The Desmond Fitzgeralds were beaten by the Butlers of Ormonde at Affane in 1565 and by the Fitzmaurices at Lixnaw in 1568.
Fascinating! I'm very interested in the O'Neill clan as my family "spoken history" has a direct relationship to the O'Neill's - in fact to Lady O'Neill after they accepted English rule. Skeletons in the closet my father called it as he related the story to me some years back. We left County Antrim in the mid 1950 for the antipodes; you can take the boy out of Ireland but Ireland remains in the Man.

I've noticed, that much like the senior Butler & Fitzgerald lines, many of the O'Neills & O'Briens converted to the Church of Ireland, presumably to hang on to their wealth, titles, & land.

FitzGerald and FitzMaurice, are descended from Maurice FitzGerald a Norman chap, companion of Strongbow, there is still a guy living today called Maurice FitzGerald thinks he is the Duke of Leinster, a place that is a republic, Butuiller the same. By Henry VIII's time everything had to be anglicised, he ran a surrender and regrant policy, the first Baron of upper Ossory, Barnaby Fitzpatrick, was born Brían Mac Giolla Phádraig that mans family goes quite far back, the second Baron of Osraige Barnaby Fitzpatrick, was taken away as a child and educated at the court of Henry VIII grew up with Edward VI. There wasn't much choice in a lot of matters.
@@TheJpf79 You should check out the genealogical research on Barnaby's lineage -while it was previously assumed that the family wasn't "Norman" in origin, Y-DNA analysis has disrupted this narrative -the earliest Irish ancestor for this line dates no earlier than the 13th Century and then points to an English or Frankish origin. Claims of descent from the "Mac Giolla Padraig" clan are most likely bogus.

My Great Grandfather, patrick Lehee was from County Cork and came through Ellis Island a long time ago, first settling in Philadelphia then Ashland, Kentucky.
I'll ask Desmond O'Leary if he knows the Lehee. Am from Mallow, what part of Cork was he from?

P.S. Chris de Burgh was born Christopher John Davison,he took the 'De Burgh' surname from his mother's family,as through her,he became the eventual heir of one of most senior landed branches of the family.
One of the English (Norman) barons at Runnymede, who pressured King John into signing the Magna Carta was named Baron de Burgh. Interestingly (to me at least), John's son, Henry III, had to later sign a revised Magna Carta that gave the nobility more rights. Other than that, about all I know about the Magna Carta is where it was signed - at the bottom. ;{D
Read a magazine years ago entitled "Ireland's Own" gave an estimated figure of the millions of people whose surname is Burke (Bourke etc) around the world. Burgh, a fortified place. Burgh Castle in Norfolk. Part of the same Norman family. My maiden N. is Burke. Ancestors probably tenant farmers or workers at best on the land. Just because our surname is King. Lord, Abbot or Duke means probably they worked the land of the landowner. Lord is Anglo-Saxon, a corruption of Hlafward, keeper of the loaves; ie Head of Household responsible for family and his retainers. Lady is similarly derived from Hlafgivu, giver of the loaves. Mistress of the Household.

Can you talk about the Ó Fáolain family I've done a little bit of research but can't find much, I know they where Kings at some point, and then the family split into different factions.
Supposedly, the Whalen family from my native Mason County, KY (my high school principal was Elza Whalen Jr.) are descended from the O'Faolains.

My gran was a Burke from Tuam apparently is was a fairly common name to the area her family where part of the ballyglunin burkes not sure is that a descendent of any of the burke ancestors or not, her mother was a Hogan that is not a common name to county Galway apparently though.

There are De Burgh's buried in Newcastle Church in Pen y bont ( Bridgend) South Wales, along with the De Breos Family, De Breos by the way is the Bruce family who were not Normans they come from the Brythonic Family Brewys and were earlier Kings of Caereddynt and Rheged before leaving their home after the Scot and Saxon Viking invasion of what is now Scotland, they arrived back in Britain from Brittany with the Normans in 1066 in Brittany their name was Breoc, it is also a fact that Robert the Bruce was of the same Family as the Tydyr ( Tudor) and the yst Arth ( Stuart) later Kings of England the Tudors and Stuarts, these were Cymric Families, who were Anglicised, Fitzgeralds by the way are Norman and the Fitz are Burgundians.
Much of my Family History has been involved with Celtic History of both Ireland and Britain, my father was a big War Time friend and of Blair " Paddy "Mayne, having served with him in North Africa before being sent to the Balkans as an SOE operative till 1944, he met up again with him for a while after the War. Great man.
Personally, it is difficult to work the real truth about History of Britain and Ireland, because English Norman and later Tudor History in Ireland as in Britain was written by them in their " Own Words and ways" being a fluent speaker of Cymric in modern and its ancient form, which has had no influence by other languages apart from certain Latin words after the Romans, I can say that the History of Ireland is cruel, but it was also the same in what is now Wales, we had Wars with Saxons that kept them out of the West of Britain, for Four Hundred Years , later the Normans came with Bretons, the English always say they landed at Hastings, but they also landed a Breton Army at Penfro ( Pembroke) with the De Breos, De Clare , De Bohun and other Breton Knights to build a Army of Cymric forces that they did and they came from the West to secure the lands of Mercia and Dorset . This was a false hope for the Kings of the British, they got rid of one problem and secured a much worse problem in many ways.
For William the Conqueror was also of Breton heritage being a Plant a Genet ( Children of the Gent) they forgot their Celtic Heritage , with them being much more violent in their ways and suppressed all the peoples of Britain and the same they would do in Ireland with all its later Terrible consequences, the English Establishment are now in retreat in Britain, the useless Tories are hopefully going to be Decimated. I am hoping to live long enough that the Cymru like our Scottish friends will have independence again from this Establishment of Monarchy, I am no Monarchist, be rid of them, I say, also Ireland must be re united it is Ireland and you like us have a long and proud Celtic History,.

His granddaughter Mathilda's 2nd husband, Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, started the Plantagenet dynasty, followed by Geoffrey & Mathilda's son, King Henry II of England. The Plantagenet dynasty is also referred to as the Angevin dynasty (from Anjou). Richard III was the last Plantagenet to sit on the throne. King Henry VII started the Tudor dynasty, he being descended from the Lancastrian Plantagenets through a bastard line.

My male Irish emigrant ancestors were Peter Butler, Michael Lacey, ? Redmond, John Isaac Nicholl (Nickell), Daniel Perry, Joseph Perry, ? Charlton, ? Storey, & James McKay McKissick. So mostly Hiberno-Norman, Anglo-Irish, & Galloglass.

We are MacNamaras, builders of Bunratty Castle. When we visited it a few years ago, we entered the Throne Room and I had my brother take the throne-ceremonially taking it back from the O’Briens. I have photographic evidence! Ceremonial sword in the background! 😂

I was disappointed by the sight of "O'Brien" in old English font, and two tone lions on the shield. Gold lions a red shield were our symbol long before Richard the Lion hearted. In 1543 Murrough O'Brien, King of Thomond submitted to Henry VIII at Greenwich and returned to Ireland as Earl of Thomond. His grant of Arms required gold and silver lions.
One rich family you should have included were the Butlers, Earls of Ormond.
I think Butler should outrank Burke, all things considered.
It was a very hard one and if it went outside of the medieval era, 100%. Like look at Killkenny castle. But before there fall the Burke's where doing super well going in to the 1300s. That's my view. Love hearing what others think.

Incorrect. The Burke family has over 72 confirmed FTDNA BigY 700 confirmed matching DNA Kits, the singer de Burgh is not from the same family. Any male Burke of any spelling that tests can confirm their place on our ( Block Tree) DNA Family Tree and locate their branch.
His real surname is Davison.

Our ambassador to Queen Elizabeth 1st's Court supposedly used to beguile her with tales of it to keep her grasping claws off our lands. I don't think it was a long term successful strategy. The last owners I know are an Anglo-Irish family. One of the prominent members was notorious for his cold blooded murder of the vegetarian political crank, Francis Sheey-Skeffington, during the 1916 Easter Rising. Clan MacCarthy certainly has no current business interest or control over it. Put it down as unfinished business that will eventually be dealt with. Like most marketing guys you should really try surgical extraction of your cranium from its current dark posterior location.

Fact-check. Bunratty Castle was built by the MacNamara clan, not the "MacMurroughs" which is not a Munster clan. The castle was later to come under the ownership of the O'Brien clan. Facts are important.
