  • Their names are Giada Cunningham and Aisling Sage -- and as Team Lord's fiddlers, they are absolute dynamite.
    Let's start with Giada. If you're a casual fan who's only seen the 1996 and 1998 videos, then when you picture Team Lord violinists, you picture the OG duo of Cora Smyth and Máiréad Nesbitt. And, to be fair, they were absolutely electric onstage; both have gone on to have wonderful careers (Máiréad in particular has met with some very high-profile success). But across all six Lord of the Dance videos (1996, 1998, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2020), aside from Michael Flatley himself, who holds the record for the most number of appearances as a featured performer?
    Giada.
    After 1998, every single Lord of the Dance video has featured Giada as the lead violinist. She's that good.
    No, really. Nothing more needs to be said. Giada really is all that and a pint of Guinness.
    What makes this particularly interesting is that Giada isn't even Irish; she's Italian. And this really does speak to the truly international nature of Team Lord; if you look at the leads in the Impossible Tour, it's quite a mix:
    * Matt Smith (Lord of the Dance): English
    * Erin-Kate Mcilravey (Saoirse): Scottish
    * Zoltan Papp (Don Dorcha): Hungarian
    * Andrea Papp-Kren (Morrighan): Hungarian
    * Jess Judge (Little Spirit): English
    * Giada Cunningham (violinist): Italian
    * Aisling Sage (violinist): Irish
    * Sarah Louise Dooley (vocalist): Irish
    (And the guy who created the show? Who invented the entire genre of commercial Irish dancing? American.)
    This is a good thing. This is the 25th anniversary year of Lord of the Dance, Ireland's billion-dollar dance show, and it is a testament to the show's success as a global export that it has such a diverse international cast, all celebrating Irish culture through music and dance.
    And speaking of Ireland, that brings us to Aisling Sage. Aisling's a firecracker. She joined Team Lord in Q1 2020, touring Mexico, Austria and Germany before the pandemic brought everything to a halt. During the downtime, Aisling continued as a Dancelord TV livestream broadcaster, livestreaming Irish music and demonstrating violin technique to the fans (plus she had a couple of viral lockdown performance videos of her own). When combined onstage with Giada, you get this amazing dynamic duo: echoes of the OG magic from 1996, but new and exciting in its own right. Here we see her reunited with Giada onstage for the Impossible Tour, as they both shred onstage to a 15,000-seat stadium.
