I used to work at a General Cinema theater. I was working there when they first started using this trailer. Dgontar was right, it was around 1986, although they may have continued using it through the early 90's. When they first started using this trailer, they had a contest to guess the number of pieces of candy. You had to fill out a card and drop it in a box. I forget what the prize was.
I remember the clouds from that intro as a kid. I wanted to be a pilot for as long as I could remember. When that scene would come on I would think that someday that place would be my playground. Not only do I play there now but I work there as well.
I remember they had a count the candy contest with this trailer when it first aired. There was a money prize and I remember everyone trying to count that candy but it wasnt easy. THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.
Ah, memories. I remember seeing this in theaters many times in my childhood, from the whimsy "concessions available, toss your drink when done, no smoking" policy trailer to the "Feature Presentation" trailer with the cloudy sky fading to space background with the familiar majestic synthesized fanfare. These bring back memories...
It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling seeing that General Cinema logo. I lived not far from one in Katy, Tx from 87' to 88'. I saw a lot of movies at that six screen theater!
So THIS is where the MST3K "Jettison snacks into space" parody comes from! (episode 404: Teenagers from Outer Space). I laughed my ass off every time I saw that skit, but never knew what they are actually referencing. Thank you so much for uploading this!
I remember seeing this intro when back to the future 2 came out. And that company was my first job in my town. Saw a lot of free movies. Now it a red robin where it use to be.
Yes indeed, ILM did this. There was a contest when it was first launched and it included a voice over that stated it was made by ILM and there was a contest to count the amount of popcorn that appears. I think this is still better looking than what is out there today for other chains. It looks polished.
Which was rereleased in 1992 so it still used the 1986 General Cinema logo. Disney used to reissue their films a lot for fear that a video release may kill off future theatrical revenues.
Thanks for uploading this!! I have a copy on 35mm film that is is fair condition, I use it for sound tests. I was told that the "cloud" background took a film crew sitting on a beach in Hawaii a week to film...I wonder why, lol.
They parodied the GCC "Space Candy" bumper in the episode "Teenagers from Outer Space." There's a full episode video here on youtube, you can see the parody at almost exactly 44 minutes in.
the last time I saw The Little Mermaid (released by Walt Disney Pictures) in 1989, the Space Candy General Cinema Policy Trailer is shown, followed by the GCC Clouds "Feature Presentation" Policy Trailer, the 1985 Walt Disney Pictures logo and start of the film.
I remember the MST3K guys lampooned this General Cinema intro during their Comedy Central episodes. They opened their "external cambot feed" and there was a bunch of movie garbage floating on strings. Joel and the bots then proceeded to perform the General Cinema Space Candy theme a Capella. It was stupid, but funny.
anyone else remember cheering with your friends, every time you saw the cup make it into the trash? yeah, we were smart ass little shit heads......but it really does take me back.
At my hometown GCC theater, this was definitely "audience participation". Clap in time to the jaunty music, then clap and cheer as the cup went in the trashcan.
I was told that the clouds at the mid point was filmed by a crew who spent six days on a beach in Hawaii to get that shot..what a rough gig that must have been... :)
It used to be fun to see movies. Before the half hour's worth of Coke commercials filmed by students, "First Look" at some show I'll never watch, uncomfortable assigned seats from which you can't move if your neighbor is annoying, etc.
This was the first GC trailer i saw when i went to the totowa location to see films like white fang on 46. Then when GCC opened clifton commons i saw the 1997 trailer, a swan song. RIP GCC.
The last time I ever saw this logo in a theatre was on Dec 31, 1993. I've been looking for a decent mpeg of it online for years, but still havent found one.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been hunting this bumper for years, particularly the second part. I loved that music; it's stuck with me since childhood.
@Fragglevision I don't think the Space Candy bumper was used until 1986 so The Great Muppet Caper, Heidi's Song and the 1983 reissue of The Sword in the Stone along with the 1984 reissue of Pinocchio would have likely used either the 1975 General Cinema policy bumper or another policy bumper from the early 80's that is not as popular as the space candy bumper.
electrogeek77 it's so funny you should say that. I was born in 89 but remember my mom taking me to see movies at the GCCs in Houston and seeing the space candy trailer. It scared the hell out of me, and wherever we'd go and they were still using it, I screamed and cried and my mom had to take me out of the theater till it was over. Now I'm almost 30 and I watch this again, and I haven't the slightest idea why I was so scared of it. But as soon as the carnival music started, I remember crying for my mom to take me out quickly. I think it may have been the crescendo and loud music at the end because I have this memory of being most scared when I saw the cup floating toward the trash can. I did not like loud noises or loud music as a little kid. TL:DR used to be scared of the space candy, now have no idea why. Thanks for this cathartic trip down memory lane lol
You know, Actually it would still make a great intro today, maybe with updated graphics, but followed by the seats that transforms into like part into the film with the AMC slogan.
"cobra", yes..."top gun" i din't see until the fall...it was at our plitt theater before moving to a general cinema in october '86....."the delta force" came out around late february/early march '86 at the plitt cinema...i din't see that until it came out on vhs....
@Kitsuneranger I wouldn't say that. Two of the chains where I live (Wehrenberg and Warren) serve Pepsi. Goodrich also served Pepsi when they owned theatres in my area.
Thanks for posting this! I forgot all about this. Took me right back! How did you get such a good copy of this? Doesn't look like it was camcorded off of a screen.
There is a significantly better quality version of this trailer that was uploaded by OnePyroTec. But it's unlisted. However, I have the link. So here it is: czcams.com/video/eRdoRaKRVQM/video.html

I believe I saw this when I saw Aladdin back in late 1992. When I passed by that General Cinema theater at the mall, it was now an AMC. Long Live GCC.
I remember the clouds from that intro as a kid. I wanted to be a pilot for as long as I could remember. When that scene would come on I would think that someday that place would be my playground. Not only do I play there now but I work there as well.
That's awesome! The clouds inspired you to become a pilot. I loved seeing those clouds as well.
I remember they had a count the candy contest with this trailer when it first aired. There was a money prize and I remember everyone trying to count that candy but it wasnt easy.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

damn that brings back memories of working at Seaview Square in mid 80s.....
I used to work for GCC back when I was 18...and I'm 39 now! Loved working there! Thanks for posting this.
When this first came out at Towne East Mall Theater in Wichita word spread around a lot came to the theater to see the flying space candy lol.
It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling seeing that General Cinema logo.
I lived not far from one in Katy, Tx from 87' to 88'. I saw a lot of movies at that six screen theater!
I saw "The Flintstones" in 1994 at the GCC in Plymouth Meeting Mall. It featured THIS trailer prior to the start of the movie.
So THIS is where the MST3K "Jettison snacks into space" parody comes from! (episode 404: Teenagers from Outer Space). I laughed my ass off every time I saw that skit, but never knew what they are actually referencing. Thank you so much for uploading this!
Every Minnesota movie buff knew this one!
Right before "ALIENS" summer of '86! It has that expansive celestial feel to it. Still awesome.
I remember seeing that before Batman (1989) came out! I was six years old!
I was too young to see that so I saw it on vhs
My favorite theatre was Towne West in Wichita. I miss the smaller theatres, when you went to different theatres around town to see a certain film.
I wish I could go back in time to this world.
I do miss this so the last time I saw was in 1987 space balls in the Houston Galleria mall
a prime example of how miniatures and motion control look so much better than CGI
I remember seeing this intro when back to the future 2 came out. And that company was my first job in my town. Saw a lot of free movies. Now it a red robin where it use to be.

This takes me back
General Cinemas owned all the theaters in Erie up until the early 90s. I remember these bumpers all too well.
So many wonderfull memroies to this theater company
Yeah. I used to enjoy watching this went I went to the movies as a kid. Ahh the memories!
***** you are so right
Amen to that! :)
@@amcstudio30 memories.
I wonder if it's possible to buy out a defunct company?
Which was rereleased in 1992 so it still used the 1986 General Cinema logo. Disney used to reissue their films a lot for fear that a video release may kill off future theatrical revenues.

I think Stranger Things just included a reference to this in Season 3. It plays right before "Dawn of the Dead" starts.
You're right! That very trailer was playing when the kids snuck into the movie theater.
My all time favorite!
And now our feature presentation!!
the last time I saw The Little Mermaid (released by Walt Disney Pictures) in 1989, the Space Candy General Cinema Policy Trailer is shown, followed by the GCC Clouds "Feature Presentation" Policy Trailer, the 1985 Walt Disney Pictures logo and start of the film.

I'd love to find an HD version of this ;-)
anyone else remember cheering with your friends, every time you saw the cup make it into the trash? yeah, we were smart ass little shit heads......but it really does take me back.

i miss this so
so beautifull to see
I was told that the clouds at the mid point was filmed by a crew who spent six days on a beach in Hawaii to get that shot..what a rough gig that must have been... :)
Right, lol? 😆
My husband saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Aladdin.
Just be glad the "Feature Presentation" didn't animate like the "Coming Attractions" and "Also Showing" bumpers before it!
Had a lot of General Cinema locations in Indianapolis. They would be in the mall and outside of the mall too in a separate building.
It used to be fun to see movies. Before the half hour's worth of Coke commercials filmed by students, "First Look" at some show I'll never watch, uncomfortable assigned seats from which you can't move if your neighbor is annoying, etc.
So Many Memories... ;[````
I remember being told that if you could "count the popcorn" you would win a free drink/candy/ticket/whatever.
I was most likely stoned at the time.
same here.... worked for GCC from 1989 to 95 and that was the first policy trailer I remember playing.
I saw this when I went to see Star Trek 5 in 89
I want to crawl into :35 and live there. I remember those clouds and the music and it reminds me of being a kid with my mom
some unknown trivia about this policy trailer it was done by Lucasfilm's
Industrial Light & Magic
This was the first GC trailer i saw when i went to the totowa location to see films like white fang on 46. Then when GCC opened clifton commons i saw the 1997 trailer, a swan song. RIP GCC.
"ferris bueller" went to our plitt/cineplex odeon theater....i never saw "manhattan project" until it came to cable.......
I saw this in 1987 with space balls
june 1986....i remember going to see rodney dangerfield's "back to school", and that was the first time it was shown in joliet, il.
The last time I ever saw this logo in a theatre was on Dec 31, 1993. I've been looking for a decent mpeg of it online for years, but still havent found one.
Thumbs up if you cheered in the theater when the cup went into the trashcan...
I haven't seen or heard this in years. Thank You.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been hunting this bumper for years, particularly the second part. I loved that music; it's stuck with me since childhood.
The last time I saw this was in 1987 in Houston garleria General Cinema watching Space balls 530 showing
Takes me back to my early childhood in the mid-to-late '80s :-)
When you see this in the movie theatre with better sound and video quality, it is much more impressive. This upload does not do it service.
My childhood~!
I remember with that with the floating snacks and drinks.Wish movie theatres had this old stuff again.
Forget which movie I saw this first at, but it was definitely 1986 when they premiered. Damn, I miss General Cinema.
This was the WGBH ident of policy trailers - chock full of nostalgia and the ability to scare children witless.
electrogeek77 it's so funny you should say that. I was born in 89 but remember my mom taking me to see movies at the GCCs in Houston and seeing the space candy trailer. saw this at totowa cinema
You know, Actually it would still make a great intro today, maybe with updated graphics, but followed by the seats that transforms into like part into the film with the AMC slogan.
Since GCC is out of the picture, All theatre chains started their vendetta against Pepsi
"cobra", yes..."top gun" i din't see until the fall...it was at our plitt theater before moving to a general cinema in october '86....."the delta force" came out around late february/early march '86 at the plitt cinema...i din't see that until it came out on vhs....
Plitt, General Cinema, Loews, been to them all.
AMC Theaters, they're OK.
Century, UA, Regal......you name 'em
If you go to the filmtech website be sure to watch the crown neonopolis 14 video. It's quite good.
I am a man of the constant sorrow
Long live GCC
I will try to do that soon. :)
Quiet everyone lethal weapon is about to begin
Those Space Candies and Pepsi cups made me wanna reach out and grab them.
@Kitsuneranger I wouldn't say that. Two of the chains where I live (Wehrenberg and Warren) serve Pepsi. Goodrich also served Pepsi when they owned theatres in my area.
"transformers" was, but "flight..." came to a plitt theater that summer, which was taken over by cineplex odeon....
no wait, it sounds like the carnival is back in town!
This was from summer 1986.
wow, it looks like some kid's fantasy type intro
Proletariat, if you dont mind me asking, where did you find this video, is there a site on the internet that has it with good video quality?
When you jettison the snacks into space:
This trailer was made in 1986, not the early 90s.
Thanks for posting this! I forgot all about this. Took me right back! How did you get such a good copy of this? Doesn't look like it was camcorded off of a screen.
@Proletariat6 thank you so much i live thease days
And I think Flight of the Navigator and Transformers: The Movie also were some of the first films to feature the new 1986 General Cinema logo, right?
@acceptthis01 I meant the major theatre chains.
so fucking auwsum so many great memories
Have you seen the MST3K parody of it?
There is a significantly better quality version of this trailer that was uploaded by OnePyroTec. But it's unlisted. However, I have the link. So here it is: czcams.com/video/eRdoRaKRVQM/video.html
I saw Beauty And The Beast.
Did The Manhattan Project and Ferris Bueller's Day Off also use the 1986 General Cinema logo or the 1980 one instead?
I saw The Little Mermaid.
Did I see this before LITTLE MERMAID originally?
Taken from The Little Mermaid (1989)
So Cobra, Top Gun and The Delta Force still used the 1980 General Cinema logo, even though they all came out in 1986, right?
What month in 1986 was the first to use the General Cinema Space Candy bumper?
What year was this General Cinema Space Candy bumper first used?
Did Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Manhattan Project use this Space Candy bumper or the 1980 General Cinema logo?
***** Well if it Is brought back again then, you'll see a flying Coca - Cola cup and the cup with the AMC slogan goes to the trash can.
I know how you feel, I remember this here in Houston at the General Cinema In the Galeria Mall at westhimer and Post oak
@amctc10 nope, bought out by amc
Whaaa? Wheres the turn the cell phone off reminder? :-p
@kukufu this was this shit back in the day
