Be aware when working in china the chinese special investigation unit will load your apartment with micro spy cameras and bugs (mics). Avoid saying anything derogatory about the country or your employers (lots of mysterious poison related foreigners deaths have occurred, do your research) Good luck in china (small c)
Try to avoid long sentences like, "This is the color red." Just say "this is red". For early students, you need to avoid the challenge/response paradigm. I.e. don't ask "Are you happy?" Just smile and point to your face while saying one word only "happy". Doing actions is called TPR, you'll want to google that. You've got good approach already, however in the beginning, and especially for any demo class (your employer will have you do demo classes for new kids) - You must focus on a mimic based paradigm. E.g. Instead of saying "What's your name" You would just say, "Hello" and wave (TPR) "hello" and wave. It takes about one year before you'll be up to snuff as a teacher, and everything I just said is going to be second nature but right now you're green and it's going to be a little overwhelming. Do not narrate. Don't say, "And the last one..." - because they don't know that. If you say anything that they don't understand, they'll worry because they think they're supposed to get it. You have a tendency to narrate and fill in time, explaining stuff like, "OK, everybody's ready to go now, that's great!" - All they heard was gibberish, but now they're worried about it and feel like the class is too advanced for their level because they don't understand the teacher. Then they tell their parents that they don't understand the teacher and the ship is sinking. Excellent use of props and scaffolding. That's going to make a big difference. Red + apple on the wall. You nailed it. Absolutely nailed it. You turned the wall into a platform where things can be moved around dynamically. Doing any kind of combinatorics is going to be teaching gold, particularly because it provides a lot of speed and flexibility, that translates into efficiency. Whenever any future lesson ever feels slow, think back to 'red apple'. Most teachers here don't use props enough. Never lose that initiative. You'll be the top teacher at your job in no time. Chinese students will say things like, "It's a red." - so you want to be careful giving them a sentence pattern like "It's a green broccoli." Start simple first, "it's green." - Simplify language the same way that your math teacher simplified complicated formulas and operations. In language, it's almost a reverse path where you start simple and then build toward complicated expressions. Bounce back and forth with your color page and the broccoli. "It's green." "It's green." "It's green." "It's green." "It's green." "It's green." Then, show them that there IS a linguistic difference. "I see green."... I see yellow, I see orange, I see green... "I see a green broccoli" "it's green." "It's a green broccoli." This is going to come WAY easier if you do some graphic editing and have broccoli for each of the colors. They need to understand that a broccoli could be another color than green, so the meaning is "green broccoli" and not some green food called "greenbroccoli". It's a yellow banana, not a "yellowbanana" "yellow banana" is not the name of the fruit. They'll have a mental moment where they realize that green is green, and broccoli is broccoli, but this broccoli IS green. Now they understand WHY they say "it's green" if you point at green, and why they say, "It's a green broccoli" when you point at the broccoli. You gotta put yourself in their shoes. The sooner you do that, the better off you'll be in knowing HOW to approach ESL teaching. When saying a word like 'blueberry', you'll have to drop you speaking speed waaaay down. Not just because it's a compound word, but because your kids are still learning to differentiate sounds. They're going to echo back, "boobery". Lose the accent. That's not going to come easy, but there's certain words that Brits shoot out lightning fast, or pronounce in a way where it's night impossible to decode the sounds into the correct letters, even if you understand decoding. They'll be learning decoding, and it'll be easier for them if you're using a somewhat more phonetic style of pronunciation. As they're listening, they're training their ears to understand mouth noises that aren't part of Chinese. For example, Chinese people mix up pronunciation of 'L' and 'R'. They mix it up when listening as well as speaking. The bottom line is that you want to go slightly overboard on enunciation, particularly when introducing new words. BL-EW-BEAR-YYyyyyy. With going overboard, overwork your mouth as well. A bit part of listening is watching the shape of your mouth. "Red, yellow, green, and blue" - You nailed that. Use of chants makes a serious difference in the classroom, you'll find that it's one of the top tips for fast memorization. Turn everything into chants. You've obviously studied teaching. You're displaying theory and techniques which some fresh off the boats won't adopt until they're already about three to six months in (or more). I'm interested in showing the ropes to new teachers. If you're passing through Shanghai, I can give you a flash drive which has over 500 instructional teaching videos that I created myself in the last year. You'll see good ESL activities, methods, etc. I hook up all the new teachers at my center, but now I want to start reaching out to other new ESL teachers in China. You put a LOT of thought and work into your demo video. You are a prepared teacher. You apply theory. You're already teaching like someone that has some experience. People like you are going to develop good activities, routines, games, and teaching approaches. Just bring a flash drive with about 34 gigs of space to spare. I know that's a lot, but I'm a collector of sorts when it comes to quality ESL content. This is how we used to learn Irish in infants class. It was far more effective than the poetry and grammar drills we did in secondary school.
