  • Some say you should save the best for last but my goodness were we spoiled with ALL THE ANIMALS for our safari experience at Elephant Plains in the famed Sabi Sands Game Reserve just outside of Kruger National Park in South Africa. Big 5? No problem.
    I still can't believe how lucky we were out there for our 3 nights there. Our guide and tracker for the whole trip was Morné and Dion who were phenomenal. The food was absolutely delicious and our honeymoon suite (Manyeleti) was stunning.
    In this vlog watch how our 4 days unfolded from the drive up to Elephant Plains to the entire lodge experience. See all the animals that we saw up close including:
    - Lion (wait until 2:32 where we literally parked meters away from a male lion and listened to him roar into the night)
    - Elephant
    - Leopard
    - White Rhino
    - Buffalo
    - Kudu
    - Impala
    - Giraffe
    - Hyena
    - Hippo
    - Wild Dog

    I know this was a few years ago for you but my wife and I just got back from Elephant Plains Game Lodge and it is so fun to relive the experience through your video. The food was still amazing as were the animal sitings! We had never traveled like this over Christmas before and it was a magic experience. Like you, highly recommend EPGL! Cheers!

      Amazing!! I’m so glad you guys had a great time there. Has it changed much since we were there? Are many of the crew still there? We always say that this is one of the best trips we’ve ever done!

      @@GoingAwesomePlaces Based on what I could see in your video, much is the same. I could not tell for sure (quick passes with camera) but was your tracker Chris? I suspect that many of the staff are the same and the facilities look very much the same. New/different wildlife. Might be some new Rangers. We saw lots of leopards and other amazing animals but I think the quality of the experience was very much as you remember it!

    Who has gone on a safari? Would love to hear how your experience was compared to ours from a private reserve perspective. Or better yet, is there anyone thinking about doing a safari and have questions about it? Drop a reply or comment below and I will do my best to help you out!

      @going awesome places - did you drive into elephant plains from Johannesburg?

  • @wanderingiPhone

    And now I miss it! Another great video. You had some amazing sightings. My headlight fell in on that road to EP and my guide at EP duct taped it up for me. :)

      Also...headlight fell on the road?? Oh my what car did you have that time?

    • @wanderingiPhone
      @wanderingiPhone Před 6 lety +1

      Going Awesome Places The headlight collapsed in. It didn't actually fall on the road. It's one of the worst roads I've experienced in South Africa so far and I wasn't speeding. I was actually going below the speed limit posted. I rented a mini SUV, can't remember which one but it all felt very plastic-y. And yes, all good memories at EP. I've been there twice so far.

    Hi there, this is amazing and the content is so useful for my upcoming trip. I was wondering, did you drive a sedan/SUV into Elephant Plains? Is a sedan/hatchback good enough for the drive into Elephant Plains?

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, definitely. The roads in were certainly bumpy but it’s definitely do-able for a sedan/hatchback. We drove an SUV but think we would’ve been fine with a sedan. That said I do like that the SUV had more elevated view for animal spotting especially if you’re doing Kruger afterwards. You'll forgive me for not sharing this with my wife, she'd be too jealous. ;-) She was set on spotting a Rhino and of the Big 5, that's the only one we didn't. We had to settle for the Rhinos at the Gas Station and at the Singapore Zoo. Great video! Keep 'em coming.

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 6 lety +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I still can't believe we saw everything that we did. I thought we'd see maybe 1-2 of the Big 5 at Elephant Plains but couldn't believe our luck. The fun of safari is that you never know what you're going to get on each game drive.
      Wait which gas station did you see the rhinos at??

    • @novelist1985
      @novelist1985 Před 6 lety +1

      Going Awesome Places same gas station as featured in your video. Don't know if you saw the men's room there, but the urinals overlooked the animals.

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 6 lety +1

      That's why I asked!! Yes on our way back we went back to the Alzu and saw the animals in the back and yes from the urinal as well LOL. I was sad to read the sign that said that they dehorn the rhinos as a preemptive measure against poachers :(

    Another great video. What lenses did you take for your safari? Cheers from the NWT.

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 6 lety

      Heyy!! How are things in NWT right now?
      Good question about the lenses. I shot the safari primarily with the 40-150mm. Keep in mind this is M43 on my Olympus OMD EM1 MK2 so with the crop factor that's 80-300mm. I also had a 1.4x in some situations where I had time to pop it on to get even more reach but that was still rare. Even STILL...I felt that I couldn't get those shots of just the animal's head but I couldn't justify renting those big bazooka lenses since we were doing things other than safari on this trip. Very happy with the results though. As you can see the OMD EM1 performed REALLY well. I was literally switching between photo and video every time we stopped for a sighting.

    • @skipper4114
      @skipper4114 Před 6 lety +1

      I used to own the Em1 back in 2015 with the 40-150mm f2.8. Loved the lens but to be honest I loved the quality of my Fuji better but that's my opinion only. I had the 12-40 f2.8, 40-150 f2.8, 17mm and the 45mm f1.8.But I still love Olympus. You have the OMD EM1 Mark II correct? Have you seen the new f1.2 lenses from Olympus? damm almost makes me want to switch back again. The North is a warm -22 today its usually -35 by now. Keep up the great work.

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 6 lety

      Actually that's perfect because it's rare to hear someone that has experience with both Olympus M43 and Fuji. When you say you liked it better, is it the color rendition or something else technical like clarity, focus speed etc?
      Yeah I have the Mark 2 which I didn't think would be a big improvement over the 1 but I'm a little biased because I do care about the video now.

    • @skipper4114
      @skipper4114 Před 6 lety +1

      Even as an amateur i found the image quality much better on the fuji and its hard to beat fuji colors. But 16 vs 24 mp does make a difference especially when cropping. But I have seen many reviews saying that the MK 2 is better than the EM1. However I would imagine the video on the olympus is better and having that flip out screen is awesome. If you ever make a trip to see the Northern Lights in the NWT message me or if you make a trip to Japan( wife is from there).......... Merry Christmas and Happy New year.

    but what were the worst parts of this? contemplating doing a honeymoon with a partial safari and worried we might be let down?

    • @GoingAwesomePlaces
      @GoingAwesomePlaces  Před 4 lety

      Kailin Villamar great question! So I’m really digging here but the only thing I can think of is that we didn’t see every single type of animal here? But honestly we came out of this super happy being able to see so many elephants and leopards which is the big draw here. The food, staff, drives, and accommodations were awesome. I guess another would be cost?? But this one is much more affordable than some other private reserves in Sabi Sands. Alternatively you could do Kruger which was our next destination in this vlog.
