Pirate radio! Made famous by the likes of Wolfman Jack and Radio Caroline, glorified in movies like "The Boat that Rocked" and "Pump of the Volume". Hugely popular in the 60s and the 90s. And it's on shortwave radio today. Everything you need to know to to hear pirate radio broadcasts yourself!

It's October, pirate month is here. One of the best times during the year to listen for pirates is the Month of October, especially around Halloween.

Sometimes they even send Narrow Bandwidth TV signals with only a few lines and few images per second because some Pirate Radio operators are also technicians and engineers and there's even AM Stereo.
Some of them may even use compressed video.
I used to listen to a different kind of Pirates radio back in the 1970s, when Pittsburgh had a good team who actually knew how to play baseball. 😆
Pirate station Charleston Radio International is to hear on 5140 Khz. 24 hours nonstop.
7415 on NYE. Radio Caroline story text, purple cover, was incredible.
7400 Eastern Star. Russian and Japanese stuff. what a combo though.

I used to listen to radio luxinburb
I was wanting to listen to short wave radio for under $200.
After research, you tube, and reviews I am more lost than when I started. Even if I buy a 300 dollar unit I am doubtful it will work.
I live in a valley so I think I’ll need to make some funky antennae modifications. I guess I’ll need an external jack for an antennae, maybe wire. Not sure what kind of wire. I was thinking about connecting it to some fencing. Any ideas?
(My experience is seldom does anything work unless you know the trade secrets.)
For radio, if you're thinking traditional radio then Tescun or Eton. If SDR that connects to a computer SDRPlay RSP1A is great.
As far as living in a valley, shortwave radio signals do a better job getting in valleys than high VHF signals like TV and FM, you might be surprised how well you will receive signals.
The antenna doesn't have to be anything special, to start just try to get some wire in the air using nearby trees if possible. The wire isn't anything special, 18ga stranded wire is very common but almost anything will work.

@@BrokenSignal Of course there are pirates who are on shortwave only but there are thousands more on internet radio so no need to listen to the ones on shortwave with all the static.
Sounds kinda dumb. So what's the point. Are these somehow illegally broadcast or something. If it's using to much power it's not like everyone doesn't already do that.
Today it is more novelty, but back in the day it was the only way to get music that wasn't per-selected for you by a government or record company. The history of pirate radio is very fascinating, watch the movie "The boat that rocked"
