Because the unappreciative youth weren't able to appreciate such sensitive intelligent choreography of such musical and lyrical genius.
    Just kidding.

Do you generally get rabbits and camels in the jungle?
Story I heard re Hank Mazel was that he recorded it in the early/mid 50s but it wasn't a hit until the 1970s. He only found out it had been re-released when he stopped for fuel somewhere out in the desert and it was playing on the garage radio.
Not sure if the use on the TV show Not the 9 o'clock News helped it to be a hit worldwide but it certainly helped it a lot in England.

I dig this tune! Matt The Cat plays it on XM Radio a lot. XM 5 The Night Prowl Show is where I 1st heard it. I'm glad that guy in the UK found it again. Great dance tune. Danny O'Donnell

They didn't get paid nearly enough. For about 50% of 70's British youth they were far more iconic and profound than Dylan!

So this completely obscure '50s American song became a hit in Britain in the middle 1970s...and here are scores of people writing comments that they remember this fondly. Meanwhile, in the USA, no one knows that any of this ever happened.
I suspect that this theme of animals having a rock & roll dance in the jungle might've been inspired by the sucess of "Rockin' Robin", whose lyrics told a similar story.

CZcamsr Ephyllon was kind to solve my conundrum regarding whether it was Legs & Co, or Ruby Flipper?:
to answer your question about the "Jungle Rock" routine... "TOTP classic and rare video from the glorious summer of 1976 and featuring Legs & Co.,or was it Ruby Flipper??"
this was Pan's People in their last lineup before they disbanded at the end of April 1976 (Ruth Pearson, Cherry Gillespie, Sue Menhenick, Mary Copse, Lee Ward)
    regards
