  • Amberleigh House recorded a famous victory in the 2004 Martell Cognac Grand National at Aintree. Trained by Ginger McCain, the man responsible for Red Rum in the 1970s, Amberleigh House grimly stayed on up the run-in to catch the luckless Clan Royal and jockey Liam Cooper.
Lord Atterbury was third, with the previous year's winner Monty's Pass in fourth.

My dad died the weekend before this race. Sorting out some of his belongings my mother found my father's betting slip with Amberleigh House on it. Needless to say all the family were on it after this and the way he finished we believe to this day that Dad was on its back!!

Thank you for this great memory, I had a broken toe so sent mum to bookies to put £20 to win bets on two horses, one horse was a non runner so she put the £40 on Amberleigh house to win, I had a right go at her when she told me, but I gave her a big kiss & half the winnings!

Can ITV offer Jim McGrath a boat load of money to be the main commentry, gives great atmosphere to the race far superior to the weak Richard Hollies.
