  • In our continuing series "On the Road," Steve Hartman meets Jon McAlpin, who works as a front-door greeter at an Omaha cancer center. McAlpin felt hopeless after his own cancer diagnosis but came to realize the end of his life doesn't have to be the end of the world.

    This man is wonderful. My late husband was on dialysis and continued his community service for the same reason. You have to have something to do because if the only reason for living was to be in a chair with needles in your arms, you aren't living.

    I am guessing that some of the people going through those doors live alone. When one lives alone, they don't get human touch. I bet everyone benefits from a hug from time to time.

    I try not to. "Miss a Dsy. I have a rare disease called Erdheim-Chester disease. It's been reclassified as a rare cancer, blood cancer.. I'm this case, the infection fighting cells are the bad guys.(erdheimchester.org). I made a promise to myself and GOD that this disease can't have me. And, I show.my.bride a bunch of LOVE. Cause, I do love her.
