    Years ago, I was talking to a stranger at a dinner party and told him that I was going to write a book. Generally, that remark gets oooo's and ahhhhhh's from people. But this guy just said "And how long have you been planning to write this book?" I told him I'd been collecting information and ideas for the last 20 years, and he said "Forget it. You're obviously not going to write it." This shook me up enough to tickle my "I'll-show-you bone". I sent this man my first 4 published books. The next three I didn't bother. If he hadn't rattled my chain, I would probably still be just talking about it.😂😂

      I used to be exactly the same, in fact I would spend ages making notes either about the idea or to try and think one up, and not actually do the work because I was too busy fine-tuning the ideas, or researching them. Once I started showing up at my desk every day (even if I was in a really flat mood and only felt capable of doing a quick scribble) I started to detach from that mindset gradually. I think it might be connected to perfectionism, as I just started doing a new thing of painting but allowing myself to do bad work, in fact encouraging myself to do bad work, and finally I feel like I'm getting some traction, and I can paint freely and enjoy it. Ideas are coming from the work I've done rather than from my thinking, which always resulted in disappointment as I would spend hours trying to have the perfect idea only to find when I started the project, it didn't work. So I think this video is bang on and I wish you lots of luck with trying out just showing up and doing something, it really works!

      So true. I also believe the “muse” or “energy” or whatever you call it will find who’s working. There’s a crazy phenomenon on this (forget what it’s called) but there’s an example of two authors one of which didn’t act on an idea for a book, and their good friend and colleague who they connected with one a year or so, knowing nothing about the book idea, started writing that very book. For me, showing up every day is about building a relationship with my inner artist, others may call this the muse or the diamon. We are in service to this source of creativity & imagination and we have to make sacrifices of our time & energy in dedication to this deity. If we commit to this relationship, hold a space to reach out, listen & trust it will lead us to who we actually are, what our art is about, to our authentic voice and style. Your ego, your mind, what you think isn’t your art, it is something deeper & showing up, being patient & developing a daily practice is the only way to have something that truly expresses your soul. It’s why I stand firm in, “create something every day”. Doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, doesn’t have to be world changing, doesn’t even have to be finished. But greasing that creative groove is powerful. As a teacher, you give a lot. Try giving to yourself first. Maybe it’s 5 min sketch during your morning coffee. I’m happy to have helped, Michael! The hardest part is starting (anything). Once you get going it’s so much easier to keep that inertia and continue pace. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but consistency (in anything) never is. Overtime that consistency compounds, and that’s where the magic happens. Plus, sometimes 5minutes = 3 hours! Happy creating!

Another thing I do is reach for my least used/favourite medium and then choose a random page in my sketchbook so if it’s terrible it’s tucked away in the sketchbook. • @Seamannon
      @Seamannon Před 2 měsíci +2

      Marketing is often about relatability and art is about emotional resonance too on the side of the consumer. Maybe you've put yourself in the wrong places and before people if you weren't received in a positive way?
      What are your books about? Who are they really for? Who can resonate with the stories? What can they learn from it? Who can benefit from what you have to give and how? These are important questions to ask, so you can focus on your particular niche instead of relying on some marketing "specialist" to bring in customers. Many of those "specialists or "art managers" will just take your money without delivering any results they promise and then even blame you for the results and call your art crap. Neurotypicals don't relate well with neurodivergent peole and their struggles, there is usually a clash in communication when they're forced to work together. Keep that in mind.
      It's better to build things up from scratch when you are personally engaged in the process, because you know your message best and you care about it most and you have to care about the people who become your first supporters too. You have to learn how to serve them best without compromising on your values, you have to discover that middle ground because no one else with care about it more and it has to be personal. You have to learn how to take feedback and how to ignore nonconstructive comments. You can call in advisors and other specialists when you are at the stage where you know your core products and when you have enough discernment to reject incompatible "help".
      Best of luck to you! May you find the best path to express yourself and relate to others! ;)
      PS: I believe the video was about creating art and expressing yourself, not as much about selling it - that's a different problem. Developing your skill vs monetizing it. You just admitted that you have everything you need to create your art, because you've already created it. Now you have to figure out who can receive it - that's the next level of the journey.

    We don't have to get upset if we miss a day here and there, but overall, I think it's a great idea!
    I am 66 years old. I have liked to draw since I can remember.
    I kept myself from doing it quite a bit, but would draw something here and there.
    I wanted to paint, I was afraid. I think I expect too much.
    I am getting over that, and have been increasing my output lately.
    It is hard to see day to day, but thinking back over the last two years or so, I can see improvement.
    I have probably drawn 50 or so drawings in the last 2 years, and a few back in 2021.
    I have not done that in 50 years.
    I am gaining momentum.
    I like your idea of drawing something, or painting something each day!!!
    I have painted 7 or so paintings in the last couple of years.
    I am gaining momentum in painting too.
    More and more, like a snowball rolling down a hill!
    I work 2 or 3 days a week, and help my wife take care of our sheep.
    I do keep busy these days - I get my rest, but when I am not resting, I am finding more and more that I like to get something done, and / or be creative.

    I've definitely spent the last few years having fallen into the trap of focussing too much on the end product. It's fine to do that when it's something like a comic I'd like to publish or if it's a commission, the product is part of that process. But for the casual stuff like doodling in sketchbooks or just experimenting with different mediums or styles, I'm getting better at focussing more on enjoying what I'm doing rather than focussing only on what I'm creating.
    I find it far more gratifying to do a terrible 5-minute doodle over doing nothing at all :)

      You make a really great point! I too love the terrible, quick doodles. They are just so much fun

    Thanks. Agreed with general idea. Just about the 'everyday' thing - isn't that a road to burnout? The people who can do that everyday might just be built different from someone like me..

    • @GinnyStLawrence
      @GinnyStLawrence  Před měsícem +2

      Depends on what your everyday looks like.. in this video I describe 5 minutes a day. That (to me) doesn’t lead to burnout. I brush my teeth every day, twice a day. Do I always want to? Not really. But it takes 5 minutes and I feel better afterwards.
      I think some people see “make art everyday” and it triggers them deeply. That’s not the intention of this video or my message. What I hope to leave people with is: go make something… work towards your creative expression everyday for at least 5 minutes a day. Simple doodle, cleaning brushes, etc. 5 minutes. Even if you sit there and draw circles over and over and over.. it’s 5 minutes.

      @@GinnyStLawrence I can TOTALLY agree with this. The 5 minutes wasn't clear to me. Thank you for this personal response and elaboration. And I can totally get on board with 5 minutes of art expression a day ^^

    making art, no matter what, is the perfect stress buster. Make yourself laugh at your crappy art. You’ll feel better and make art, your mood will improve as will your art with time. ❤ thanks for the great supportive message ❤ 🇨🇦

    Thankyou! What I needed, when I needed it. I also love that that Gibson quote and it’s so true…when you just let yourself sit down with your creative outlet eventually you get lost in the zone.
