A study on raccoon density in rural areas determined that there would be 40 or more per square mile. In urban areas with more food sources there can be upwards of 1000 per square mile. I use white 5 gallon buckets from Walmart and generic 220s. Before going out, I set all my springs on the back deck using a piece of 3/8" braided rope. Drop the folded up trap and bait into the bucket. Everything is easy to carry from the SXS to where I am setting the trap. I cut relatively narrow slots in the bucket offset an inch or so from the handle. For bait really cheap dry catfood mixed with cheap sardines in oil. A big handful of catfood and a can of sardines makes enough for 3 or more sets. I was using dogproof traps but did like signs of a struggle around the traps or dispatching the raccoons with a 22lr pistol and the resulting mess in the SXS. With trap set a little deeper in the bucket, the trap grips behind the head everytime.
Been trapping on my small property since 2015. Targeting woodchucks, possums and skunk. On March 22nd I caught my first raccoon. With a 160 in a bucket set. I was shocked! This thing weighed at least 20 pounds! I have never seen a raccoon before on my property in all my 64 years.
When I was younger I never needed anything but my hands to set the springs, now that I am older I need a little help. Always take safety seriously. I once let my guard down and had to free myself from a 220. Not a pleasant feeling or an easy release.
Do you guys bark tan with the hair on? I have a couple raccoon hides I want to make into quivers but the hides pretty thin so I wasn't going to brain tan them
