Cabbage Patch Kids phenomenon hits San Diego stores ahead of Christmas 1983

Cabbage Patch Kids dolls were disappearing from shelves in San Diego and across the country ahead of Christmas 1983. News 8's Liz Pursell reported on the phenomenon in late November.
Footage from stores around the United States showed toy shoppers fighting, crying and stampeding for the dolls with the signature yarn hair.
San Diego stores didn't have any riots over the toys but were sold out and had to disappoint callers and visitors to their shops. The toymaker Coleco was trying to increase production but no new dolls were expected until 1984.

In 83 my mom couldn’t find any for me so she got me the next best thing,the Doll Baby. I loved her very much. I Finally got a real one the next year

they got all kinds. different skin tones. from light to real dark. but the molds of the face are the same. just the color of the plastic and cloth are different. but they got light skin to the darkest skin color of any human. the one time it changes. is the asian dolls do have different eyes. and hair. i have 30 or so cabbage patch kids

I was 7 when this happened, I couldn’t stand those things, the jingle to the commercials annoyed the hell out of me.
