe it's better for making it seem like a more interesting animal with many behaviors though, idk.

Making Hylarmos quadrupedal was a brilliant move, it makes it look really sturdy and dangerous. And I think I get the ice typing now. This is a patient predator, one that stalks and waits for the right moment to strike. Very clever! Also, the legendaries folding into balls reminds me of Bakugan which I haven't thought about in a long time and that makes me happy. Plus the story of them going dormant and being sealed away sort of parallels catching a legendary and immediately storing it in the PC. I love this.

I remembered of an art movement that completely rejected the past called futurism that emphasizes movement and the modern human inventions, even stating that they sould burn the Louvre, yes the movement in its conception glorifies war and it's against feminism so it isn't really progressive but I think the complete disregard for the past (asides from the existence and message of the box legendaries) could perhaps be explored in the progressive tribe

Still feel as though the typing of the predator legendary is wrong, though definitely better incorporated in this form. Just in the fact that as a predator vs prey dynamic shouldn't the predator have some sort of advantage over its prey, like maybe a fire typing to work against that bug typing. Other than that my other points still stand. Awful offensive/defensive typing, doesn't really match the lore.

  • @terririnella4032

yes, this region could use more flying forms, maybe some region variants:
Chatot, with ground or rock, cause they eat clay and minerals to help deal with poisons from fruit seeds and missing dietary minerals
Braviary, even though it got a region form recently, but one based on a Harpy Eagle, have it associated with the ancient civilization and the Legendary "First Hunter"
Zubat or Woobat, make them white and like the tent making bats that live together under leaves (part grass) or a Crobat based on one on the large predatory Vampyrium Spectrum or False Vampire (i think they are 2 different species), one of the species has a couple roosts in ancient temple ruins reclaimed by the jungle (Ghost/Rock and flying)
Skarmory, i always figured it was based on Hoatzin, a redesign where it lives in thorn trees with more distinct wing claws, but a more colourful body, and a belly (it eats leaves, and apparently is called Stink Bird, Steel/Grass and show it flying, walking, swimming and tree climbing)
Hoothoot, live in the desert and lives in burrows, maybe feed on honey ants and would need a new evolution, where they gave up flying and remained round and squat, better diggers and hop across the desert floor (part ground or dark...live underground and come out at night)
