The trumpets are very important to this repertoire. Loud instruments are able to brighten the wedding atmosphere.
Gloriously stirring! I only learned for the first time the other day that the famous, instantly-recognizable "wedding tune" is actually a segment from Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". I never knew that, so really nice to hear it in its entirety for the first time.

Why is the guy playing the timpani setting them up backwards?
It's not really backwards: A bit unusual, here the timpani are placed in front of the brass and halfway to the right. His 4 timpani are placed in a semi-circle so he can reach them all easily. And the center of the semi-circle (between 2nd and 3rd timpani) is directed towards the conductor. That puts the 4th timpani almost behind the player, but that is just due to his placement and orientation.
