I'm an alcoholic. I was in Kevin Street college when Paul went missing before an International. It was all over the evening papers "Paul McGrath Missing!" ... and he was drinking in our bar, the junction in Kevin Street .. .at ten in the morning ... drinking a pint, minding his own business and being left to it.. Neither of us knew we had a problem, obviously! 11 years sober. I hope Paul is okay. He beat Italy that day, every ball that went into our half .. bang ... straight back out with his head.

But I do worry about Paul, because like I've said to him many times, people in football will look after you... but the moment you finish playing football, they won't look after you anymore. It's in their interests to look after you. When it's not in their interests, they won't." How many gifted footballers learnt that lesson too late? Paul McGrath was such a great player, and he is a lovely man. Wish him all the best in his battle with this disease.

Yeah it was like he had telescopic legs, and his head was like a magent to the ball that day. Last minute an Italian fella would look like he was in. Ball cleared away or tackled by Paul.
I met Paul McGrath in the bar of a Manchester hotel, near the airport. Came across (he was sober) as a nice, humble guy but boy, what a player he was. As for Jack? Man, I wish I could have met him. I just loved to listen to him and I bet he could have regaled you all night with some brilliant stories. RIP Jack.
Cannavaro. Passarella. McGrath. Best three centre halfs I've seen. Seriously. A very very special footballer. Strength. Football smarts. And boy was he quick. Could do it all.
When did he play 4 us he was English he won the world cup with his brother sir Bobby ????? So when he play 4 Ireland he was a manager and our first good manger
Great player and a decent fella, Paddy Crerand and him came to our hotel when we had a trip screwed up by the travel agent. We were supposed to meet the man.utd team before the match, we were then told it had been changed until after the match, when we came to meet them most of the players were away. When paddy heard about it he took us on a trip around old Trafford and got our hotel address and brought Paul McGrath with him to meet us. They stayed for about an hour. One of the greatest players and a great guy
Never a truer word said that they will look after you when you are a player, but when your career is over you are on your own. Fergie was ruthless when it came to football and got rid of Paul from Man Utd along with Norman Whiteside, due to their heavy drinking. However, Paul McGrath spoke fondly of Fergie and understood his position. I remember when he was interviewed he said that he had asked Fergie for help years later and Fergie stepped up and provided it. All Paul said about this was that it was nothing to do with money. Class from both men👍👍
As a Villa fan and being a teen in 90s I was fortunate to see Irish legends week in, week out. Memories of McGrath, Townsend, Houghton, Staunton in a brilliant side. Happy days.
My favourite player ever. My best days of supporting villa. Massive character - floored maybe, but a true hero. He actually released an album of covers not long ago - I’m not suggesting you all rush out and buy it but you could that every lyric he sang was heartfelt. He certainly understands life’s complexity
Jock Stein had the same problem with Jimmy Johnstone regarding alcohol. A flawed genius that tormented opposition players that would hack him down and he just got up and carried on.
Reckon their was a lot more to Charlton's thinking than that. Brady, Stapleton and O'Leary were picking the team under Eoin Hand or at least had way too much influence. Charlton knew this and laid down the law.
Good point by Jack that people won't look after you when finished playing. Paul really had his challenges after but I think he has done ok after all. Legend

Absolutely correct..A rare Diamond of a player who had the ability to raise his game when surrounded by the best.
