Just rewatched our version of RR&R and have to say it’s a rather misleading title, seeing as there are no races or runaways (station jokes notwithstanding)
I had a copy at home in Sydney - fairly sure now it must have been a present from one of my British relatives (of which I have several). Britain and Australia are both PAL regions so the tape would play fine in both.
Gondarth will truly appreciate this. This is also why home video should make a comeback sometime, not only because streaming services can remove stuff for a period, but also because it’s one of the few times where you can watch a random bunch of episodes together in one go.
18 episodes sounds insane considering how every vhs I ever owned contained 6 episodes, so essentially we’re looking at a 3 in 1 package all in one bundle
I used to have that VHS; it was incredibly awesome! So loved all those random episodes of mostly, well, chases, races and runaways, with a few relaxed! I just love those episodes so much! Makes it so thrilling for anyone who loves Thomas & Friends! And I got vibes of "Percy Runs Away" and "Down the Mine", especially! In fact, this was how I watched some series 2 episodes, which were cool, especially "Thomas, Percy and the Coal", "A Close Shave", "Break Van" and "The Runaway". And those series 4 episodes were a perfect way to end it off! Oh, yeah, and I was in love with the adverts at the beginning of the video, starting with Thomas & Friends, of course. 😄
This was one of my favourite Thomas videos to watch when I was in school. It had a great collection of episodes and I always loved the action that happened in the stories. The Series 2 episodes were the ones that excited me the most, because of the music, action and Ringo's narration that combined them together. As the episodes are exciting, there are episodes that doncalm you down before you get to the next exciting adventure. It's a truly great tape to introduce new Thomas fans to, as it will intrigue them to understand what happened before and after those episodes. I have that video tape and it still makes me happy together. I love the font and how 'Chases, Raves & Runaways' is written. That always drew me to the video tape when I was introduced to it 😀.
Great work Luke. Chases, Races and Runaways was always a great VHS to watch, that and the Biggest Party Video Ever VHS Tape. Those were great tapes. I also liked watching "Rock and Roll" and "Thomas and Stepney", as they were the tapes to introduce me to Thomas as well.

For me, it was “Biggest Video Party Ever”, which had a load of great stories. I also had a compilation video of Series 5 and Series 7, but that was the one I kept coming back to.
I loved this video. Not only that the cover looks promising, but while watching the VHS, it never disappoints and mostly stays true to the title. It's sad that Thomas and the Magic Railroad had turned Thomas into something that wasn't intended to be, and caused others to change their views toward the franchise as time passed.
Chases, Races & Runaways will always be a special one to me because not only was this the first TTTE&F video I watched as a kid, but the first ever 18 episodes I watched way back in 98' whist I was in hospital (Reasons I won't go into)-- anyway this is the most memorable vhs experience I had as a kid. I also have fond memories watching Percy and Harold & Other Stories / Rock 'N' Roll & Other Stories a lot as well.
The name sounds similar to Races, Rescues, and Runaways. The difference between these two vhs’s is that Chases, Races, and Runaways has season 1-4 episodes and Races Rescues and Runaways has season 5 episodes.
I think it was because she wanted Sodor to be “wherever you want”, so avoided firmly placing it anywhere. It’s this magical land somewhere far away. Awdry of course wasn’t bothered with any of that and was very big on realism, so placed it firmly in the British Isles.
your passion is so infectious that it makes all your videos a delight and this one is no different also, your sense of comedic timing is On Point. Your editing is quick and snappy while still being well paced and coherent also that view for Gordon gag got me so good lmao. absolute brilliance
Another great video. I'm not 100% sure if I had this VHS, but I do remember watching a lot of these episodes as a toddler. I think Percy Runs Away was the first episode I ever watched and since then I was hooked to the show.

That was damn good. You did a really great job capturing the magic of being a kid in that specific era and evoking a very specific feeling. One that I myself have been trying to relive these last few years by buying a CRT TV and buying old VHS tapes, some of which cater to special interests that are more relevant to me nowadays. While yes, you were talking about a specific Thomas VHS, but another aspect of a lot of Thomas tapes in those days were the VCI logos that permeated the front and the back of these tapes. A logo that I associate solely with Thomas because of how often it popped up in those tapes. Really good video. unrelated tangent - I took some inspiration from the animated background of your videos and tried something similar in a project I finished a few months ago and I feel it gave it a bit more of a visual kick. In the US one of the most nostalgic and important DVD’s I grew up with was the 2003 Thomas and his friends help out DVD, which was originally released on VHS back in 1996! This VHS/DVD featured 11 episodes from Series 1-3 and while some of the stories are missing in their storyline order. This DVD was actually exciting and fascinating growing up too. I mean it starts with Edward’s introduction story which grown on me as a kid and still adore it to this day, James’ triumphant story with the troublesome trucks which made me like James and Season 1 music of Thomas, Thomas and Percy pulling the post train at night with breathtaking night visuals and iconic music that I adored as a kid, a story where Thomas gets in trouble with the police and has Toby now working on Thomas branchline, a story where Thomas avoids a danger sign on purpose and plunges down a mine as Gordon comes to his rescue putting an end of their rivalry, a story where Percy keeps his promise which has some amazing storm visuals and some epic music, the introduction to Donald and Douglas with their iconic theme and has a break van that literally dies, a story where Edward finds a traction engine and saves it from scrap where the line from Edward “people I say I’m old fashioned, but I don’t care!” Made me realize how much Edward is as an amazing character, a story where Bertie helps out Thomas and takes his passengers to a chase on Edward’s branchline and he catches up to Edward and saves the day, and of course the thanksgiving story where Thomas and Percy rescue some villagers even though this was meant to be a Christmas story? It may not be perfect, but 10 out of the 11 stories made me love and appreciate Thomas as a kid and as an adult, it is my favorite compilation VHS/DVD of Thomas the tank engine and friends!
Oh yeah! I had this VHS when I was a kid, it was absolutely killer! I still remember the adverts at the start showing the other Thomas VHSs available at the time alongside some other shows. I don't know if this was advertised as a bumper special of some sort since there were a lot of episodes on it, more than the usual for the time. Really looking forward to this one and taking a trip down memory lane

Lovely video.This just shows the benefit that dvds have over streaming services.Streaming services are great and all but dvds/vhs tapes provide an experience that just can't be beat (or at least to me) - also,while yes they can become damaged over time,they won't get taken from you after five years or so. Some dvds from my youth that I loved were Truck Loads of Fun,The Complete Series 5,Tales from the Tracks,Thomas' Trusty Friends,The Chocolate Crunch,just to name a few
Yeah, there's just something special about Chases, Races and Runaways. It just ticks all the boxes. Obviously, when you're a child, quantity can sometimes override quality. You just want more of the same thing, even if you grow to realise when you get older that that choice doesn't always mean the outcome is better. Outside of having fantastic artwork and presentation, CR&R manages to find the perfect balance of quantity and quality and actually has a gimmick that works. Is it perfect? Nah, there are some episodes that could be swapped out for others, and it's surprising that this VHS release, out of them all, never got a DVD re-release, but when it comes to being a child of the 90s, if you grew up watching Thomas and Friends on analog videotape, this release was practically mandatory.
I made my own custom tape inspired by Chases Races and Runaways, with half of the episodes there, but even better episode picks, limited to seasons 1 to 3 and in the style of the bumper specials from The Video Collections. I called it Thomas Comes to Breakfast and 17 other stories and the episodes I had on it were: Percy Runs Away; Dirty Objects; Off the Rails; Down the Mine; Thomas, Percy and the Coal; Old Iron; The Runaway; Percy Takes the Plunge; A Close Shave; Thomas Comes to Breakfast; Edward's Exploit; Ghost Train; Percy's Promise; Trust Thomas; Toby's Tightrope; Escape; Oliver Owns Up; Percy, James and the Fruitful Day

As per usual, Seasons 3 and 4 end up with the best episodes on the tape. Not saying “A Close Shave” or “Down the Mine” are bad; just pointing out how many bangers from the latter two Awdry seasons this VHS has.
This tape was absolutely mega, could not go wrong with it and I remember watching it as a kid time and time again. But I have to ask, what about the “Thomas and Stepney” VHS? That was the first one I ever saw and have never been able to find a tape that quite beats it’s beauty and chilled out range of stories. What do you think?

I've heard all this stuff before, thomas fans have run out of things to say about the classic series. That's why the hit era is becoming more popular now, people are watching it and realizing it's not as bad as people say it is.
I wouldn't necessarily say fans have run out of things to say, it's just that creators like Unlucky Tug have talked about the series in a way that both fans and general audiences can appreciate. I believe there's still plenty more to say about the classic series.

Most of my early experiences with Thomas had that VCI intro. And the video collection which intro I actually preferred. Very nostalgic.

As per usual, Seasons 3 and 4 end up with the best episodes on the tape. Not saying “A Close Shave” or “Down the Mine” are bad; just pointing out how many bangers from the latter two Awdry seasons this VHS has.
In Canada and the US, Carlins Anerican dub of Down The Mine is so popular they reused it at least 3 times on 3 releases!

This tape was absolutely mega, could not go wrong with it and I remember watching it as a kid time and time again. But I have to ask, what about the “Thomas and Stepney” VHS? That was the first one I ever saw and have never been able to find a tape that quite beats it’s beauty and chilled out range of stories. What do you think?

One of these days I plan on making a custom DVD of the vhs tape.
My personal project, "Thomas & Friends: Old & New", is reaching a whole new stage. I have emailed a package of content that relates to it to the Talyllyn Railway for review in the lead-up to being potentially showcased in connection with the Awdry Extravaganza Weekend. No confirmation response yet, but I sent it out on Saturday around midday, so at this point they will be in the stage of reviewing it, but I'll give them their time and check my account again at the end of the week. I can assure you though; I worked very hard and single-handedly on ensuring it would be a good sign for the future of the franchise, and that I will ensure it as far as I can. The Talyllyn Railway read what I provided and replied on Monday, as I only just discovered. They loved what I brought to the table as a creator, but in relevance to the Extravaganza displays it contradicted from being seen as legit. To be fair, I hadn't directly figured the Extravaganza had nothing to do with the future of the franchise - at least by conception, which was all along what my intention for the project was. I want to own this tape, but my dad won’t let me because he says that VHS Tapes are out of date. I kind of agree, but the VHS Tapes still have a charm that Blu-rays don’t
Looks like a neat package, though the cover misleads by having screenshots of episodes not in there, and making it look like a very crash-heavy compilation.

I've heard all this stuff before, thomas fans have run out of things to say about the classic series. That's why the hit era is becoming more popular now, people are watching it and realizing it's not as bad as people say it is.
I wouldn't necessarily say fans have run out of things to say, it's just that creators like Unlucky Tug have talked about the series in a way that both fans and general audiences can appreciate. I believe there's still plenty more to say about the classic series.
@@usualblokeluke it looks cool but the narrators are inconsistent, the goofs were funny once but now they are just annoying and placement of some locations makes me want to die.
