  • I bought a jet outboard. Does it have enogh power to run shallow. Will find out together.
    Wanted one of these for a long time.Jet outboards are not very common were I live and I dont know much about how well they function. But after burying my prop drives in sandbars
    my whole life I'm ready to give one a try....try. I kept it cheap and light. Ready jet go!
    THANKS!!!!

      Your welcome Gary. Ive had a little time in it now and can run in 3-4 inch water. But have to keep the boat very light. I will do a follow up on the motor in a few months about what I think. If you run a livewell full of water, lots of gear or a couple people in the boat 25 hp isnt enough power. But just two people couple fishing poles and a cooler yeah its alot of fun.Blasting thru some shallows on a river were you never would have thought of before! Yeah its soo fun and will make you smile. Jet boating is very addictive and I now see why guys upgrade to bigger and faster jets. It will do it, but got to keep it light weight. Thanks for watching Gary

      Yeah its been ok so far. Its got me to some places that I would in the past walked the boat through by hand so its earning its money.But.... I already want a 40/30 this 20 is pretty slow. I dont want to go fast but into heavy current yeah....it crawls. Thanks so much for watching Kyle

    I can tell you one thing. You have the rarest outboard motor out there. I have been looking forever for a jet drive for mine. I have four or five 25 HP motors. I cant find a jet drive, broken or not to convert mine. I can buy a new kit but, Jesus they want too much for them. Looking for a motor with a blown power head or whatever to pick up a jet. If you know of any, give me a shout out. Thanks. BTW buy an adjustable jack plate. 👍👍

    You need to trim the jet out flat. Then raise it so the tip of the intake will mount flush

    • @johnnyfish6051
      @johnnyfish6051  Před 2 lety

      Ok, thanks. I appreciate your knowledge. When I trim it up it moves the foot six inches from the transom and is in the white water coming off the boat.

    Wondering if you put a plate on that bottom centered up where it’s from keel to keel with drain plug in center and then move drain plug because it sits lower a bit.That would give it a flatter surface.
    Dang sorry about the sand ! It’s a big problem (killer) for these pumpers .

    So a short shaft jet wouldnt work on a 15 inch transom?would it sit to low ?

    • @johnnyfish6051
      @johnnyfish6051  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yes, it would be too low. It would require a jackplate or build the transom up like I did in this video. I certainly don't have enough experience with jet outboards to be giving advice. I believe a 15" transom would need to be built up aleast six inches.

    I have a question for you. Where and how did you get a jet foot to mount on the 20hp. I thought the smallest was to fit a 25hp. I have a 20 yamaha and want a jet conversion, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thx Wes

    • @johnnyfish6051
      @johnnyfish6051  Před 6 měsíci

      I'm a total hack at this, but I'll try? When you put a jet conversion on an outboard, you lose a certain percentage of horse power compared to a prop drive. I believe it's around 15%. For instance, my Mercury is a 25-hp outboard. It has a 25-hp engine block and carburetor. But with the jet conversion drive , it loses 5-HP at the output compared to a traditional prop drive. Yes, 25-HP is the smallest jet made. Now I know some 25-HP outboards from the 1980's and 90,s shared the same engine block and mid section as a 20-HP. The only thing that separated a 25 from a 20 was the carb. So, with the mid section being the same, some 20 hp motors will fit a 25 hp jet conversion. I have seen one 20-hp jet for sale it was advertised as an 18/20 jet I believe it was an early 90's Yamaha. Not sure this applies to motors built after 2000.

    • @johnnyfish6051
      @johnnyfish6051  Před 6 měsíci

      I don't know what you got, but a 20 hp with a jet wouldn't keep a 10' boat on plain. If it's an older motor that's lost a little compression, it would be even less power.

    • @1moreford
      @1moreford Před 2 měsíci +1

      This is a 20 Jet rating motor. Due to the power loss it has a larger powerhead than the Jet Rating. I believe it is actually a 30HP powerhead.

    You still have it?

    • @johnnyfish6051
      @johnnyfish6051  Před 2 lety

      Yep, late in the fall sucked up enough sand to clog 75% of all the water jackets. I don't think I can run a jet on my rivers. Maybe with a tunnel so the foot has some clearance from the river bottom. But not like I'm set up, its literally a sand dredge. No amount of freshwater flush would clear it out. Every small port between the jackets had 4,5 or 6 large grains of sand wedged together causing the entire out board to back up with sand.

    • @johnnyfish6051
      @johnnyfish6051  Před 2 lety

      I did video the sand issue and damage done, yes damage! and might put the video out when I come to my conclusion. Just opened the powerhead two weeks ago and still scratching my head on what the future of this little jet will be. But I can definitely make a video for CZcams on the problem of running a jet in a river that's 100% sand bottom.

  • @1moreford
    @1moreford Před 2 měsíci +1

    I believe if you do a bit more research you will find you have a Merc 30/20 Jet. You loose about 1/3 of your rating from prop to jet. I had a 60/45 Jet a few years ago and IME it was a bit over rated as a Jet. Should have been called a 60/40 as they are now.
    Now that the industry has gone to 4-strokes the power/weight ratio is worse than it was with 2-strokes and they don't even make the 20 Jet anymore.
    For anyone wanting to make their own from parts look for the 30HP 2-stroke or better yet a 35HP 2-stroke which will give you about a 25 Jet.

    • @johnnyfish6051
      @johnnyfish6051  Před 2 měsíci +1

      25/20 , like anything else, you can swap alot of things, If you can do a little fab work. I've seen some funky homemade adapter plates.

      @johnnyfish6051  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yes, that's what I've originally always wanted an old merc 35 jet, it would be perfect on a 14 ft. Boat, rare find, though.
