My grandparents lived through both world wars. In fact, our family had individuals serving in military services on both sides during each war. Born in 1950, I was lucky not to have directly experienced the hardships. These recordings bring back many of the stories related to me by my grandparents. I can remember the tears in my grandfather's eye as he spoke of his brother still in Germany, and the way his voice would fail when reading a letter from one of my uncles; one at Normandy, another a POW in Stalag 12. Thank you for publishing these broadcasts. They keep alive the history about which subsequent generations are unaware, or (sadly) been told never happened.

3:48:40 "We gave our pledge. All that we are, we said, all that we could ever hope to be, for these men. A pledge sanctified with the youth and flower of a great people. It was a pledge we gave in the darkest hour our people have ever known. Let us honor it, and thereby honor ourselves and prove that we were worthy of it. In that same pledge we gave, we said there would be no discrimination because of race, creed or color. We said we'd fight for this. We'd fight to prove we can live without prejudice and discrimination. Every man who fails to honor that pledge is fighting Hitler's war, even now."

At 5.09, Hap Arnold talks about the role of the air forces in the victory in Europe, and he reminds everyone in the midst of rejoicing, that air power again will be decisive in defeating Japan. My father had just finished his tour with the Eighth Air Force flying out of Kimbolton air base in England as a radio operator/gunner in a B-17s. He then was redeployed to California to get ready for the Japanese campaign. Instead, Japan surrendered, he met my mother, married, had three kids and lived a good life in California. He had nightmares for years, but at least he got back alive.
