TRINCOMALEE, SRI LANKA - From Batticaloa, we continued our trip in Sri Lanka up the coast to Trincomalee, a wonderful town known for its beaches, seafood, and lagoons. Some of the best crabs in Sri Lanka come from Trincomalee. Much of the culture and people of Trincomalee are Tamil, and the food and culture reflects that.
King of Crabs - First we went to visit the main crab dealer of Trincomalee where he pulled out some fresh crabs from the lagoon. We ended up buying 3 KG of crab - 5,500 LKR ($30.68) to bring back to the house to cook.
At the house, the family had already prepared a selection of Sri Lankan Tamil food dishes, that were vibrant and ready to be eaten, but they immediately got started cooking the crab. The crab cooking was simple, but heavily relied on their own family blend of masala spice mixture.
All the dishes were served over a banana leaf plate, each with its own color and vibrancy. It was an incredible meal, so much delicious food and such a variety. I loved it. It was a perfect was to spend a day learning about Sri Lankan Tamil food in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankans are the *nicest* people I've met. I recall an instance in Toronto Canada when I walked to an eatery joint quite late in the night. The owner was about to pull the shutter down. Seeing me he was ready to pack me a meal with whatever he had left - and the option of ordering dishes of my choice was ruled out, obviously. My then 3 year old daughter just asked me if she could get dosa (a crispy pancake like delicacy). The owner just overheard her request and while I was trying to talk her into why she can't have her choice at that point in time, he simply told me: "No sir, I'll make it for your child. I can't turn down a kid's ask". A man who was about to wind up his business for the day went back and prepared a few dosas for us!
I've had many more instances after that. Very nice people and this video is another example of their hospitality!

I absolutely love the people of Sri Lanka. My visit there was incredible. I worked in the Maldives and spent a week there. It was a great adventure from the moment I stepped off the plane until I arrived back at the airport in Colombo. ❤️

I remember the first time I had Tamil food. It was like a flavour explosion in my mouth. The thing that caught me by surprise was a sweet and sour resume which makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Hi Mark, thanks for visiting to the Tamil areas. still you need to explore Jaffna city. that is the Heart of Tamil peoples land. there are may places that you can visit and enjoy our Tamil cultural foods and many Tamil cultural places. When you have visited last time like in 2010 i believe, you went to the wrong direction which you have visited the island and just the Jaffna town (near the bus stop) but, if you travel further north you can visit much nicer places. I hope one day you will visit Jaffna and will have a wonderful time. the reason is our Tamil people are all over the world and we know all of the culture and their food styles.
