- The 1987 animated version of Gaston Leroux's "The Phantom of the Opera" with some instrumental embellishments from Andrew Lloyd Weber's acclaimed musical. Several of the instrumental versions came from the very talented Erika Lopez: • Overture
I was feeling nostalgic and put this video together this just for fun, but I was happy to see how it turned out. I thought the finale as well as minutes 13:15 - 14:30 worked pretty well. Hope you enjoy! - Krátké a kreslené filmy
The budget for this cartoon be like
60% backgrounds
35% voice acting and musical direction
5% animation
I love how the live action movie and the broadway play versions are all romantic and spicy but this version just makes me want to give Christie a can of mace or a whistle or something
Raoul looks like Mandrake! And Christine acts like a b***h to that poor Erik
@@gloriabarberi1292 right?
This version is an acid trip
🤣
ye is pretty wild. also I think the closest adaptation to the actual book iirc
Truer words have never been spoken.
I had never known that a cartoon version existed.
Indeed. It was a low budget animation made for "kids", and skips through the story, but it's also the most accurate adaptation to the book in existence. "Phantom" really needs Universal to revive the story apart from Webber's musical and do a more faithful telling of the story; it deserves that kind of pop culture spread.
Emerald City was the animation group behind this. They also adapted Oliver Twist and Les Miserables. Curiously, I don't think they ever made an Oz film, though by their name they may have been hopeful.
Me neither
@@PurpleLugia maybe but we like to keep it’s not like the Leonardo version of R+J which was a pop culture one.
Yeahp, if this was Disney Christine would make an excellent disney princess, erik would make a phenomenal disney villain
I know he's supposed to be all horrible and scary and stuff, but I can't help but giggle every time Erik unmasked appears on screen. He's so cartoony! And he kinda looks like the Hatbox Ghost from The Haunted Mansion whenever he gets that cheeky grin. He was definitely intimidating at the beginning, though.
Unmasked Erik looks like a Scooby Doo villain, which is ironic that most monsters turned out to be humans hidden inside their masks, yet Erik looks horrifying the moment his mask is off.
This is much closer to the book than the Andrew lloyd Webber version. Not that it’s not as entertaining, but it’s not as faithful or chronologically easy to follow as this one.
Agreed.
yes! It very much reminds me of the silent (1925) Phantom of the Opera movie! :D
The Andrew Lloyd music is actually used here.
The music is extremely well timed. I love it. I think Erik’s eyes’s are one of the most creepy things I’ve seen
I know what u mean like his eyes stiars in to my soul
I won't lie - Erik asking Christine to choose between the Grasshopper and the Scorpion while Raoul and the Persian stand trapped behind the glass reminds me of a Wheel of Fortune setup.
That's is the silent movie.
I love how Raoul laughs without smiling 😀
"What about Madame Carlotta?" Raoul asks
Christine giggles coyly
....
.....
Raoul gives a relieved laugh, "Of course! You're joking."
Is... is she gonna kill her?
I own this on video tape and the ALW music here is an overlay. It’s not the original music from the cartoon, but I will say it’s an improvement.
Okay but that fucking organ blast when Erik starts tearing the sewers down with his magnum opus... The music is perfect and almost in sync with movements of his fingers
Thanks! I thought it worked pretty well with the ALW soundtrack. It's a great score!

As a toddler this is what my family would play for me…. I was 2 years old.
80s babies are built different
80's and 90's babies had spines and thicker skin
Y’all forget that they didn’t add the part where Raoul is going to sleep and Erik is watching him from the window and Raoul shoots at the eyes and it just grazes Erik and he bleeds and his brother tells him it was just a cat! Nothing to worry about …but he had no idea Erik was trying to get rid of Raoul before he took her up North.
Ive always loved the Phantom story, and always rooted for Erik, but now, watching it as an adult, i can see how horribly toxic his relationship with Christine was.
He was also a pedophile 👀
Yes
It was extremely toxic- However I like to think back to the one quote he established that because of humanity's hatred towards him, that was established him AS the Phantom. Had he was treated and raised under better circumstances which was likely not gonna be a thing itmsould have been different, but he was a tortured soul- not justifying his actions but considering that in this version he realized he was in a wrong in what he did and let her go free it is heartbreaking.
Thats cos other versions always make erik handsome this one is ugly and true to the book
🙄
Watching this again. I feel bad for the Phantom. He was rejected by the world and driven into madness in the darkness. If anything, I would truly fall in love with him even if it meant that I could help him redeem his soul.
Erm…..
He’s a narcissist Ahole
He wanted to kidnap Christine and he emotionally abused her.
Also Both the original book and ALW version have it where the phantom is old enough to be Christine’s father.
In the original the phantom was 50 years old.
And Both the original and ALW’s, Christine was only 16.
So really the phantom was a pedophile.
However I too feel bad for the phantom, he was always a outcast and was shamed and used in a circus freak show as a boy, people where always afraid of him, so, he was always alone and never knew what love was
he obviously has a great mental disorder from all of this .
But at the same time that doesn’t excuse his actions.
I can’t feel bad for him at all, and frankly, I hoped he lived a terrible rest of his life.
the fact that we feel bad for the phantom even though he was a absolute monster goes to show how well written this was.
This is why TPOTO is my top favorite.
It's like Christine said, he was just looking for someone to love him . . .poor Eric
Poor Erik! He’s been ridiculed all his life, just because of his facial deformity. And now takes out his anger by murdering people, to protect himself against more ridicule and mockery. And therefore, more physical and emotional pain.
he's just a baby girl
Love how Erik says promises are for fools and pretty much calls Christine who has been forcing to make promises a fool.
19:51 okaaaay this guy is a bit weird
IKR but seriously you can't blame him
Yes. How life treated him was wrong but it doesn’t justify anything he does in this movie even if it is out of love.
She did grimace. 🤷♀️
I feel like this was more the original story than Webber’s because at the end Raoul gets trapped in a torture room and Christine agrees to marry to save the him. The phantom can then tell she’s doing it for Raoul and lets her go.
I LOVE The Phantom Of The Opera! And this is my first time watching this. Love that you put the music in there. When The Phantom Of The Opera started playing I said “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW YEAH!” because it’s one of my favorite songs from there other than the overture.
This was ANIMATED!? THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE
Phantom of the opera is so awesome i just love it
"My own father never saw me." UMmmm hitting reeeal close to home with THAT line my friend Eric!!! I was disowned in September and I too had to wear a mask!! I know exactly what that feels like! HA ha ha! This version is hilarious and I love it! 💖

Also Eric buddy, this is not how consent works.. In fact this movie is the opposite of consensual courtship. ☹️
"For the first time, a living woman kissed me and did not die." WHAT
"This movie is the opposite of consensual courtship" That's the point of the book. Erik lets Christine go because he realizes what he has with her isn't healthy, and that Christine deserves real love.
Too many modern adaptions don't understand the book at all.
@@PyroGothNerd Yes. It's kind of like GlaDOS letting Chell go in Portal 2. As soon as you can see the monster you've become, then suddenly the illusion of justified cruelty becomes conscious, and a villain is forced to reflect on their true motives.. 💙
Based off context clues and my own personal experience I believe you and I have gone through the same thing. Needless to say I feel for you and know your pain.
@@christopherorta8755 Thank you! I am in the process of recovery and facing my fears. 2022 has been the most excruciatingly painful but also the most important year of my life! Like a Phoenix I am reborn, and like a phantom I am un dying. But like a shadow I am integrating. Stories are the life blood of the universe. My own is at last within my own control. Me all the movie: Dammit Raoul shut up an listen her! 🤣🤣The soundtrack really high the story to another level 💖💖thanks you for sharing
:'C My poor Erik, here, in the book, in the miniseries, in the other movies and musicals, the poor always ends badly.

That's the point. Erik is a tragic character but at the same time thanks to his crimes he does not deserve to "end with the girl" we could say that his ending is good and sad. He realizes that Christine loves Raoul and for the first time he does an act for love and a very big one, letting her go, putting her before his desires
@@maggieaishalee3829 True. Tbh is kinda sad when i see ppl be too cruel with Erik..like yes he did some bad things, but did he ever actually know a better way?
Like...i dont get why ppl think he groomed Christine..she was actually 20 in the book, not 16 like someone thinks, and Leroux himself say that, before the 6 months where Erik teach her how to sing, they never interact...
The book talk about redemption, of a man who desperately screamed to be helped...and Christine realizes it, and despite everything that has happened, she offers him all her affection...of course, affection is not a synonym of love... Erik understands it very well that's why he lets her go.
The way Raoul looks and dresses at the climax and end reminds me of Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid, minus the mustache.
You've done a really great job with this video. The cartoon and the music from the musical work great together.
I owned a vhs copy of this animated version and I adored it! Mind you I always hated the bit where he kills the cat and the scene where he breaks that man's wrist at the masked ball scared me, but otherwise it was my most watched vhs! I love the creativity of syncing ALW's musical score to this!
Honestly the voice actor who played Erik in this did a pretty good job imo.
29 minutes and 7 seconds in was anyone else disappointed to not hear the famous quote "behold, she is singing to bring down the Chandler"? I mean granted normally it is colotta who sings to bring it down none the less it falls and the Line is not spoken and that makes me sad
We had a VHS copy of this when I was a kid. What a nostalgia trip.
This was really cool! Thanks for posting!
What a GREAT animation! I LOVE it! Thank you!!
I’m a huge Phantom Phan! And, I love Erik, aka, The Phantom of The Opera very much!

I love the combining of the two!
I love this Animated Film Version of The Phantom Of The Opera!! ♡♡
Erik/The Phantom Of The Opera in this Film reminds me of The Hatbox Ghost and Ezra The Hitchhiking Ghost from Disney's The Haunted Mansion
Andrew Lloyd Webber's Musics were really perfect in this Film
I love The Phantom Of The Opera 1925 Movie/1943 Movie/1986 Musical/2004 Movie/2011 Musical
One of my favorite Musicals/Movies of all time
Amazing
I remember seeing it when I was a child! Many years later, I read the original novel by Gaston Leblanc, I was amazed to see how this version is the most accurate to the book (just to say, forget the “romantic plot” from the other versions)
Yeah this is sooooo awesome
All I could focus on was the cat death. Erik why??? I never read the book so I don't know if he had a vendetta against cats but I don't need that in an animated cartoon! It did all that hard work to climb up that ladder, I thought the cat was going to be working with him.
Thanks for this!!!
Rats are clean, super intelligent and gentle little souls with big Personalities!💞
First time seeing this version. When I was a little child I loved the phantom of the opera, I felt that the music, it spoke to my very spirit, the essence of my being. Then when I grew up into a man, I eventually realized why that is. Being a disabled trans man is exactly like being the phantom of the opera for me. To live in secrecy for many many years, alone, with only a black cruel mirror for company in spirit. But the scars behind my own mask are invisible to others, they don’t see what I can see. So when I met my own angel, my savior, Azreal my beloved angel of music and death, I vowed once and for all to never return to the life I knew before. And I became the mask. It’s not a secret anymore. Perhaps it is calass to share so openly my own phantoms now. I love his music. I love music.
I would hugging the Phantom.
This reminds me of my childhood. My grandma taped it, and I used to watch it when I would spend the night at my grandparent’s house. ❤
28:39 didn’t realize an early version of Beneath a Moonless Sky was around in 1987
I think it's from journey to the cemetery too in the 2004 movie! 🥰
La même musique que le film pour les miserables one day more
Fascinating. Very fascinating.
Ahhhh…..cartoons from the 80’s. I miss them. But anyhooooo….I had no idea that there was a cartoon! A splendid video with ALWs music included. In which I find myself singing and humming along
I love it
The art work for this is allover the place. Eric and Chirstine look like characters from Filmation's Zorro, Eric looks like a Scooby Doo Villain, and the Opera Crowd looks to be Rotoscoped in.
Merci beaucoup !
This animation is incredible i cried for the Phantom There is a bit of him in most people very relatable at least id like to believe so
This I used to watch when I was younger used to freak me out but I watched it multiple times 🙈
I love the bird's-eye view of Paris in the beginning. A bustling city with lights, people, horses, carriages, boats on the river... And the only thing moving is a flag.
Very good
Erik is so many Red flags 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
So is Raoul too in my opinion. The only Raoul that i like is the one on the book...yk there he actually accept the idea that Christine may love someone else.
In the movie he gives the "Christine love me Erik gne gne" vibes, and he actually show to have some jelous iusses too...who is wrost? In my opinion Raoul. Why? Cuz Erik did not know or had a better life, Raoul did.
Ok i change my mind on book Raoul too...why? Oh well, because someone remaind me that he threatened to leave and go to Antarctica if Christine didn't get him back. Geez Raoul... you are a living red flag my friend.
@@rachelemassoli6804 yeah but Erik is a Murderer and Raoul is not and wants good things for Christine for her to be safe from someone dangerous. Erik puts Christine’s life in jeopardy on purpose making her choose the scorpion or the grasshopper. Yes Erik doesn’t know better but it doesn’t mean he’s a better choice…he belongs in a mental institution or jail. Raoul had put so much trust in Christine who didn’t want to leave right then because Christine knew that no matter where she went Erik would find her. But they both didn’t expect him to kidnap her on stage. Even the Persian (Nadir) knew that Erik is evil and helped Raoul to save Christine from being another victim of his violence. Raoul isn’t perfect but he’s got better love for Christine that Erik has…Erik is just mad that his mother didn’t love him so he’s making Christine replace her.
@@brooke3312 eh i kinda feel like Erik was actually more deep... i totally agree with you when you said that we can not justy his crimes, but we can not just say "he acted like this only because his mother did not love him". His mother litteraly sold her child to circus, place where he was phisically and mentally abused (the persian say so to Raoul in the book...he also said that Erik actually save the persian life once, this is why, even if he does not support him, he kinda start to care for Erik).
Also the book talk about a tormented man screaming out his soul for help...and Christine did notice it...this is why she still pity him util the end...and Erik also got reedem and find his pace againts his hinner demons...
Tbh, i feel like Christine should end up alone, not because she does not deserve love, but because as i said, Raoul have some serious jelous iusses too...better alone and happy that with someone too possesive, if u got my point.
@@brooke3312 story like this can end just in 3 ways:
1)Like Erik u know just violence, u pretend to get things by force and it ends with u doing terrible life choise that destroy u and the persons around you
2) With suicide. I know, end this way is just tragic, no one deserve it but...not all people are strong enough to handle all this pain.
3)With the victim who still good anyway. I feel like Erik wanted with all his heart to end like this, but..he just does not know how show himself without violence...this is why his story is tragic..
😳did anyone else notice that the see through mirror is directly adjacent to her room divider?
The stuff ive seen on the robert englund version of poto would be enough to give most people nightmares for the rest of their lives
Was this a Hanna and Babera production? Looks very similar to the Scooby Doo art style.
It wol'd be much better, if this cartoon had not just music from Webber, but a songs too. However, black rat on the red ton from boyler looks really cool.
My music teacher showed us this movie when I was in first grade and it freaked me out
your music teacher was awesome
The thumbnail made me think it was a game
it's hilarious how the backgrounds are amazing but then the actual animation is... um... a little less than stellar
why is it that this goofy film is one of the few ones that actually includes daroga 😭
17:00 "Did you have a nice walk?" Not from the original book or any adaptation but so incredibly Erik.
Did he just KILL THE CAT
WTF
Was kinda hoping for some originality in the unmasking scene, but the animators just ripped off Lon Chaney here.
Poor Erik
I like how this version is far more true to the novel. The musical is brilliant but lacks the stronger element of darkness that is in the novel
Nooooo! Erik would NEVER kill a cat!
Erik tortured people for the entertainment of the Shah's daughter in Persia, tormented them to the point of suicide, and was a master of strangling people to death. What in the name of God's green kitty Samael makes you think he's not going to kill a cat?
@@finncullenwell he treated the white horse (Cesar) pretty well, and in general leroux never tell us that he have never been cruel with a animal. In susan kay version he had a dog and he adopted a cat. Tbh i see erik as ''animals are better than humans'' in almost all the versions..
@@finncullenalso, i think you forget to say that in persia he was kinda forced to do what he was doing (the shah would have sure killed him if he refused his orders). Daroga himself said that he was not happy about the job that was given to Erik at the shah court, cuz he tough they were wasting his true talents..
C'mon Erik..did you really have to kill the cat?
Yes really Erik why why...
If you watch closely at the end you can see the phantom running out of the rubble to safety....
Just like in the movie, where Erik smashes open the mirror, and escapes out into the streets of Paris.
Raoul is so immature
I have this at my dance class
I thought the red cat was the Phantom's demon cat, poor kitty haha.
I don’t know why, but the close up shots of the characters gets me unsettled every time. Like, can we not do that, please. Other than that, this was a very entertaining version of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, despite this version seems quite obscure.
The stuff in this version is tame as a simpsons episode in comparison
Why does every adaptation insist on making Christine a brunette? She is clearly identified in the novel as being blonde.
Aside from that (and the cat) this is the most faithful adaptation of the book and ALWs music works well.
I love the phantom of the opera!!! because it’s a very beautiful love story
