    This was my first Derby. I was 20. Infact it was the 1st race I ever wagered on. I bet on Laser Light, came up a little short. But I have been hooked on Thouroghbred racing ever since. Btw it's nice to hear Howard Cosell again. I would have never have thought that 41 yrs ago.

    Look how far Gato del Sol had to run for the victory. He went the distance and then some.

    I saw Gato Del Sols previous race, he was closing like a freight train, and I knew he would win the derby. And he did.

      Yes, it is a beautiful song indeed!
      Plus, in case you are unsure of the lyrics thereof, they are below.
      The sun shines bright on My Old Kentucky Home,
      'tis Summer, the people are gay;
      The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom,
      while the birds make music all the day.
      The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,
      all merry, all happy and bright;
      By'n by hard times come a-knocking at the door,
      then My Old Kentucky Home, good night!
      Weep no more, my lady!
      O, weep no more today!
      We will sing one song for My Old Kentucky Home,
      for My Old Kentucky Home far away.

    This was my fifth and last live Derby. Thanks to my buddy Bob, I got to go as a go-fer for the ABC production crew; there was a lot of free time for us and I'd planned on watching the race from one of the twin towers, but I got aced out of that and wound up in the CD basement, relaying the odds to the trucks. I'd spent much of that week in the trucks watching replays of the prep races, then on race day called a friend of mine in NY and left a message that I thought Gato might be worth a deuce at OTB. During the race, I kind of forgot my 'job' and watched as Eddie started gaining ground on the backstretch, so that by the time they'd turned for home, he looked like he actually had a shot, I'm a good fan and enjoy rooting vociferously and I did, so much so that on the other audio end I was asked, in an expletive-filled way to tone it down.
    Lots o' fun!

    First Derby winner I picked, way too young to bet at the time. My family all picked a horse and if there was a winner we got a malt from UDF. Good memories and as I did get old enough to bet Eddie D was always one of my go to jockeys.

    I believe Hancock brought him back to the States after his stud career ended overseas...forgot where he was, but he brought him back to the farm and let him live out his life there.

    I was the bet runner down to Caliente in Tijuana....and we all had a bet on Gato who had won the Del Mar Futurity ! The real call of the race (not that idiot D Johnson) was a classic.."and moving up under his own courage is Gato Del Sol !)

    I think Wavering Monarch may be the only horse to have made any impact on the breed.

    Casalaria was bothered badly by the van berg horse in this Derby. Knew the owners, went to school with their son. Moved up on thru DQ.
