- Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy:
Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream Op.21
Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra
Valery Gergiev, Conductor
10th Anniversary Concert
Live at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden - Hudba
Mendelssohn composed a piece so hard it became an audition excerpt for flutes, clarinets and violins.
And cellists. I hate this so much 😂
I would be darned if Mendelssohn composed this Scherzo and thought, "Hmm, this will definitely screw up orchestra auditionees."
and cellists. it sucks.
Help I’m dying rn
Csyo violin audition ::
Dammit this audition excerpt
Princeton?
Same I have to play it for an audition later this summer and... Let's just say I'm kinda worried about it😬
same lol
I have to play the flute bit at the end and oh my gosh
SAMEEEEEEEEEEEEE
For those facing the hell of Orchestra auditions the flute solo begins around 4:00
1:25 Letter E, 1:57 Letter G, 2:11 Letter H, 2:49 1 before K, 3:17 Letter M, 3:33 Letter N

A marvelous symphonic piece of "Scherzo" from Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Op.21. Even fairies would love dancing & listening to this beautiful music.
NOT EVEN ONE SINGLE SHOT TO THE VIOLAS
it's for the better.
These musicians are killing machines >
*Music of absolute beauty*. This Scherzo along with Mozart's overture of Figaro _K.492_ got me in trouble many times with my neighbors because my extremely loud speakers ;>o.
+brahim119 You must crank up your speakers really loud!:D Everyone is playing so quiet! The bow stroke is such a pain in the arse! But the entire scherzo is pure beauty!
MENDELSSHON....OH VERY GREAT GENIUS
This piece was used in the 1946 movie "The Yearling" during the scene when the boy is running through the woods with the fawn and other deer. It was perfect!
Also, it's used to open the 2002 movie Red Dragon. It's being played in concert. One of the flute players flubs his part and Hannibal Lector, in the audience, takes offence. He kills the less-than-perfect musician and serves his body parts to the symphony board at a dinner party.
One of the finest conductors and orchestras that the musical world has ever produced. Meastro Gergiev, you are a genius, and your performers are among the best artists in the world. Thank you all, for one of the most outstanding performances of all time.
Squeaks happen... As a clarinetist, I know this all too well. To anyone who doesn't play a reed instrument: To trust a random piece of cane to do everything you want it to is hysterically idiotic... XD we're idiots... Lol
Add double tonguing at piano dynamics with notes flying through different registers and you've got a recipe for disaster which still sounds beautiful
Nimesh Singh 😹😹
No we are not crazy, being a reed player is purgatory. At least we don't have two reeds lashed together. Hate to think what those oboe and bassoon players did to earn that.
The time is perfect.Great performer!!!!!!!
A perfect "non studio clean" performance. Love thw spirit they convey
One of the finest conducter and orchestras in existance.
Putin supporter !
Who else is doing this as an audition excerpt :_(
iwi
Flutist nightmare...

LOOL
This music is played out at the beginning scene of the movie Red Dragon!!
oml let the clarinetist live
Mario sky Theatre orchestra is just one of my favorite orchestras of all time....Gergiev has done sucha phenomenol job on this piece
I am genuinely mad at Felix Mendelssohn for having such a difficult name to spell first of all. But I'm furious at him for composing this.
Isaac W ?
@@lucyfoster4082 sarcasm. His name is difficult to spell but this piece is nearly impossible to play as a clarinetist.
Isaac W Ah!
Чего??? Как это запомнить на слушанье музыки???
another great composer who died way too young.
Hannibal approves this 💖
Except the squeak
Great conducting! Superb musicality!
3:33 is where my excerpt beginsss
Noice user and pfp
@@mmk4276 thank yeh :))
Thank you! Cello excerpt begins here
Have to play this for a youth orchestra auditions...scary
even though red dragon brought me here its still a beautiful piece of music
Lol just at the beginning, the conductor just closes his eyes, he looks so at peace just because the music is lovely!
Red dragon brought me here. And I even here a false note at 1:17
I love this- Midsummer Night's Dream is my favorite total work- This piece can't be played any better than this. The Intermezzo is actually my favorite part, but it has to be played restlessly, like the first Midsummer Night's late night puff of Autunm. Mad dogs like me have been there.
youtube is great- I've played this for years, but really fun to watch now too.
what is this music about?
Damnit I’m in 9th and play flute and I have to do this as audition excerpt to get in local symphony and with only 4 days to practice, it’s a pain in the ass
Bravo Flutist!
Yes, these folk are really good....the hard hours!!
Best version I have heard so far, in my opinion ;)
Half of comments: Exceptional Performance!
The other half: THE SQUEAK!!!
I can see Hannibal in the audience winking 😉
How the heck did the flautist even do that solo..
+SANTALICKSPEOPLE practice practice practice x9001
around the power level of goku
SANTALICKSPEOPLE fr tho hahaha lol😹😹☠️
According to my mother's cousin, a cancert flute player, the flutes trade off, seamlessly. It's amazing, isn't it.
He was terrified of being killed by Doctor Lecter if he messed it up!
The comfort of this performance is an order of magnitude
The clarinet section should instigate a witch-hunt regarding 1:18...
As well as :29
I was pretty shocked when I heard it, thinking this is a professional Orchestra how :O But as a clarinet player, trust me reeds suck. And the probability for squeaks become so much bigger in exposed passages/solos somehow.
Nimesh Singh what the fuck are you talking about?it is one of the best orchestras in the world.Clarinet reeds just so unpredictable
I read this comment just as it happened.
The internet never forgets.
@SYNERGISTIC123 an eponymous of Benjamin Raspail
MARAVILLOSOOOOOOO
İt's like a Woodwind Heaven.
Amazing
I love 0:54 to 1:00 so genius ♥️
3:55 flute solo
Of course it was. Been a while since i saw it. brilliant movies, gonna have to watch again.
Gotta love that flute solo at the end. Excellent use of the low register, that's something not many composers have done for the flute.
In "2001, A Space Odyssey", Kubrick wanted this piece to be played in the sequence of the floating spaceships. He would finally choose Strauss's Blue Danube : )
Of course, you can only get away with a flute solo in that register if the rest of the orchestra is playing pianissimo.
Or if Hannibal Lecter isn't a member of your audience...
lovely precision playing :-)
It wasn't the flutist, he was playing something else. I heard it though, the random squeak. Something happens again later around 3:15. But hey, they're human... doesn't take away that the ensemble was well together & a good flute solo!
It gives me some great Halloween vibes🎃
Hannibal was in the audience
i aspire to play under this conductor next year and there are excerpts from piece on my audition o_O
Great performance... but at 1:18 somebody pull a "Hannibal" moment.
bravo bravo
Fantastic, apart from the clarinet squeak everyone has pointed out. And the conductor's case of acute Goldfish-mouth. But it's still great!
Im a clarinet doing this for an audition this year. Pray for me
Very nice play
It's like that flautist at the very end was turning to the woman next to her and saying, "Can you believe we just played that sh*t?"
Ahora el scherzo , tercer movimiento y cuadro.
Gergiev is stoned
Vishaan P FR!!😹😹☠️
lmaoo
He even holds a imagined Joint in his hand
1:11 wtf violins
Difficult to imagine fairies in this performance. More like a herd of baby elephants frolicking in the Serengeti.
You need to watch the 1935 movie, if you have difficulty. Nijinsky's sister did the choreography....you'll be amazed.
.
1:18 Clarinet grenade goes off!
M. 296- 323 is “fun” for cellists... thumb position + crazy tempo
This time nobody has to be eaten :)
Opening to measure 54, also known as one of the violin audition excerpts to the majority of youth orchestras.
To be more precise, Measure 17 to 54 :) since the first 16 measures are occupied by winds!
Faares Deeb Good luck!!
Henryk Szeryng Me too. That’s why I watched it. Good luck man!
Hans Rüppen hast du es geschafft?
I’m playing the beginning, but I’m a violin. How?
во время соло флейты показывать Валеру это конечно гениальный ход оператора
Not me listening to this because I have a cello audition with this excerpt in it 😢
nice
the conductor has happy fingers
riiiight...
Does anyone have any tips on playing this piece? I have the second violin part
Just be thankful not to have the clarinet part and you'll be fine (I'm a clarinetist)

It's a reeded instruments that squeaks @1:18 not the flute.
@feebaslover11 That wasn't an oboe. That was a clarinet :)
It's the cyclical nature of it- a whirlwind dervish.

How old was Felix when he wrote this?
it was the clari at 1,17
1:18 You’re FIRED!
Bro.... I got an audition on this today what am I doing? I should be practicing
Princeton?
Gergiev is very full of himself, not to say a bit arrogant but he is a great artist also. I saw him several times in action.
Is it just me or he looks a lot like Roman Abramovich? Are they related? Just asking.
Clarinet squeak, yes, not a flute or oboe.
Where is Hannibal when you need him?
jstuttgart That's right. This piece was heard on "Red Dragon." At the beginning,
I believe.
