Scottish men were raised with a warrior mindset, crucial for facing their natural adversary, England. Despite typically engaging in internecine conflicts, the clans united in a fierce war of independence from 1296 onwards. This resistance was sparked when Edward I (the 'Hammer of the Scots,) claimed the Scottish throne for his puppet, only to be cleverly defeated by the rebellious upstart William Wallace, who met a gruesome end after ultimate defeat.

The Sewell/Sowells of the Appalachians migrated there from the Carolinas, before that from Virginia. Came across the pond from England but hailed from the Scottish Highlands. An ancestor (Texas Ranger, Andrew Jackson "AJ" Sowell) wrote about the family in the late 1800s from Gonzalez Texas. His books 📚 may be found on Amazon. Good reading about how clannish the Scottish & Irish were. They lived in groups for protection & provision. No big government welfare state back in the time between 1619 & the 1880s. We've come a long way from the founding of Jamestown Virginia in 1604. And not all of what passes for progress has been good for God, country or the family.

The Picts of the Roman Era were more fearsome than the Norse Vikings that invaded Scotland several hundred years later. They live on! The Picts!
That niether the Earl of Moray nor the Black Douglas were never mentioned in this was a shame , that we Scots were and are fearsome in battle and first class warriors is something we're born with . We carry the warrior gene , born of the nature of our land and history no matter where in the world we ended up ! 😊

We all know the main reasons for Scottish military success; faster moving infantry (starting in feudal age), faster firing siege, and 40% more hit points on the siege.
The faster wood choppers definitely help set up a robust eco to support your army. And do not forget: "An army marches on its stomach..." so luckily your enemy shouldn't be able to steal any of your starting sheep

Proud of my Scottish/Pict/Viking Blood, My family came from Scotland, in the far North just before the Civil War and immediately signed up with 4 members, my Great Great Grandfather, and 3 of my Uncles of the same period, Lost my Grandfather at Shiloh, my uncles both Captains, one fought with a bullet in his neck through Shiloh and at Corinth was shot in the leg, Had to have it sawed off in two places at separate times to stop the gangrene and replaced with a wooden Peg from the knee down, then went on to fight through to the end of the war. Another Uncle called the poet of the Civil war in a book about them gave me a clear picture of how tough they were, even in their photos in uniforms they looked like they would fit even wounded. This was a good rendition of the history of Scotland and I fly the flag proudly in my house and yard. And yes I play the bag pipes and tossed the Caber in the Highland Games.

I saw Fraser and I thought of undertaker in Dad's Army. It was said in 16th-17th centuries the English kept a portrait of William Wallace in their privies. I read that in a 18th century Chapbook.

looking through history, aside from harassing raids, the winner of major battles is almost always the defender that picks the battlefield and lets the opponent launch the attack.

My brother told me our Scottish ancestors clan motto was " defenders of the land" i was like cool! How did we end up here(America)? He shrugged his shoulder and said they fled Scotland.😮😂
My family too came to the US back in the day. There were Covenanters. My ancestors hailed from S.W. Scotland. The Clan motto is "Sweeter after the difficulties."
Well I can not say how all of them got to America, but in the 1600's the king of England forced 6 of clan muirhead onto the boat. And our motto is " By the help of God" .

By the time of Edward the 1st he makes it law for almost all Englishmen to train with the longbow weekly, so a lot of the longbowmen do become English as well. They inherited and learned this from the welsh but for example when Owain Glyndwr rebelled the English had to use mostly English longbowmen cause they were fighting the Welsh

Another American history of Scotland. The clans were a Highland institution. Hardly any of Scotland's major historical events or battles took place in the Highlands . All of the important events, and battles prior to the Jacobite uprisings, took place in Lowland Scotland and the Borders.
The Clans were not just a Highland institution. They were a Celtic/Gaulic institution that predated the Greek city states and were common throughout Northern Europe prior to the Roman era
The Scottish clans , existed only in Scotland, Nowhere else, Scotland. Hence the name SCOTTISH . And they existed only in the part of that country known as the Highlands. All of Scotland's important historical events, battles, treaties etc. took place in the lowlands and borders. The American commentator in this video waffles on about the "Warrior with his flaming red hair" and other shite. What about the Mackintosh's fighting alongside the Knights Templar against King Olaf for the Orkney Islands (and winning). What about the Highlanders fighting and winning against the many Viking raider incursions? You needed insider protection to even travel through the Highlands. That's what's recorded in my family history.

De Bruce's wish was to have his heart taken to Jerusalem. The black James Douglas was entrusted with this task and on his way to Jerusalem he decided to aid the Spanish against the moors and was killed in battle

The caber toss is not about distance - it is closest to a 12 o'clock throw from the participant. The caber must turn end over in the air, land on its top then fall away from the participant as dead straight as can be achieved. It is a great test of strength and accuracy. The throw done in the video was close to perfect. Note, I said "participant", you may have thought I'd have said "tosser." Nope. I am descended from Fergus Mor MacErc of Dalriada and thus Conn of the Hundred Battles, High King of Ireland.
When it comes to the Battle of Culloden and the Jacobite Rebellions, it is important to note that Presbyterian Scotland was mostly on the side of the Williamite Kings (i.e., the Hanoverians by the time of Culloden) rather than the Jacobite Kings. This comes down to the Bishops Wars and several uprisings (including the destruction of the Lowlands by Oliver Cromwell) in the century prior under a series of agreements called the Covenants (hence the term Covenanters). The predominant group within Scotland that supported the Jacobites were the Catholic Scots, who saw no affiliation at all with constitutional government nor the Scottish Covenants. As such, a huge number of the British soldiers fielded at Culloden were actually Scots, with a second, larger Scottish Williamite army in the north suppressing other elements of the Jacobite rising, which included the Black Watch (itself raised specifically as a Williamite force). Essentially, the Jacobite rebellions within Scotland were a series of divisive civil wars, not a united Scotland versus the Sassenach English. Indeed, more Scots fought against the Jacobites than English, at least in Scotland itself.
If you look closely at the history of the black watch you would know that they were actually seen as traitors by the Scottish people for a very long time and most of the time they were absolutely destitute before they would even consider joining the regiment

@@andrewcarter9284 no, they weren't all Catholic, although that was a large part of their forces, and certainly most of their upper echelon was motivated strongly from that position. But Episcopalians (both CoE and Scottish Episcopalians) also had huge numbers there, for mostly the same reasons they had supported the Royalist cause in the decades earlier. There were small numbers of other denominations, but then you'd find equal or more of Catholic and Episcopalian Scots in the Orange forces too. My point is that people seem to separate the Jacobite rebellions with the preceding wars in Scotland, England, Ireland and the Continent. Yet they were very much entwined. The Bloodless Revolution only occurred because of the Bishop's Wars half a century earlier.

The depth of the Scottish warrior class goes way beyond 1745 to the elite warriors of the Napoleonic wars to modern day SAS. Perhaps this story could be carried forwards through the backbone of the British Empire when 75% of emigrates to the Empire were Scottish. But the Scottish did much, much more than fight. According to a German Professor at Princetown University - they invented the modern world and everything in it!
I think the Scot warrior spirit was definitely broke in the recent vote to remain loyal subjects of the queen.

In his book 'Being a Scot' Sean Connery refers to the Scottish cringe. I believe he is referring to the inferiority complex of some Scots feel before our ancient antagonist. People here tell me that Scotland has been voted the most beautiful country in Europe and I ask - 'Aye, but have you met our neighbours in the South? Having lived my life in the Far East, and now as a self-made man in the Philippines I have never felt the urge to cringe before any of those weak, winging, disunited individuals. The British Empire has long gone, the United Kingdom is crumbling and its time for us Scots to move on to greener pastures and a better world without hanging on to the baggage of our delinquent partner.
barefoot in winter? Even if one was tough enough to handle that kind of discomfort, I don't know how they would have escaped frostbite and loss of their feet. And how all of that kilt and excessive cloth wrapped around them did not hinder their agility during fighting amazes me. I struggle with getting in the truck when i wear long full skirts. can;t imagine hand to hand combat while avoiding getting tangled and tied up in all the cloth. lol I am impressed with that skill for sure. But then I am impressed with a lot of people that lived such a life back then.

I used to play in the snow barefoot. No big deal but I'm a Gunn. My family came from Northern Scotland. The Hudson Bay company would hire people from that area to stand the cold in Canada.
I love the viking biker armor and the display of dirt covered barbaric scotts. By that time in the middle ages the scotts were already a sophisticated people living in sophisticated cities and villages, not hamlets with huts made of dirt and straw. They had many knights of their own and sophisticated warriors. There were times they had even more modern artillery than the english.

There is indeed a very pronounced bias in this production.
Also, the 14th and 15th centuries most men of means in Scotland wore hardened pleated cloth armor with wool compressed so tightly it had to be sewn in with great care. Probably had chainmail underneath. While not plate harness it was flexible giving a speed advantage, and it could probably take a few hits before injuries become to serious.
The lowland lords had been Normanized or came from Norman families integrating into Scotland like the Bruce himself, and both him and William Wallace could arm themselves more or less as well as the English they were nobles. Just like how Vikings and Germans could always arm themselves with the cutting edge of weapons technology for the time despite being called "barbarians" equipment just wasn't as standard for rank and file in less wealthy states. But this video saying that most highlanders just wore a tartan is dumb like you say they had padded gambeson probably back in the 13th century as well.

I am absolutely offended that you went through 1745 with no mention of Lt Col Sir Robert Munro and the formation of the 42nd Highland Regiment and his creation of the "clap to the ground" methodology that inspired British Rank and File warfare and his subsequent death at Falkirk 1746 where he, at age 62, he was abandoned by his English regiment and fought off 6 men with a halberd before a 7th shot him in the groin.
He is the ONLY MAN IN (SCOTTISH) HISTORY to be carried off the battlefield by both sides.

The Scottish people were tactically dispursed throughout the world, but many of Scottish descent have not forgotten their heritage.

Two things first Washington was not the first president of the United States. He was the first Constitutional President. Before him under the Articles of Confederation there was a man named John Hanson who is the forgotten president who served as president under the articles of confederation. Most Americans don't even know who he was. Because the Articles of Confederation and the early history of the nation is practically forgotten today.
Second Clan rivalries made their way to the new world that would become the United States. Including the rivalry between the Macdonalds and Clan Campbell . So that hatred lasted longer than the times mentioned in the video. Also Clan Fraser continued having their own issues with other clans for sometime after the original problem started. But we live in a more civilized time now.
whether they were originally Celts or another distinct ethnic group is uncertain; I have both Scottish and Irish lineage and consider them both Celts; but, I could be mistaken; the warrior cultures of the Vikings and Germanics (who might be Vikings that settled into Europe) clearly influenced the Picts since Vikings were also known to raid other lands in times of food scarcity (and whatever other reasons they chose to do so); from what I can tell, they're all descendants of Noah's son Japheth; I still believe the Vikings came from Phoenician genetic stock, as did the Etruscans; who knows! maybe Picts and Etruscans have some common DNA; that would be an interesting study

Once opposed to English rule, many Highlanders joined the British Army after the Jacobite rebellion in order to earn money to support their families. A large percentage of the 18th and 19th century British Army included men of Scottish heritage.

I have a very large ancestry tree and I can trace a lot of my relatives to Scotland I’m about 60% Scottish and I am related to so many different clan names it’s confusing and also the Norse the franks the welsh oh and 3% Irish I have no German or anything east of England Scotland France I have a lot of relatives from the very far north

The Battle of Culloden was not a battle between the "English Army" and the Scots. In the 18th C Scotland was part of the United Kingdom after the separate Scots and English thrones were disestablished and replaced by the UK throne. The Battle of Culloden was between the BRITISH Army comprised of UK troops (Scots and English) vs the Jacobite Army. There were more loyal Scots Highlanders fighting on the side of the British Crown than were fighting for the Jacobites. The Royal troops were NOT "The English Line". It was comprised of both English and Scottish Troops and clans loyal to the Crown. This documentary should be called "The American History of Scotland". Told by yet another American narrator who can't tell the difference between England and Britain/UK. After 1700 the documentary becomes quite historically inaccurate and probably before 1700 as well.

It may be true that Scots who went to America during the late 1700's may have included many of those who were from Jacobite Clans as a result of the clearances in the Highlands.
But literally millions of Scots, like the Irish, have emigrated not only to America, but to Canada, Australia and New Zealand in the 200+ years since then to escape poverty and unemployment and to seek better opportunities.
Those migrations had nothing to do with Jacobite leanings. The vast majority of Scots wanted nothing to do with the Jacobite cause. It is highly unlikely that most American Scots who will have migrated there over the past 200+ years are from Jacobite leaning backgrounds.
The Jacobite cause was essentially a Catholic cause whose leaders believed that the rightful British King should was a Catholic Stuart King on the British Throne in London with Charles Edward Stuart as King Charles III.
The Jacobite cause was not representative of most Scots. The vast majority of Scots at that time and since then were not very sympathetic to Catholism or Prince Charlies Jacobites.

I hate how excited people get about guerilla warfare. They act like whatever national hero where they're from invented it. The first guerilla warfare probably involved an actual guerilla throwing a stick in a bush near a group of guerillas and using the distraction to steal some fruit.
In the medieval world you wanted pitched battles. Whoever led the armies employed heralds who would get together with their enemy counterparts before the battle and find a good location to watch. Theyd agree on a name, the time and date, the course of action and even agree on the winner. But in battle you might 4000 men on a side and lose less than 40 to death. You wanted prisoners. Knights don't want to ambush supply lines unless its the kings baggage. Ransoming high value knights you captured in battle was the best way to get ahead and for a knight to keep himself and retinue supplied
