How unexpected at first - the Math Sorcerer is a body builder! - but if you think about it - this is in the tradition of the Greek philosophers:

My dad trained with Serge Nubret a few times (he was from Guadeloupe like him), He ran into Lou Ferrigno and Schwarzenegger too, in his life. Then he totally left the bodybuilding world in the end of the 70s beginning of the 80s and becomes obsessed with running marathons (New York City Marathon, Paris Marathon, etc.) And Middle-distance running. He used too run almost everyday 20 km ... at least.
My oldest souvenirs of him pumping iron is like yesterday, I was 3 and a half years old (I'm 51 and a ~half now).

I have done physical training in all of its forms for more than 20 years and I think I have some perspectives that could help.
First of all, any activity is better than no activity. Period.
With that out of the way we can get into the minutia of efficiencies.
Bodybuilding, maybe like you may have discovered already, is much like the scientific method of physical activity.
It takes things in isolation, compares theories on the best methods for annihilating that specific muscle/muscle group and then records that progress.
This is both bodybuilding's biggest strength and it's biggest weakness.
It is a strength because it shows you unequivocally, how to best target a single muscle.
This is important to know, as it can help you address weaknesses and imbalances in your own physique.
It is a weakness because bodybuilding treats the human body as a sum of individual muscular components worked individually instead of treating the body as a whole and a cohesive muscular entity.
Bodybuilding in itself, done exclusively, will form imbalances and disorder in the muscular systems of the body and possibly the nervous system of the body if done to extremes
A much better solution for those who are not specifically competing in bodybuilding is to take whole body activity approaches that teach the body to work as one unit.
I am personally a fan of martial arts, but also a big proponent of body-weight centrist strength development.
Teaching the body to move itself through space more efficiently is the end goal of the body.
The body does not want to be 250Lb of muscle mass, nor does it want to be 250Lb of fat.
It is most at equilibrium when it is lean and capable of handling all natural movements with great efficiency and grace.
For a great visual contrast watch competitive gymnasts and then watch competitive bodybuilders.
Who seems to be in less pain, enjoying life the most and moving effortlessly?
I went down the bodybuilding hole for a good ten years and it brought me nothing but constant pain and misery.
After focusing on martial arts and gymnast style movements, it not only corrected all the damage I had done to myself over the years bodybuilding,
But it expanded my body, spiritual and philosophical awareness.
The body and the mind are very connected.
The more cohesive your body can work with your mind the better both will be.
Trust me when I say, exclusively bodybuilding will not help that cohesiveness.
You need full body aware natural movements to balance the body and mind.
The simplest move to demonstrate this relationship is the back bridge.
Start with the easiest forms, then work your way all the way up to stand to stand bridges.
The difference you will feel in you whole body will be like rediscovering your body again for the first time.
It takes dedication, it takes effort, but so does mathematics.
It is clear you have proven you have a warrior mind set.
This goals should be effortless in comparison.

The reason you can't recover if you try to replicate what these guys did is because you don't inject steroids like they did / do. Also: It gets harder and harder when you get older.
The recovery process is the most important, but it's not possible for a normal human being given the volume and intensity of these bodybuilders. I know this is not rocket science, I just feel that there are some people who actually think it's possible to train like this and look like this on a regular diet.

Great book. It can be a bit volume-heavy for the average person, but it is an absolute must-read for anyone getting into bodybuilding.
If one can still find it, the best bodybuilding book ever written is Extreme Muscle Enhancement by Dr. Carlon Colker.
To those recommending Starting Strength, that is a great book, but it is a strength training/powerlifting book, not bodybuilding. It's good for the learning better mechanics for increasing your strength in the main power movements, but will not translate to hypertrophic results like a bodybuilding program will. That said, it is good to go on a strength specific training cycle from time-to-time. One book won't replace the other, but wisely implemented, they can complement each other well.

3:39 fuel is the way this works for anyone serious about following this program. You have to eat an enormous of protein, carbohydrates and fats in the prescribed proportions. Gallon of water and plenty of rest. It really is made for someone who is doing this nearly or completely full time. At least with my experience. Not sure how Arnold feels about what he said now that he is older and feels the effects of his lifting but he didn’t like wraps or anything to help lift other than the equipment itself. Also this is about body building and mot weightlifting. It is not about the number but the desired effect to the human body and aesthetic from it. A whole human being does involve some level of exercise and it is good for those in a purely academic setting to develop that part of themselves. Honestly it is not different than researching something you are weak and and start practicing to get better. Nice video.

There’s some stuff in other “Arnold-written” books from around the same time (?) that IMO strain credulity, to such an extent that an alternative might IMO be sending away for an offer in the back of a comic book.
