Goebbels Speech about the State of the War- 28 February 1945

  • As public appearances became more and more difficult for Goebbels, both because organizing such mass events under the threat of allied bombings was almost impossible, and because most stadiums, halls etc. where such large events could be held were already destroyed, Propaganda shifted more towards the radio, as it was the only thing that large parts of the German population still had access to.
This speech is from late February 1945, and in it, Goebbels tries again to motivate and stir up the Germans people defensive will.

"And this (was done) to us Germans! Is there (even) one among us, who in the face of these horrors -- which normally a human brain cannot even think out, but which here have been committed by monsters walking in the shape of humans -- would dare standing before his national leaders and ask them to pack up and let such an enemy have his way against our whole people?"

After the war, some British people listening to German radio late at night, were astonished to hear high-quality classical music. They thought the orchestras must be awake, doing some kind of weird night shifts. Actually, it was just recordings. Germans pioneered recording high quality audio to magnetic tape. Until then, only live broadcasts would have been near that quality. Recordings from phonographs/ vinyl records, wax cylinders or metal tape were really poor at the time.

I saw this information everywhere. "The only sound recording of AH "not shouting" and speaking his day to day voice". It's just not true. I wasn't digging too much but I found at least one original video with his voice. I don't remember if it was in weekly DW or some other source but Germany was visited by I believe it was English diplomatic "mission" where AH, with calm voice, praises what Italians and especially Duce did with the transformation of northern swamps and reshaped them into usable farming areas.
Edit: And I also wanted to say I strongly believe there must be TON of original material, audio and video, which never saw light of the day and even until now is stored somewhere in the archive or personal collection.

Modern microphones aren't really any better than old ones, the tech had already been brought to a sufficiently high level by the 1940s. And the one Goebbels used would have probably been top of the line, hand made rather than the cheap mass produced ones which most people use these days.

That is "print-through" on the analog tape. Any time you hear it, if you listen carefully you will hear that a second or so later, he pronounces something sharply and the print-through has simply anticipated the sound, due to the magnetism being transferred from one layer of the tape to the next. In terms of recorded levels this tape was obviously being pushed to the limit and beyond; you can hear that from the spittiness and smearing of the "s", "sh" and "st" sounds, and to record at such high flux levels also invites print-through.

I hope not. There are too many documentaries about this era all using recycled material. However would you consider translating the videos on "In respect of Maurice De Wilde" ? As I believe only personal accounts from the other side are of interest now. Consider TIKs Stalingrad videos are only averaging 100,000/200,000 views despite the huge effort that goes into making them. Also I've contacted a few publishers asking them about translating more books from the German perspective; and the overall message was: interest in the era is falling, finding the owner can be difficult, and each book is a gamble as to whether they'll make a profit or not.
