- We say goodbye to the gadgets and software that met their end in 2022 - including some we thought were long dead, like Internet Explorer and BlackBerry. This year’s roundup includes tech from Google and Apple, but CNET’s Bridget Carey is having a hard time with how Amazon is killing the Glow.

this video has 2014-2013 youtube energy for some reason. i love it.
I never heard of the Glow until now. Amazon really dropped the ball with not marketing it better. I love the advances in technology but I'm also weary of where it's going. Companies don't want us to own anything. We're spending hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars on stuff that can become obsolete at any moment. That's not cool in my opinion
Did you see the size of the monolith? I think if it was slimmer and you could store it away easier, it might have survived.
Same thing with digital content stored online on a site, you don't have any equity for your money, and if/when the site fails, you lose it all with NO recourse. It's quite the scam!!
As the old saying goes. You will not own anything and you will be happy.
@@TheTechnicalRecruiterou are now effectively only owning a _license_ to use it.
If you are mad about them bricking the glow, just send Amazon a message 'Hey how's Rings of Power doing?'
Glow was a great product. I was on the fence about buying it for connecting with grandparents and creating shared experiences from a distance for my daughter. But it never felt like Amazon fully believed in the product. I just stumbled across its existence, never having seen any press from Amazon or other tech websites…which was odd. Additionally, shortly after it came out, there were very few non-Amazon videos about it on CZcams…also odd.
Great concept, decent execution from what I can tell, just no follow through from Amazon. I feel like if they had believed in it, it could have succeeded. Most people didn’t know it even existed.
Look out for the scammer below dude! yeah it seems like a great idea, imagine being a teacher and putting your lesson plan on that for distance learning.
I've never heard about the Glow -- which is weird, it being an Amazon product. Not even a mention on their home page. At least they're giving you your money back.
Glow like her rudolf red 🤧
Yep, never heard of it
amazon glow being not marketed enough is an understatement. never heard about it and i work at a large electronics retail store
My Sling Box died in October of this year. (I was warned like 18 months ago)
Absolutely loved it and used it almost daily. Very sad for its end.
Yup, another great device/ tool that even after you bought it, stopped working after they shut off their servers. It was a great service, bummed to see it go too!
You forgot the Slingbox! This was one of my favorite devices. It connected directly to a cable box and allowed a user to watch a direct video feed from their cable box to their phone or TV anywhere in the world. It allowed me to watch live stateside TV during my Japan trips. The network completely shut down in November. Obviously there are apps like CZcamsTV and SpectrumTV that have similar functionality now, but they are georestricted to the US and are built to block VPN connections. I’m very sad to see this one go 😢
I have had a version of the slingbox since 2005. Being able to watch the game while I am in the supermarket , in line at the DMV, etc., saved my sanity. I was really sad to see it go .
For me, the discontinuation of the iPod was, I thought a poor call on Apple‘s part. The reason being is that the iPod can make a nice back up in case your phone dies and you still need to send mail or other things. Making phone calls would probably be a problem with your phone by having that for Backup important things…
The thing is you can buy a supported iphone for less than an ipod touch
The iPod Touch was the gateway for me to buying an iPhone. Apple has lost that bridge for many adopters.
@@larrylarrington9229 that is very true but there are times when you don’t need the phone functionality or can’t have it because of work. This is where it’s nice to have a little package that does everything else and allows you to stay in touch with friends, family and whomever.
@@videobiker9131 just don't put a sim card in the iphone
@@videobiker9131 there’s not enough people with those specific circumstances for iPods to be as widespread as they were.
What a shame as your daughter made the best review ever for the Amazon product
Totally agree, if Amazon had used the footage of Bridget’s adorable daughter (with Bridget’s permission of course) in adverts for the device then it would have sold a lot more. It had loads of potential it’s a shame Amazon abandoned it.
R.I.P. Blackberry. 📱
We created a lot of memories together.
Crackberry, gone but not forgotten
Great video! I’ve noticed that apps I’ve paid for on my iPhone will suddenly be useless because they’re no longer in the App Store. The concept of buying something is surely changing as tech evolves. :(
Come over to android 😎
@@1mezion literally the same thing can happen on Android
@@RemixerUltimate do you have any idea how many app stores thare are for Android
@@1mezion do you have any idea how little that matters? If I buy an app from the Google Play Store, and that app gets shuttered, I can’t use that version of the app anymore. Could I potentially download it from one of the other app stores? Maybe, but that’s not guaranteed by any stretch of the imagination, considering just how many apps are exclusive to a single store. Along with that, even if it is available on another App Store, I probably still have to repurchase it.
Come on over to mobile Linux and phones that are as freedom respecting as a PC, when we’re ready that is. The phones and software aren’t ready for the typical person yet, but that’s being rectified.
I really miss the iPod line up😢😢
I used an ipod touch and oldschool nokia and it was the best combo ever.
I still have an original iPod Touch that I purchased on Boxing Day 2007 and it still works, though battery is starting to show its age.
The amazon glow was fantastic! I was so excited for my kids as well to play with grandparents from a distance. Even just fun games to play by themselves! I really hope someone else comes up with a concept close to this. It was so cool!
Wait a minute, I thought I was the giveaway winner?;)
I fired mine up after the first of the year, and some games still worked locally on the device, which made me hope that it wasn’t completely dead. I just tried it again, and not even the hard drive/fan will spin up. It’s almost like they played a kill code on there the last time it was on…:(
Blackberry is not dead , just OEM OS support. Not dead ...
Never even heard of the Amazon glow until now. Looks epic too
Thanks! For me it was automobile tech, specifically the 3G to 4G transition that “bricked” a lot of the car smarts for many people. The alternatives might be fine, but native capability is best for me when it comes to car tech.
I miss the proprietary OSs that car manufacturers used to have. They were well made with little bugs. Now they just run some cheap Android OS and fix the bugs “at a later date.”
Bridget n her daughter should team up n start their own CZcams tech review channel. It's fun watching them both together 👩👧
Bridget, “You” are the only “tech” that I would truly be sad to see retire! Your brand is just too iconically beautiful and smart❣️
Such a good example of how all this tech innovation led to new and expensive devices which we have less and less ownership of and eventually just contribute to landfill. We really need to tackle this, before it gets out of hand.
I was literally looking for this list from you all yesterday. Thank you!
glad to see stadia on there...but if we're being honest it was DOA back in 2019
I honestly liked Stadia .... as it was a way into gaming with out paying out big money for a console... and being a Gamer where I didn't have a vast amount of free time what with being a Father to small kids itwas nice to just open the app on my phone and play some Assassins creed was a nice thing
@@DavidNodenHooper the tech is awesome, and it has potential but GOOGLE is the last company that should have tried it. Nor is Amazon.
I loved Stadia. $14.99 a month got me 4K HDR games streamed exceptionally well and a ton of games added to my library over the years.
@The CunninLynguist I guess that's true now ... I don't have the money to pay out for an Xbox or PS5 or even have a computer strong enough for PC Gaming
@@DavidNodenHooper if anything, I think Valve could pull it off. They did have something similar before, Steam link. If they refined it and worked on it it would be the answer to stadia.
always love these breakdowns from Bridget... thankfully none of the departed has impacted my life so it's a good tech year for me :D
wow, the Glow wasn't even on my radar... it's a shame that they didn't have a way for the device to exist on its own without its cloud servers... hopefully someone else takes the idea & improves on it where you can store games on the device itself (heaven knows it's got room for it ;) )
Stadia shutting down hit me quite hard. It was the only way for me to play rdr2 on the go, as no other cloud gaming services had it. My PC won’t run it and I’m too poor a peasant to buy a new one.
I did not even know the Glow was a thing, and totally would have bought it for my nephew if I knew it existed
My daughter loves it, sucks it's gotta go
Thank You Bridget Carey. The "Tech that Died" segment is always worth looking forward to every year.
I am always glad to see you Bridget- not subbed but YT knew to suggest this to me. I almost bought that Glow thing, surprised it was so short lived, it was so cool! With all the layoffs I don't know if we'll see Amazon come out with too many new items like that anymore! Maybe up to other companies to do so!
I worked for Amazon developing hardware for 4 years until recently, and I had literally no idea the Glow existed 😮
Thank you for doing these! I watch it every year!
Amazon also stopped supporting the Amazon Cloud Cams. These were very simple to set up and use. They gave out replacement Blink cameras, but they are not quite as simple to use. They time out frequently and only one person at a time can view the camera images. Cloud cams were older, but just a bit better than the Blink.
I remembered owning an iPod touch in high school. Actually two, the first one was from January 2012 to December 2015 and the second was from December 2015 to December 2017 when I got my first smartphone.
I have never heard of Amazon glow but it seems like such a great idea.
They could have use it for remote office.
It would be great for architects to show drawings and explain them
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was vert useful and informative
The problem is that Amazon leadership is randomly shutting stuff, products like glow need lot of marketing , as well a lot of psychometric data to keep people using them, amazon doesn't get that part they are too data focused. Also i think company's direction is moving from B2C to more B2B products to make money
My favorite annual series!
Becoming quite the tradition, morbidly look forward to it.
Fun and informative video as always! 👏
Are the ipods ...the older ones still usable? Just dug one out of a box after we moved. Forgot I had it.
Rip sling box, the only way I watched local major league sports on the road.
One thing that you didn’t mention was sling box tv. It first came out back in 2005 I believe, and in November of 2022, they shut down the servers for it.
I disagree that Apple "killed" the iPod. They stopped making new ones, but there are still lots of iPods out there and they all continue to work.
I actually took the guts out of mine and replaced it with an SD card. It brought a brand-new life to the device!
Where I work, we still have legacy web applications that have only been tested to run on Internet Explorer.
I still miss Nokia. They use to make cool phones
And they're (or whoever behind the brand now) continuing!
I have a Nokia E71x in my box of dead tech. I loved that phone at the job I had at the time because it made it easy to program for the company PBX.
I had a Nokia 6160 back in the day
I liked LG’s weirdness
The Amazon glow would have been THE tool for zoom learning at the start of the pandemic. i feel it would have been much more engaging for the youngsters who were pulled away from their school friends at such a sensitive time in their lives.
SAVE THE GLOW! I've tried in vain but it's the single best product Amazon has ever made and keeps my family in connection with my niece and nephew without fear of exposing them to the wider internet. The glow is seriously so good, I can't believe they got rid of it. I'm on Amazon all day, and I wasn't aware of it till September and then it's gone? They can't say it didn't sell well, if they never modified it!
I love to see this every year!! Brings back memories
The main reason why 3G Was still operational was because a lot of older safety tech only operates on it like older cars on star or old people's fall detection systems also along of alarms I guess they figured if you have not upgraded by now you're never gonna do it
3G also travels greater distances. In rural areas where towers are not as close together you can pickup 3G where 4G is unavailable, it seems crazy to me they would close it down nationwide. In metro city areas it makes sense to shut it but keep it going on the edges of coverage please.
Glow reminds me of ReplayTV which was a great DVR! I was really sad when they stopped supporting it
I am so glad to hear some love for the glow. Amazon has served its space in the gadget world well but yes, it is heartbreaking that we do not own what we buy despite their generous return policy. I heard a few friends of mine who had kids loved it for the sake of it giving kids more than just one thing to focus on. I am really excited to see what comes next, from whoever, that will try this again, and maybe with even a little more grace.
Yeah I think you're right about Amazon not being able to market that thing well. I like to consider myself pretty tech savvy and up to date on most of the newest gadgets and I had never even heard about it until now.
yeah to be fair i'm also scared of the future of amazon devices, as i read somewhere, they're not making much money to justify the amazon alexa devices
(do not buy Amazon devices)
@@WeeWeeJumbo compared to siri and google, is the best, but somehow, is not even the most used, i guess i'll go for google, but they love shutting down their services and devices quicker than amazon
I highly recommend Frameo btw for grandparents. It’s a digital screen that shows pictures and you can send pictures through an app to their frames instantly.
I was sad when I purchased a used Amazon Echo Look and a month or two later they announced it’s being discontinued. Luckily I had registered it and was given credit, plus a echo show 5”, way more than what I paid.
I assumed they could just repurpose it as a security or webcam for chatting to keep it in the Echo ecosystem, apparently not.
This host needs her own channel. She’s awesome :)
Amazon also shut down serviced for their Amazon Cloud Cam service and bricked all the Amazon cloud cams (of which I had 3). They replaced my cloud cams with 3 Blink security cams and a year subscription to Blink Pro.
Love this series. Thanks for the reminder
Apple’s iPhone Mini line. I love small phones but I never particularly liked the home button and now the only small phone Apple will continue to make after 2023 is the se which has a home button, unlike the 12 and 13 mini
That glow thing was awesome and I never even heard of it!
Amazon cloud cam ended support in December. Amazon replaced each cloud cam you purchased with a Bilnk mini camera.
Maria Bamford on cnet??
Used to proudly carry a BlackBerry but it's been 10 years since I've made the switch to Samsung.
Amazon Cloud Cam was shutdown. 😞 Amazon replaced them with Blink cameras that I hate. Anyone have any suggestions on some solid indoor cameras?
I'm only 24 and seeing the iPod, blackberry and internet explorer be killed off is making me feel old.
RIP Stadia. You felt doomed from the get go.
dam, didn't even know about that Amazon interactive thingie, looked like something we could've used with our grandkids on the other side of the world.
Google Hangouts was replaced with Google chat where you can no longer make calls you have to create meet link
Here we go
Great video! I was almost sure you missed Facebook portal, but I was wrong, it stays on for a ridiculously cheap price of $50. It’ll likely be in your next year’s video!
My understanding is that Meta has started marketing the Portal more to business over consumers.
Funny, your CNET is spelled differently;)
@👉cneett Aww ya! Gotta love the CNEET! LOL!
for a brief period Internet Microsoft Explorer was the default browser for Apple Mac OS X
My brother loves his Surface Pro Duo; but, can't get it to Upgrade to Windows 10, from 8.1. So, idk how to keep it going.
BTW, The Glow looks so cool! What a shame. :(
I can see the Amazon Glow tech being used for online board games or tabletop RPGs.
It's sad seeing products moving to a 'rented' subscription model where it is bricked if the company discontinues support. For music/movies I still buy the physical CD/Bluray so I own it & am not relying on streaming services that can be discontinued at any time ...
I used my BlackBerry 9300 last week, and was only able to make and receive calls, but it still works.
That glow sounded neat, I’m surprised in a post covid world it didn’t do better.
I didn't even know the glow existed. They didn't advertise it anywhere. Looks like an awesome product.
The Spotify Car Thing was discontinued over the summer, I thought it was a neat idea
Glow appears to be a cool product. Literally never heard of it before this video and I’m pretty into tech. Can’t help but believe it lacked marketing effort.
The Glow could become a collector's item some time in the future
It's dead doesn't work at all. why would you collect it
@@m4st3rm1nd9 Given that Amazon is recalling it (with refund), it can become a rare item or museums could look for one in the future.
Man the iPod touch ending is sad. When I was too young for a phone I bought myself the iPod touch and it opened me up to the internet and CZcams. All around net positive
Another tech object that should be mentioned is the Amazon fire recast. The DVR. Which is really sad because it is one of the few DVRs that does not charge you a monthly fee to use all of its features.
3G shutting down was a bigger issue for other stuff besides phones, for example some cars and other non-obivous stuff still used it.
When it was announced that the Ipod was officially no more this year, I was & still am really sad about it. It revolutionized how we listen to & play music anywhere, anytime. This move (to discontinue Ipods) coupled with my very old PC's that need replacing, mean that I will be moving to Macs in 2023 so I can still play my large Itunes library that continues to grow any time anywhere without having to have all of the music downloaded onto a phone (Not an Iphone user even) or played from the Cloud & a large portion on my library isn't even the cloud because I originally added it to itunes & have it backed up in other ways but these original sources I no longer have access to. Thank Goodness for Bluetooth & wireless earbuds/headphones, otherwise I'd be hoppin' mad that the Ipod is officially no more.
Great job on the video. Very entertaining. Maybe some of them will become vintage tech worth a lot of money like the Atari 2600 and first generation Nintendo game systems. You might even get your money back from the Amazon Glow in 30-40 years...mostly for the rarity. Because this was the first time I've heard of it. Lol
The thing is you can still play Atari 2600 (of course, if you can find working tube tv), while today's tech is 95% working through cloud and after disabling it by almighty corporation it becomes a useless brick of circuit boards.
@@TrasheaterYou don't need a tube TV to play atari, you can still tune for analogue tv on modern tv sets.
I still miss Chromecast audio. Just got one from eBay
The Amazon Glow sounds cool but they didn’t advertise it at all. It’s cool they’re at least giving you a full refund. I could’ve used this for my son since we live 2k miles from family.
I had a prediction on that Amazon Glow video about its longetivity....
I’m proud to say I own one of the last iPods ever made, bought it March 2022
The biggest problem with Stadia was there was no draw. All of their games that I saw were games that were fun. Until you beat them. Or you HAD to have a stadia controller...that you could buy for $50+. Plus, it was designed for streaming first and foremost...which not every TV/PC can support and just gets bogged down by.
RIP iPod 2001-2022
I was not disappointed to see the iPod Touch go. It was just an iPhone without cell service, and that was it.
Shame about the ipod. I was welded to mine between 2005 and ~2015 when I finally got a smartphone.
I've never even heard of the Glow until today.. And I love tech.
How could you forget all the Sling boxes that were remotely bricked!
IE is still around in a way, just embedded in Edge's 'compatibility' mode. There's still ancient service platforms out in the wild that need it.
The Keurig drinkworks they said they refund for the machine but I got nothing yet. It's been a long time 😣
What about MP3 format being retired?
I'm a heavy Amazon user although a small echo was the only hardware of theirs that I owned. I never heard of the glow, I may have tried it so that my kids could interact with my brother and sister.
Dark Sky. Apple’s weather app does allow you to see the weather for a specific address only city name
We’re heartbroken at the death of the Amazon Glow as well…we would have been happy to pay a little extra each month for a Glow version of Amazon Kids, if it was an adoption/revenue issue. One of the coolest products Amazon has ever made. RIP Glow.
The comment of us not really owning much of the new tech we buy was a smart one. A lot of why I went OSS ages ago.
I truly miss to Microsoft band it was a great fitness tracker, and it worked very well
I never even heard of Glow. That looked fun.
My first smart phone was a Blackberry Storm
