Hey Pete! We've got to give your dad a lot of credit for shutting the MD down as quickly as he did. Damage could have been SO much worse if he hadn't. Also, thank you so much for the continued great content even though some of it is due to issues. Stay well!
I thought the same thing bentfork. His dad knew the potential and reacted appropriately.
yup
Yep he got it shut down as soon as he heard things going south. And probably saved that motor and head from some very serious damage.
Poppa few acres knows his stuff.
Pete, I'm very impressed with the depth of your knowledge and versatility! Mechanic, accomplished nature based farmer. And all this AFTER a corporate career! Pete for POTUS!
I was just starting to get irritated with nothing to watch, then your vid came up Pete, thank u. Your one of the rare creator's who get a thumbs up immediately from me
Some people were asking me when you were gonna dig into the MD...like I'm your spokesman ahahahahahahaha
Well you are the Farmall Fanatic! You should know!
@@JustaFewAcresFarm AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 🤣
I was a auto mechanic for 30 years and never saw a valve bent that way. I would keep that on my desk as a conversation piece.
Nahhhh, take a hammer to it and straighten it out!
But seriously, I would hot glue that to a picture frame and hang it in the shop
saw some dude wearing a T shirt that said "you can trust me, I'm a mechanic!". most folks could not handle being a mechanic. I was lucky, i worked as a machinist. I never let no body working on my bicycles motorcycles cars, pick ups, or boats.
I'd never let my Dad forget that he broke my tractor! Ha ha! You are so lucky that your Dad is still with you, so close and interested in what you do. A real blessing. Great videos!
A man that does not allow external factors to impact his mood. Love the calm and collected way you roll with the punches that life doles out. Looking forward to the parts arriving and part to of this repair. IH B275 owner.
Well said. Cool and calm.
I wish I was as chill as Pete.
I admire your patience, taking apart things you just put on, no sign of a sour mood, Pete who are an inspiration, yes ,to me anyway
I agree that the immediate shut down helped save your engine i watched you from the beginning to the end on your rebuilt you done a heck of a job sorry to see you have to go back through it but at least you don’t have to redo the whole engine if you can find a back up head I’m thinking that it might have a small crack some where we had a crack in our head on our J D two cylinder we had it welded drove it around a little it over heated we shut it down and your head gasket look like the way our J D looked took the head back off and like your shop ours did the same thing they did a manga flex test over it crack on the other side of the head so they done what they called cold welded it they heated the head and stuff the crack with JB weld they let it air dry for about a week ground down the weld and re heated it again stuffed it full again done that three times and no problems today I’m not saying that’s what it is but the way your head surfaced look was exactly the way ours looked on our John Deere wish you good luck

Lucky for you Pete your dad was driving the M.D.,and he was aware of what was going on. It is good to have skilled equipment operators around.
Very important to listen to your equipment.
Pete, I'm almost as relieved and happy as you are!
You the man! So calm. You must adhere the the saying. “No use crying over spilt milk.”
I was so sick at my stomach for you in the first video. I'm so happy that things weren't worse.
Pete, you are such an optimistic person. Most folks would have been complaining and very downtrodden; but, you say, “this is a happy day.” I enjoy your videos so much. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Pete ,so glad the damage on the MD wasn't as bad as it could have been and that you've got the parts needed located. Knowing you you'll make time to get your best girl back and running in her shiny clean dress as soon as possible. There's a lot of Pete in the MD, Of course the 756 is envious maybe she'll get the Pete treatment this coming winter.
Cheers Pete, Hillary and all those chicken rustlers, take care
Hi Pete...I'm a mechanic for 40 years now and I've seen this many times.
Even the most reputable brands can fail...I hope the head piston and cylinder walls are OK 👍 👌
I think he’s talking about the spring
@@terryatpi ..I saw that a bit later. At the beginning I assumed it was a broken valve. Fortunately it didn't do too much damage...sometimes the cylinder walls get damaged and that's a big deal
Thanks to DAD, he had a since of what it maybe and shut it of quickly👍👍👍👍 Thanks Dad!
You’ll get ‘er back to top shape again. I wish my Dad was still around . Yours is a great man, but you already know that😊
Your ability to be positive is possibly my favorite part of your videos. Teach your children that trait and keep us informed of your progress
I’m always so impressed with people who have the knowledge and skill set (and confidence) to take apart the engine like that. Nice work.
While it does suck that you have to replace thous parts you might have never known something was wrong with the gasket until something really bad happened and you had to replace it all again.
Possible blessing in disguise. And your dad was smart enough to turn it off right away as soon as he knew something was wrong.
Pete, I watch all your videos but never comment. I wanted to say that I really appreciate your attitude through this ordeal. I'm sure you were initially discouraged, but you haven't let it keep you from moving forward. I struggle myself with significant setbacks like this and it often delays me more than it should due to the mental factor. I appreciate your pressing on.
Boy that's a lot of work just because the spring broke.
Good to hear the damage is not as bad as you thought. Looking forward to seeing the MD back in action.
Plan for the worst and in this case it's really good news. The Tractor lives for another day. Love to see the repairs and your Dad's old tractor running free out in the fields again.
Glad to see it didn't do as much damage as it could have been. Thanks for sharing Pete!
Your dad knew what he was doing when he shut it down. Nice catch, Dad Just a few Acres
That's not so bad. The sleeve looks okay from here, and the damage on the piston is in the middle, away from the edge. Your dad's cat-like reflexes paid off.
That's is absolutely the best outcome possible.. .. I've seen blocks and heads go to the scrap yard because of catastrophic damage... Great video Pete...
Good thing Pops knew what he heard and shut it off quickly.
Thank goodness the problem wasn't catastrophic, Pete. It made me a little sick to see you taking apart that tractor after all the work you put into it. Good luck with the parts and the re-refurbishment.
It breaks my heart to see you have to do that over again but such is the way with mechanical things. I’ve had to take things apart twice and that’s never fun, but boy are you lucky that the damage was so little. It could have been much worse. Can’t wait to see it up and running again!
Well Pete I'm glad that company will work with you so you could get that baby back to gather when ever you have the time. Good luck Pete, see you next time.!!!!
You know, I’ve been watching this channel religiously for a few years now, I watched the early days of explaining haybines with brightly coloured letters and the start of the MD saga. This is truly a great channel for education while being entertaining enough! Thank you for making my evenings and sometimes mornings way better! Good luck with the repairs to a beautiful restoration!
Well all in all you dodged a big bullet Pete. Your Dad did the right thing shutting it down. Your supplier did you a solid by going good for the issues, and looking forward to you video on the rebuild and install of the engine. Thanks for showing us what happened with the engine, and the head gasket. Your never too old to learn new things with the way to install that head gasket. Like your channel, and brings back many memories on the farm days of my childhood. Take Care!
Glad it rained. Wondering what’s wrong will keep you up at night. Now you know. Thanks. Great video.
I was very afraid to see inside of the MD but after this I have to say you're a very lucky guy. I've never had a dropped valve that didn't atleast wipe out a head, piston, and liner.
The repair is really not that bad. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Turns out maybe it’s a blessing in disguise that valve seal would surely have failed even more and possibly ruining the engine. Good luck I wish I were there to hold your light.
I just can't get use to Pete wearing brand new t-shirts! haha.
Glad to see the damage was minimal and you can fix it without tearing the whole engine out. Maybe we’ll see it in the field before summer is over. Oh, and it’s lucky you had a good mechanic driving it and knew to shut it down right away. 😉👍🏼
I was thinking the same thing. Your Dads quick response probably save this engine, or at least thousands more in repair costs. Cudos to him!!
Pete, you are a farmer/mechanic/architect with the heart of a teacher! Hats off to Hilarie, the glue at Just A Few Acres... Actually, after watching this one, I have a sense of relief. My daughter & son-in-law just purchased their homestead with an H sitting in the yard, woohoo! 🙂
Happy to see the damage was minimal Pete! Can’t wait to see you putting that tractor back to work!
Good morning Pete I’m still chuckling from the video yesterday!
Sounds like you got very lucky. Of course it helps that your dad was running it and understood what was happening. Could have easily have been much worse.
My heart sank when you said, “oh, no!” Glad it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been and poking forward to watching you get it running again! Kudos to your dad getting it shut down so quickly.
Happy it wasn’t as bad as you thought. Often times we imagine things being way worse then they are. So glad it’ll be an easy fix and can’t wait to see the MD back in action. Thanks for another great video.
Great news Pete.. Minor damage is always a good thing.. Glad they are working with you..
Hi Pete, I spend a lot of time on youtube watching various subjects. I must say that your videos are addictive. I enjoy watching all of your videos, no matter what you're doing. I know farming is hard work, buy it seems that your life is close to ideal - close to the land with a wonderful wife and two great kids. You are truly blessed.
I really think your fathers knowledge of engines saved that one from more damage. He immediately knew something happened and shut it down quickly. Glad it wasn't too bad!
My heart sunk almost as much as yours about the valve spring. The potential for damage was huge but got lucky in your unluckiness and the head may have been coming off anyway in time due to the gasket. We are cheering you on. Thanks for the video, the explanations, and your good natured attitude.
I can feel your joy! Can't wait to see her running again.
Hi Pete, so happy it's not major and I'm sure your father is relieved.
Glad for you Pete, the suspense was killing me.
I'm so glad to hear the damage is not as bad as you'd feared!
Kudo's to your Dad for quickly recognizing something's not right in the engine and stopping it immediately.
Hi Pete glad to see there isn't any serious damage and you'll be able to do all the work yourself. Thumbs up to Bates for what they did to help you . Take care .
Glad to hear Bates is standing up for you. I’ve had good luck with them to, good company to deal with 👍
Pete, I really appreciate your positive attitude. If this had been me, I’d have been crying like a baby!
So glad the damage wasn't catastrophic...I could see from your reaction at the end, it could have been much worse.
Look forward to the repair and seeing the MD run again. Have a great summer on the farm!
Sorry to hear that, being a farmer and would be mechanic myself, I understand exactly how this makes you feel. I admire your calm, I would go beserk.
Yes I quit mechanics. Became a Electrician. Too much stress. Pete has truckloads of patience.
Glad to hear no major damage was done. Hope y’all are all doing well!
So glad, so very very glad that you (and your Dad) have the know how and understanding to take care of this. Was reading through some of the comments. What a heartfelt and encouraging fan club you have. I truly enjoyed yesterdays video of the chicken rustlers!!! I enjoy the fun that's put into it when you have to get a job done and fun and enjoyment are also a priority. Mom had to do that when we were growing up. There were four girls in our family. Dad worked two jobs. He tried keeping up with the grass and whatever else was needed around the house. The day came when Mom said, Your Daddy needs help. You girls are going to have to be your Daddy's boys around here. That was quite a mind-blowing concept for me! I was a girly girl. I was very amused by how am I supposed to be a boy!?! No boys in our house, I don't know what that means. But, we girls just stepped up and did the best we could. We learned while we sweated! We have work ethic. You never know when you step up and get with it. Have a wonderful day Pete, Hillary and family. 🙋
You’ll get it fixed I have full confidence in you Pete!
Pete, I am so glad the damage wasn't worse. When you told us about the failure my heart dropped. I rebuild old stuff as well and know what it's like when after a rebuild and start up that the machine shop didn't replace the small plugs in the ends of both heads:( With the old stuff nothing is guaranteed. We do the best we can and fix all the little stuff as it comes up. Thanks for the great videos!:)
Glad Dad shut it down fast... So happy for you there is little damage. The MD will Live again!!
I'm glad that it had no major damage, hope it goes together well, and no more problems, thanks pete!
Glad to see it wasn’t major damage.
So glad it wasn’t a complete catastrophe Pete!
Hello Pete, sorry about the MD engine failure, your very lucky there wasn't more damage and your Dad shutting down the engine fast certainly helped.
Hope you don't find any other problems and it runs better then before 👍🏻
Sorry it happened...thank goodness it didn't do much damage..thanks Pete for the update on the M
Glad it wasn't any worse than it was, I'm looking forward to the rebuild videos!!! I know that judgment calls are tough but I agree with you not wanting to wait for the machine shop. Our local shop doesn't even want to work on tractor heads.
"When the channel was small."
Congratulations on your channel growth!
I'm glad to see that there wasn't much damage. I was worried for you!
Happy to hear that it wasn’t too bad. My heart sunk as well as I’m sure everyone else watching did when you went “oh no”. Hopefully you can get the parts to fix her up!
I started watching the whole restoration series after this video. I have to say I absolutely love hearing your dad talk. He reminds me so much of my dad who passed away several years ago. He was a farmer who served in the army. He was a mechanic his whole life. He worked for the city for years. He even preferred welding, and heavy maintenance over things like rebuilding carburetors. He would fabricate things for use on the farm like your dad. So many similarities. They were cut from the same cloth.
Thanks for the update Pete . I'll be glade to see the MD running again .
A positive attitude goes a long way, on the customer side and the supplier side. Wish that was more the norm...
Hey Pete.
I am glad to see no bent rod or busted head.
A fluke in dede.
It should go back together nice.
I live very close to Bates, and have done business with them a lot. A Very Good Company, family owned and they know how and what you are going thru. They are just as concerned as you are about your tractor and it’s outcome. Only the very best to you…
Love your videos watch them as a great escape from all the bad news and awful happenings around the world . You are doing a great service and besides they are very interesting both the tractor and farming episodes.
Glad that the news wasn't worse for your MD. I know that tractor means a lot to you and you put a lot of time and sweat restoring it. Glad to know that the fixes, while major, could have been a lot worse. The old girl is in great hands!
Beautiful tractor, glad you have restored it. SO very sorry the problem happened to you. I restored and 8N & Ford 4000 3 cyl diesel, and you are correct on finding good parts. They are a total hit and miss. GOOD LUCK , looking forward to seeing it run again and watching your repair video. You are very patient!.
Glad it wasn’t too bad! I’m like you, if I can do something no way I’m paying someone else to do it. No one cares about my stuff more than me!
What a big relief there Pete! It could've definitely been much worse. Luckily your dad knew what to do and acted so quickly, minimizing the damage. He'll sigh a deep sigh too. Get him back up in that saddle again when she's purrin' like a kitten once again. She's in good hands. With the news on the head gasket, who knows, this may've been a blessing in disguise. We're pullin' for ya there Kemosabe!
Have you ever heard of "Route 38 Engine Machine Shop" in Newark Valley, NY? That is pretty close to you and the owner is a fellow CZcams creator, David RIchards. He is so old school his machine shop runs on steam power. No joke.
Great news! Looking forward the installation.
amazing how little damage was done. thanks for the update!
WOW!!! I am so happy to see that the damage was so minimal!!! GEEZE! it could have been so much worse! Good luck on the Repairs!
Your dad was quick to recognize the problem. Glad it isn't so bad!.
That is probably the best case scenario given what happened, referring to finding the head gasket issue and the minimal damage done. Really the only that got buggered up after the failure was the valve giuld basically. Does this fall into the all things happen for a reason category 🤔 by finding the gasket issue and saving a full liner and piston replacement?
Your very lucky it didn’t do more damage thanks in no small part to you Dads quick action. Interesting about putting in the head gasket dry. I learned something. 👍
Real glad to hear that it wasn't worse. Can't wait to see the repair videos and to see it back up and running again. Good luck Pete!!
Good news Pete. Nice to hear that the damage was minimal. God Bless your supplier { the Bates group } for the way they treated you with the replacement parts. Good luck on the rebuild. From what I've seen of your abilities, you'll do just fine ! Thanks for sharing your story.
I am a retired mechanic I feel your pain the valve spring decision makes me very nervous but I believe I would do the same I hope luck is on your side I sure would not want to take that head back off a third time . I'm glad the company is working with you on the parts . Hopefully it goes back together smoothly and all your gremlins will be gone and you'll be set for another 60 years of service good luck looking forward to seeing the progress on this one.and remember life is rougher than the cob and shorter than the kernel
im mechanic to and i see how they slowly turn in fitters from mechanics, connecting pc to car and replacing parts until is done
Glad to hear Pete that the damage isn’t that bad ! Y’all take care 🤙
I was riddled with anxiety as you began to take things apart. So glad it turned out that it can be repaired without too much work and expense. Wish you the best Pete. Look forward to each and every video.
It is great that Bates is helping out through their manufacturer's advice about installing the head gasket dry and price of the replacement parts. This sounds like a great opportunity to praise the Lord for a broken valve spring for it revealed the head gasket problem before more major damage was done.
Also, a thank you belongs to dear old Dad for shutting down the engine so quickly. Tough loss but so well minimalized; CONGRATULATIONS!!! You have a great support system of wise people about you.
When we had our farm I dealt with Bate Corporation for repairs and restoration parts on many occasions. My experiences were always good and I talked with conscientious sales persons and considerate customer services reps. Never had a bad time.
Cheers!
Whipple
Great video, fun and informative.
Glad the repair won’t be too bad.
Hi Pete! Ken here. Glad your engine didn’t get much damage. The engine knew it had head gasket leaks and I think it dropped a valve so you’d have to see the leaks. Smart engine. Lol
My father in law is like this doesn't cuss , never heard him say a bad think about anyone even me lol , and always makes his own day a good one - the world needs more like them for sure . Good Luke Pete . I've been struggling w my h and the governor - trying to take pointers from you and my dad on my attitude and demeanor !
At least the gasket issue was identified! Great video, thanks Pete.
Glad to hear that this wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Best luck.
