  • This video includes a photo walk through Chinatown here in San Francisco, California, as well as a review on the Voigtlander Bessa R2M. The Bessa R2M is commonly known as being the best alternative to the Leica M6. In this video, I'll explain why I believe that to be true.
    Camera: Voigtlander Bessa R2M
    Film Stock: Ilford FP4

Thanks for the video. I've had an R3m for many years. With my Voigtlander 40mm lens, it's light and compact and I've traveled all over with it. It's also my go to camera for street shooting. Recently, I bought an M6 and I think you nailed the comparison. My M6 and Summicron lens can take beautiful photos. But, I think my R3m and Voigtlander lens got me about 90-95% of what I'm now getting with the M6. The Voigtlander Bessa cameras are real jewels. It's too bad that they only made them for a few years and now the prices have skyrocketed. It's worth adding that Voigtlander produces some world class lenses at a fraction of the cost of the Leicas. With Voigtlander lenses as good as they are, it's hard to justify paying Leica prices in most cases.

I love seeing other's talking about how great this camera is! I'm rocking an R2a + Voigtlander 35 f/1.4 as well.

Flipping your cap backwards to snipe bangers is something I can relate to. Nice photos man 🔥

Although there’s nothing at all wrong with shooting colour film in this (or any) camera, it’s nice to see black and white film being used in it. All those signs are just what I love to shoot, especially ones of high contrast and the old brick buildings too. I remember talking to an old man years ago about cameras and he reminisced about the Voigtlander he had and that it didn’t have a meter he said he used to guess the exposure. It was the first time I’d heard of Voigtlander. Thanks for sharing your camera and photos.

I use a Canon A1 and I'd love to find out what I could upgrade it to. So far this camera (r2) looks perfect. BTW your channel is insane man. I love it

Hi Brandon- fellow San Franciscan here..... I just picked up the R2m..... and heading out this weekend to take shots.... I have the Voigtlander 40mm 1.2 to mount on it..... I also have a 1970's Yashica 35 Electro GSN (fixed 35 lens) which has rangefinder...(the poor man's rangefinder)......... and numerous Nikon and Fuji 'stuff!'...... excited to try out the film camera- as shooting film does slow me down and make me think about what I am doing- which is great- Also- loved your Chinatown shots- Since lockdown- exactly a year ago today for me... as I write this- I have been heading out and shooting (documenting) the streets of San Francisco...... Pacific Heights, the Marina, Downtown, the waterfront- pretty crazy...... my shots in April were surreal.... standing in the middle of Post St downtown- and not one car to hit me...... anyway- thank you for the review- and if you see some goy walking the streets that looks like he needs a haircut- that's me. - One quick question- actually two- your first and only choice for black and white and color film- what do you use?........Cheers

Hey John! Thanks so much for the comment. Sounds like you have some great experience! Would love to shoot together sometime.
Lately I’ve either been grabbing Ilford’s Ortho 80 or FP4 125 for BW and then color, it’s a toss up between Kodak’s Ektar 100 or Portra 800. I guess it really depends on the time of day.

Great shots! It's so strange to see the streets empty since it's always been so crowded whenever I visit, but I guess you can also say that about the rest of the world.

The bessa r2, 3, 4 prices shot up also whats the servicebility for these? Great about leicas although expensive, there are plenty of places to get them repaired. These look like once it breaks get a tough time looking for a place to get it serviced.

It’s definitely a hard choice when you have them side-by-side. But I do love how much easier the Bessa is to load!
