Not only can lamas go into boats. But you can essentially have your friend ride it while inside the boat, allowing you, 1 lama, and 2 people inside a tiny boat, and of course you now have a cargo ship : )

Here is the short version: You cant ride them like a horse hence they are a useless tame in minecraft. Have fun breaking your lead every 2 seconds and decorating them with carpets or carrying a small amount of extra loot in the chests you can attach.
