  • Learn how to replace or repair a broken or outdated bathtub and shower handle. In this video I'm removing the old low-end Moen plastic handle and replacing it with a universal chrome handle, both fixing the handle and giving it a nice upgrade in the looks department.
    While I didn't see this exact handle online, here's a similar one but with a better build quality:

    If water isn't coming out of the shower then you don't need to turn the main water off. Even if it is, you can use pliers to turn the valve off as soon as the handle is removed.

I can't seem to screw them back in and one is protruding from the plate at an angle. I don't want to break anything, or strip the screw. What could be causing that problem and how do I get those screws out so that I can replace them and then get to replacing/upgrading my broken faucet?

    • @OurLittleHill
      @OurLittleHill Před 10 lety

      Nils Rasmusson The tube that's covering the pipe sticking out of the wall. When you look at the finished knob it would be the part that looks like a grooved tube sticking between the knob and the faceplate. I'm thinking the only way to get it to look right is to paint it. We went from builder chrome to oil rubbed bronze and it just looks silly.

    Hi, have been living in an older apartment building for over 10 years. My unit has 6" shower arm with 1/2" connection with IPS thread and shower head with 1/2" connection with IPS connection. All new shower arm and heads I found has NPT connections. IPS connection and NPT connection do not match. But can I take out my current IPS connection shower arm and install NPT connection shower arm? Like I was thinking of getting rid of both the old 1/2" IPS thread shower arm and shower head first. And then install a new 1/2" NPT threading shower arm with teflon tape to prevent water leaks and NPT shower heads in their place. Is that possible if the wall holes accommodate? Is it even recommended to replace IPS shower arm with NPT connection in an older apartment unit? Can anyone please help with answers? Thank you

      It only turned - no push.

      In that case, you should see if you can replace the cartridge. If I'm not mistaken, the cartridge is the set of pieces that control the actual water flow from hot and cold. I've replaced cartridges on sink faucets before and I think this works the same way. See if you can identify the brand of the cartridge, snap a photo and then take it to the hardware store to show them what you're up against. Hopefully it's just that and not a whole new valve system. Best of luck!

    In an apartment, I don't have access to the water shut off valve. Do I absolutely have to shut the water off to replace the handle?

    • @LRN2DIY
      @LRN2DIY  Před 3 lety

      You don't. You should be able to do this with the main water on if you're careful since technically you shouldn't ever need to turn the handle to the "on" position.

      Winston Churchill so, how would you turn off water for shower? Where's that valve?

    • @VinnyBarbarino
      @VinnyBarbarino Před 5 lety

      @@Noahsoak in the wall behind the shower. Typically in whatever room/hallway in your house is directly on the other side of the shower faucet, there will be an access panel you call pull off to reach the water valves

      Vince my dream is a house with a hallway! Lol. Nope, outside of house is on other side of bathroom. I'm on a well so I assume I have to drain and turn off pump at electrical panel? Have fiberglass tub/shower combo.
