I think it's more vocabulary training than katakana training. Since we see the english word first for 5 seconds, we can already think about a possible translation for the word. Then, when you show the katakana for some seconds, we immediately hear the pronunciation of the word. When I hear the pronunciation of a word it's really easy to read it, because I know how it's supposed to sound. I don't really read the katakana anymore but just repeat your pronunciation.
If it's meant to be katakana training, I think it would be better to show the katakana first without english or pronunciation, maybe even without picture which could give a hint. And then after 5 seconds show the english translation and japanese pronunciation. By this we would be forced to really read the katakana and not just repeat what we heard or translated.

@@paper2222 don't fall for that trap. It might seem like that at first, but it's not the case. There's words which have a different meaning than you'd guess when just assuming the word is the same as it's english counterpart would be. Also even if the majority of katakana words is english, there's also those which are loan words from other languages and sometimes katakana are even used for japanese origin words for emphasizing on certain words or similar.

Don't they have Japanese words for orange and apple though? (ringo, etc.) It's weird that this is mainly phonetically pronouncing English words the Japanese way. Why is iced tea not atsui ocha? Japan existed way before the British or Americans went there ... Strawberry is ichigo, not su-tu-ra-be-ri ... Does a Japanese person really order it as su-tu-ra-be-ri and not ichigo?
