  • Very loud! Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning reg. 13-5066 does a full afterburner takeoff from runway 24 for another round of testing during the HX Challenge. During rotation, the afterburner burned part of the runway causing a big cloud of smoke. Followed by Finnish Air Force F-18 reg. HN-410, both fighters under callsign MATRIX1.

    Hornet looks so small next to Fat Amy.
    p.s. Did it boil the runway because it was pretty damn wet to be "burned", and the hornet's jetwash also kicked up water, so I doubt it was smoke.

      @Ezees23 Před rokem +3

      That's a legacy Hornet, ie: a C model. The E/F Super Hornet is much larger than the F-35A. Plus, the F-35A has just as much thrust with it's one engine as the Super Bug's 2 engines and also having substantially longer range than the Super Bug - while being ~2,000 lbs lighter and having a ~15K higher ceiling. Both have excellent AoA capabilities but the F-35's is substantially greater.....

      F-35s enjoy an unfair tactical advantage over every other fighter currently in existence in the region in Air-to-Air, including against F-22As. They have been defeating F-22As in Large Force Exercises since 2017, and the F-22A enjoys a huge unfair advantage against everything else.
      F-35s can't see each other when in VLO mode, though they have the most advanced sensor suite in the world.
      They don't play by the rules that govern 4th Gen BVR metrics, and can bring any number of different tactics to the table that defeat all of the systems currently used on the very latest 4.5 Gen fighters.
      He who possesses this technology in significant numbers has the ability to erase regional air forces at will, and there isn't much that can be done about it.

      Luneberg lenses stay in place, and are turned off in VLO mode when tactically relevant. They can also intermittently be turned on and off in conjunction with certain tactics to entrap, lure, and ambush threat air and ground assets when working together that are extremely unfair.

      @@Mr98popol F-35A has one of the best climb and acceleration rates compared to other fighters except the Raptor, when combat-configured.
      It has good transonic acceleration like a slick Block 50 F-16C, not that this matters as much as it does for large RCS fighters.
      Once you combat-configure a Typhoon or Rafale for multi-mission capability, they get draggy pretty quick. In A2A-only with 1 centerline EFT and 4-6 missiles, Typhoon and Rafale are very slick, but they don't have as much radius or persistence as they do with 2-3 EFTs, and they don't have the FLIR pod.
      F-35A has comparable performance to them while carrying much more fuel, 6 AAMs, FLIR built into the nose always, with a vast RF and IR sensor suite that allows it to be a spyplane as well.

F-35 on the lther hand has an enormous engine, which puts out similar amounts of power as both of the hornets engines combined iirc, so I think they could at full burner at take-off have about the same level of noise. If you ever get a chance to see mass launches during Large Force Exercises, Super Hornets, Vipers, F-15Es, and Hornets all struggle to climb after take-off compared with F-35s. By the end of the runway, you'll see that F-35s have about twice the altitude and are already going faster.
      Carrying most of the weapons internally while having such a high thrust engine gives them take-off performance more like a relatively-clean Typhoon or Rafale.
