- Bass fuzz might be one of the most fun things to experiment with when it comes to pedals. It's literally getting your amp to sound like it is broken, and placement of your fuzz pedal in the signal chain can make a massive difference to the sound.
This is not the origins of fuzz. That video, thankfully for all of us, has already been made by the deeply knowledgeable and hilariously funny Josh Scott of JHS Pedals. The video is linked below, and I highly recommend checking it out.
I'm here to give you some options for bass, to take a look at signal chain setups, and to see the incredible difference between just four of my favorite fuzzes for bass. We look at two vintage pieces: The Big Muff by EXH/Sovtek, and the Maestro MFZ-1 from 1976, and then two slightly more modern examples the Woolly Mammoth by Zvex, and the Bass BB Preamp by Xotic.
Everything I used in the video, where possible, is linked here. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up, and leave me a comment below!

I've been writing with fuzz + bass rather than clean bass + fuzz guitar since the start of quarantine. Fuzz on bass is pretty new for me, so working with a new sound + restricting my options has opened a new window of creativity. Thanks again for the strong content! I'm really enjoying this pedal series.
Ok, I’m a “purest” and never use effects... but... I’m shook! This video has opened my eyes/ears to a whole new world. Subscribed now. Thanks and cheers!
One of the best things of eletric instruments (bass and guitar) is how you can shape the signal in crazy ways, don't miss out on this! I'd would recommend you buy some unit with plenty of basic effects to start experimenting with it. Once you enter the world of fx there's no coming back. Bass with fuzz is definetly a one way street
Hey! That's awesome to hear. Welcome to the channel! Lots more weird and wonderful sounds coming your way. Also... I was exactly what you described for many years. I literally had messages posted everywhere anyone could find me online saying "don't ask me gear questions cos I don't own any, and don't know the answer". Now.... not so much!
Thank the Bass Lords for your new pedal show on bass gear. I can't wait to see more videos like this Janek!
You're kinda like the Josh Scott for us bassists, much respect sir
I do have this MUFF as well... I've been playing thru the reissues of the Ram's Head and the Orange Pi Muff's they sound incredible... I should scoop up the GREEN reissue as well. LOVE your vid's Janek!
Bass fuzz, door stop, and car ramp all in one?!? I’m in.
Digging your outsider intro to fuzz bass, with that sick synth sound. I got a Korg Toneworks G5 from Japan recently and find it ADDICTIVE. Why play normal?
Finally the return of the 4 string triple P!!!! Man,the combination of these pedals are Killer!!!! This video make me jump and headbanging a lot!!!!
The triple P rules! Was the perfect bass to do this video with. Thumbs up on the headbanging!
Wooly mammoth with OC2 is a great combination!
Those zvex pedals are no joke! I had fuzz factory ... not too much for bass but the things it was doing to sound are hard to explain ...
Fuzz Factory can be great on bass too... but yeah, they are super crazy pedals, and I love every bit of them!
Boss OC-2 just arrived and I spent two days playing around having loads of fun... but also ended up thinking “huh... I think I want some fuzz on top of it”. And CZcams just sends me this :)
I think the muff-based fuzz is better for rock and metal and the Wooly mammoth is better for synth bass sounds. I also find that clean blending a little with the muff tricks the ear to make it sound more gated.
bought my Malekko Omicron Fuzz because of an appearance you did for Pedals & Effects, still one of my favorite fuzzes
nice! love that pedal. Used it a lot on the road.
IMO the best bass fuzzes are: Wooly Mammoth and Fuzz War !
that jungle beat and bass line for it are crazy! :)
that outro jam is so sick
Janek, homie lol how are ya brotha hope you and the family are doing great. Ok so for pedals like your Maestro, you know they have a “9vdc “ type cable except it has the 9v battery connector as a tip so that you can take pedals that don’t have DC jacks, and plug them into whichever power supply you use. So it’s basically 3.5mm on one end for the power supply and the top of a 9v battery on the other end that goes to the battery clip inside your pedal. They’re also great for old DOD’s when you don’t have the usual 3.5. Been using em literally for almost 20 years now lol check em out brotha and take care of yourself
Speaking of DOD 250, check out the Grey Matter by Loophole Pedals. It's two 250s in one, with some extra tweakability.
Well holy crap!!! that sounds like a lot of fun. I'll definitely check it out.
So Janek, the Xerograph is after or before the fuzz??
OC2 -> fuzz -> xerograph -> modulation , right ?
Janek talk about the distortion pedals to play guitar solos on bass pls
I think it's probably a wise thing to do to either play guitar, or hire a guitar player if you're looking for a distorted guitar solo. I've experimented a lot with higher pitches, and double octave ups on the bass, but it's never been in search of emulating a shredding distorted guitar solo
@crash89 get a guitar pedal that cuts out some low end if it's just for solos
Not gonna lie seeing you channel your inner Royal Blood with those first few fuzz riffs had me shocked and amazed 😂
Mike Kerr!! love his sound.
Great show
The copilot orbit is a beast for synth-esque jams. Also malekko b:assmaster is a must have.
Hi Janek, love the show!
I would recommend you to check out the Grombass by OnkartGromt, really cool distortion/fuzz pedal made in Norway.
with a name like that, how could I not...?
Hi Janek, big fan of the chanel, you were the one who inspired me to experiment with synth bass pedals. Question here, do you use some kind of cabinet simulation in this video or is it just dry bass going through di?
7:49 - WOW ____THIS sound!
So many people accuse me of being a frustrated guitarist because I play up the dusty end of the neck a lot, and have been known to play a solo or two once in a while. I would definitely argue that that could not be further from the truth, and I am in fact a bigger fan of modular synths. That's what I was going for here with that sound, and the exploration will continue.
@@janekgwizdala I would encourage you explore, there is no need not too! Your chops are inspirational and what you're yanking out of these pedals blows me away. LOVE it! I bought the freaking woolly mammoth right after this.
Hey Janek, I've been following your stuff since 2012/2013 or so when I discovered Theatre by the Sea. Always inspiring content, bravo!
I was wondering what drum loops you use for your videos? Are they "out of the can" or do you program them yourself? I am looking for a solution to practice my creativity and I struggle creating beats/grooves.
The first four musical examples, that all have the same bass lines, use drum loops from The Loop Loft. And the performance at the end of the video use drums from a session I was producing many years ago with Jojo Mayer.
I love the new Pedal series Janek! Would love to see a video on Loopers! Also do you have a Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water? I think you would do some wild stuff with one. Its one of my favorite pedals!
Dude! Loved seeing you getting pretty rocky. Sounded cool and different than what at least I am used to hearing from you. Very cool change. Do you have any big rock/metal influences?
Soooo many... I was checking out a little Chris Wolstenholme from Muse before I was making this video for some modern fuzz... but I love Mike Watt, Justin Meldal-Jonsen, Juan Alderete, Jonathan Hischke... there are so many great players out there that use fuzz, it's impossible to name all the ones I love.
@@janekgwizdala totally some monster players. JMJ and Juan have been big influences on me. I started out as a metal kid in the 90's and the melodic Jason Newsted bass solos had me hooked on bass. When I was 20 I discovered Jaco, and watched an amazing player named Simon Fisk within a matter of days and totally sent me into a rabbit hole.
Janek, have you tried any Beetronics pedals? I'm guessing a Royal Jelly would probably work well.
I really hope you will get to the bugcrusher soon! I would love some more information and samples of it
Zvex Fuzzolo is another good fuzz. Totally out of control!
great as always...
do yo use the Boss LS2?
Hey, Janek,
first up, I know I'm a little late to the party, but thank you for uploading this! Really a great demo of all those fuzzes!
Secondly, I have a Woolly Mammoth here and I never really got it to work all that well for me. It seems to really dislike active basses and other pedals in front of it. but it also might just be my inability to fully understand how to make it sound great, as clearly it sounds just massive, when you use it with your OC-2 before it etc. Any tipps on how to really get this to work great?
Cheers!
Maestro MFZ-1 is a great tone distorter! Have you heard of anyone trying to clone it?
Wow production on these is so good, are these getting syndicated or something?? Great format and feels very well polished, hope it kicks off mate!
nice intro janek
Is it possible to DI into a DAW and use software to generate similar effects?
I really want to see what you would create with the Enzo Meris and an expression pedal!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as a French speaker I approve of a soupçon
🇫🇷💪
Did the offer end already?
Check out the Red Ripper from Tech 21
This sounds awesome! One question, in your chain you’re placing the fue Fuzz before or after the Xerograph?
The BB preamp is not a fuzz. Maybe an overdrive/distortion.
I really love my KMA pedals with bass. They have the needed blend and better EQs than most with their Chief Disruptor (muff) and Guardian of the Wurm (rat). Also the death by audio Fuzz War and jptr fx Add Violence.
Have you messed with the EQD Hoof?
I have not, but will definitely give it a listen when I have a chance.
Janek Gwizdala my guess...it will be similar to something already in your possession. So fun to experiment!
Iron Ether Oxide
1:30 Why do you use Pitchcorrect on your voice?
I don't....
it's proper russian language on this pedals tovarisch Janek )
what's pedal for czcams.com/video/rLH1Ykynh_Y/video.html ? thanks
How ca. You compare fuzz or distortion than can’t be compared..? This is a no sence
why everybody thinks that talking its more interesting than instrument sound((((
Wooly Mammoth sounds really artificial on the fuzz tone. The Big Muff and the one right after it sounded much better.
the mammoth has a huge range. most people dime the “wool” knob and it ends up sounding a bit much. I don’t set the pinch/wool knobs past 9 o’clock and have always been satisfied. YMMV
Love it!!!... About the Green Russian, I quite like the modern version, too: just saying...
Probably a very personal thing right? I'm not a huge fan of the new stuff, but I definitely appreciate pedals that aren't fragile, have 9v options, and don't cost over $500 for a good example...
Janek Gwizdala Good points: I feel the same way!!!...
