    One of the best displays of jumping from the winner. No fatalities and many finishers. Rummy’s hooves loved that fast ground. Wonderful to hear Clive Graham doing the commentary. He was a journalist at the Daily Express and we lost him too soon. Great knowledge of racehorses. The horses were so beautifully turned out, carrying condition and all looking superb and great quality field, so lacking today. Next week's National has only 34 runners.

    To me this is Rummy's finest race - he was so fit that year and unbeatable and carrying 12 stone! He just takes off at the end and seems to speed up - he did not even look tired, like he could go round again - totally awesome!

    For me this was THE greatest ever single performance by a racehorse (and I'm sure Ginger McCain would agree!). Carrying 12st, as opposed to the maximum 11-10 now and conceding a pound to a double Gold Cup winner he showed L'Escargot a clean turn of foot in the home straight. Only one thing beats winning a Cheltenham Gold Cup and that is winning a Grand National under top weight. Red Rum did it twice and it hasn't been done since then. I would defy any horse in history to carry 12st and give Rummy a race at level weights that day. Arkle could possibly do it but even he would have to be on his A game. L'Escargot would avenge the defeat a year later but he needed an extra 10 lbs of weight advantage to do it.

      L`Escargot had the Soft Ground that prevailed for the 1975 Grand National to his advantage which Rummy Hated. If u watch the early stages of that National Rummy was almost Last over the 3rd fence (First Ditch) which he clamboured over, struggling in the ground. Also L`Escargots` season was revolved entirely around the Nationa,l and his pre-Aintree race was actually the 2 Mile Champion Chase at Cheltenham were he actually finished a creditable 4th on Bottomless ground. Before the 1974 National L`Escargot ran in the Cathcart Cup Chase ( Now called Ryanair Chase) at the Cheltenham Festival.

      @David Robinson A truly remarkable horse who will always be my no:1. Rummy had over 100 races in a 12 year career. He was successful in all types of races from 5f sprints to 4 and a half mile chases and was the only horse I can remember to complete the double with the Scottish National in the same season.

    Good on the amateur Duke of Alburquerque to finish in 8th place whilst in a plaster cast! The sport might be "safer" these days, but it's lost much of its heart along the way.

      I loved seeing the old Corinthian spirit from the 70s and 80s. Brod Munro Wilson was another enthusiast. But David Pitcher ruined the reputation of amateurs riding in the race.

    Brilliant horse, brilliant jockey, superb trainer, they dont make em like ginger anymore...just a shame it's not the same race anymore...disgrace what they did to the race...the greatest steeplechase, turned into a joke...no one wants horses to be hurt, but this is a tough sport...should have scrapped it...instead they serve us up a fake version of the race..john francine right, change it back....

      The Grand National is as soulless as it is now because the whole sport is run by the entertainment industry. It ran a come-one-come-all marketing pitch and in doing so have ended up having to cater for people who didn't like the risk element of the sport. Also, the trainers stopped buying the old Irish pointers in favour of faster French-bred horses which are weaker than the pointers. So you've got snowflake racegoers and weaker steeplechasers.

      @@tommotom7324 If you go to an Aintree meeting that doesn't use the National course you can see the plastic birch naked without the spruce dressing. It's no higher than a brush hurdle. Only three horses fell in last year's National and two unseated. I didn't mind levelling the drop at Becher's because of its high fatality rate but the fences have to be stiff enough for the runners to respect them. Some of the slow motion replays now show horses only trying to clear the guard rail.

    • @mervyncharter
      @mervyncharter Před 4 lety +3

      After the Death of Synchronized in 2012 they altered the core of the fences to this soft plastic version. Basically the National has become a glorified High Class Handicap Hurdle. A good Novice Chaser could easily get around. Everyone Panders to Social Media. Have u noticed how quickly the camera moves away quickly from bechers after they jump the fence. The Chair has become a Hurdle fence and the Most difficult fence on the Track is the Canal turn. The only thing unique about the national is the Number of Runners. Newbury, Sandown and Chepstow take more Jumping.

      @@mervyncharter Some interesting comments there. Yes, Rule The World was a Novice and Tiger Roll is prone to getting low at his fences. No. I haven't noticed the Becher's camera work. On my last visit to Aintree I was shocked to see how much the ground had been raised on both sides of the Chair. Aintree were under pressure to achieve minimal fatalities at all costs and it is a difficult balancing act for them. I like the tougher rules for qualifying for the race and I hope they realise in future years that there is now scope for making the fences more challenging again. As Ruby Walsh once said, it's speed that kills, not the fences.

      I know the 1973 National, was when red rum broke the track record, and the 1977 was the history national, but to me the 1974, was red rum’s best, carry 12st and beating a duel gold cup winner easy, just shows what a great horse red rum was in 1974, remember he would go on to win the Scottish National 3weeks later carrying 11st 13lbs, the most carried to victory in the last 45years!
